Chapter 4

Author: rika
Soren stopped paying attention to the others and slowly shifted his gaze to me.

He raised a hand, let his fingertips trail along my neck, and lifted my chin.

“Pretty little thing. You’ve got some skill, and I like that.”

I met his gaze without flinching and said nothing.

“Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve heard your voice yet. Can’t you speak?”

He brushed his fingers lightly across my lips again.

I slowly raised my right hand and made a gesture toward the outside.

Soren naturally had no idea what it meant and gave me a lecherous grin. “What’s this? Trying to charm me?”

“Relax. I’ll take very good care of you tonight. And if you can’t scream, that saves me the trouble.”

Let him laugh.

In a moment, I would see whether he still could.

What he failed to notice was that the glaring red laser dots around the room were winking out one by one.

Silently.

The perimeter was clear.

I looked directly at him as the corner of my mouth slowly curved upward.

Soren took my expression as a sign that I had finally accepted my fate and was trying to please him, and the smugness on his face became impossible to hide. “Don’t be afraid. This little show is almost over.”

He thought it was over?

How naive.

My part had only just begun.

Soren gave one of his men a look.

The man immediately understood and raised the heavy butt of his gun, preparing to bring it down hard on Ezio’s head.

At the exact moment the weapon came down, I suddenly shifted half a step forward and drove my shoulder hard into the man’s arm.

He grunted, and his swing faltered.

Before he could react, I seized the wrist of his gun hand, twisted it sharply behind him, and drove my knee hard into his abdomen.

He let out a muffled groan and dropped to his knees as the gun fell from his hand and struck the floor with a heavy clatter.

Soren spun around, and his expression immediately darkened.

“You interfering little nuisance!”

He strode toward me and leaned down. “Starting tomorrow, you’ll be crawling at my feet like a pet.”

I stared at him with a smile and tipped my chin toward the windows.

Soren immediately turned to look outside.

At that exact moment, the constant static in his earpiece abruptly disappeared.

“Come in.” He pressed the earpiece, his brows drawing together. “Answer me.”

No one responded.

While his attention was elsewhere, I reached out and clamped a hand around his wrist.

Soren barely had time to let out a muffled grunt before I twisted his arm sharply behind his back and slammed him against the edge of the table.

He instinctively tried to struggle, only to realize in shock that he could not wrench himself free.

His men paled at the sight, and every gun in the room immediately came back up and aimed at me.

Just then, the sound of rapid footsteps came from outside the door and grew steadily closer.

I knew they did not belong to Soren’s men.

The approaching footsteps froze everyone in place. No one dared act recklessly.

I cleared my throat and finally spoke in the low, still-raspy voice my doctor had only cleared me to use the day before.

“Go home and ask your father whether that original document from Geneva three years ago would hold up under scrutiny.”

“Our three-year agreement expires tomorrow.”

“And ask him one more thing for me. Does he still want to live?”

A month later, Soren had been completely cast out of the Greco family, and within days, several of his old enemies found him and broke both of his legs. Before long, he lost his mind entirely and spent his days begging in dark, damp street corners while muttering the same sentence over and over again.“C, I’m going to kill you...”As for the Greco family, Vincent knew exactly how to handle the aftermath. He not only returned every piece of territory and every shipping route they had taken, but also handed over thirty percent of the revenue from their docks as compensation. In the end, I agreed to renew our arrangement for another three years, although this time, I alone decided the rules and the price. The gifts sent by the other seven families as apologies piled up outside the gates of the estate.I refused to meet any of them, so they could only leave their gifts behind and depart nervously. My mother returned from Florence overnight and held me in her arms as she cried over everythi

