I walked away without picking up the chestnut cake.

Last year, an allergic reaction had sent my wolf out of control. The healer had warned me never to touch anything made with chestnuts again.

When I landed in the hospital after eating too much chestnut cake, Victor, Marian, Lisa, and Noah sat by my bed and teased me for being so greedy I'd risk my life for cake.

It had only been a year, and they'd all forgotten.

My phone buzzed. Victor had texted me a link to the show's livestream.

"Marian feels guilty that you couldn't come in. She found a livestream so you can watch with us.

"Marian doesn't want you to be left out next time we talk about it."

I opened it, and the camera panned across the audience.

The five of them sat huddled together, laughing so hard they leaned on one another. They looked like lifelong friends.

I suddenly remembered that they'd only started watching stand-up because of me.

I was born weak and didn't awaken my wolf until I was 19, a year later than most werewolves.

At school, the other kids in the pack always left me out.

Then I stumbled across a stand-up video.

Those jokes helped me forget the humiliation of being left out, if only for a while.

After that, I couldn't get enough of stand-up.

When Victor and Marian found out, they started watching with me.

Later, Noah and Lisa joined in too.

Back then, they'd sworn they would always watch stand-up with me.

And now, for a girl they'd only met once, they'd been the ones to shut me out.

Last month, we'd planned to watch the moon from the south slope.

I'd gotten all the camping gear ready.

But the night before