There was a new restraint in the way they looked at me, as if they were suddenly unsure how to act around me.Vera’s eyes were still red, and she gripped the hem of her coat tightly with both hands before taking a small, uneasy step backward. She probably thought that I had become far stronger than she had ever imagined and no longer needed an older sister standing in front of me to protect me.Seeing how tense everyone was, I simply stretched my arms in front of them and let out a lazy yawn. Then I took Vera by the hand and pulled her down onto the sofa with me.Leaning against her side, I murmured weakly, “Vera, talking is exhausting, and dealing with all this trouble is even worse.”“Now that I’m home, can’t I just leave C behind?”I tilted my head toward them, blinked, and softened my voice in a deliberately pleading tone. “Dad, Gabriel, Luca, Aldo, Ezio, and Vera... you’re not going to throw me out just because I happened to be good at fighting when I was away, are you?”The tensi

“This is impossible... How could this happen? I don’t believe it!”Soren pulled out his phone with trembling hands and frantically began calling the uncles and allies who had always treated him like one of their own.“Uncle, it’s me, Soren! You have to help me and send your men over here.”Before he could even finish, an angry voice exploded through the phone. “Soren, you brainless idiot! If you want to get yourself killed, don’t drag the rest of us down with you!”The call was immediately disconnected.Soren quickly dialed another number. “Riccardo, we agreed that we were going to bring down the Valenti family together! We’ve spent so long setting this up, so we can’t just give up now!”The answer he received was just as cold. “Soren, for the sake of what we once had, I’ll give you one piece of advice: you’re on your own now.”He kept dialing numbers like a madman, calling a third person and then a fourth, but each call either went unanswered or ended with someone cursing him out.In

On the other end of the video call, Vincent’s face had turned livid with rage as he shouted, “Get the jet ready right now! I’m going over there myself, and I’ll skin that idiot alive with my own hands!”If there had not been a screen between them, Soren would probably have already taken a slap across the face.I casually rubbed my ear and said, “Vincent, your son really is noisy.”Still being held down on the floor, Soren stared fixedly at the computer screen on the table. The screen displayed the page for transferring the Valenti family’s assets, with every preliminary step already completed and only the final confirmation left. The moment he pressed that button, all of the Valenti family’s funds would be transferred into the Eight Families’ joint account. It was his last chance to turn the situation around.I saw exactly what he was thinking and said, “Let him go and let him press it.”The men released him, and Soren scrambled toward the computer.I walked over and stopped beside him

The moment Vincent gave the order, every man Soren had brought with him threw his weapon to the floor. One after another, they dropped to their knees.Soren was forced down by the men restraining him, and both knees struck the floor hard.He seemed so shaken by what his father had just said that, for a moment, he even forgot to struggle.Gabriel helped my father back to his feet, but disbelief was still written all over his face, and he could barely get the words out when he looked at me.“You... you really are C? The C whose codename alone is enough to scare people?”“How could you...”That was it. There was no hiding it anymore.Feeling slightly guilty, I forced an awkward smile and said, “Ahem, it’s really not as impressive as it sounds.”“I just happen to like tinkering with guns and know a few people, so you really don’t have to react like this.”“Where did you learn to do all that? That was incredible,” Luca asked as he moved closer, unable to contain his curiosity.“Maybe... I w

Soren still refused to believe it, and with his face flushed red, he shouted at the top of his lungs, “It’s fake! That voice has to be synthesized! You think you can scare me with a fake recording of my father?”I ignored him and spoke into the phone. “Vincent, I called because I wanted to let you know in advance that I’m not dead, but I don’t intend to renew our agreement.”The man on the other end immediately panicked. “No, you can’t do that, C! Did we do something wrong? Just tell me what you want, and I’ll give you anything!”“I’m at the Valenti estate right now,” I said. “Massimo Valenti is my father.”The other end of the line suddenly went silent.“As for why I don’t want to renew it,” I continued with a cold laugh, “call your son on video and see for yourself what he’s doing.”It took Vincent a long moment before he finally stammered, “I-I didn’t know. I swear I had no idea the Valentis were your family! If I had known, how could I possibly have let this happen?”“I was a fool,
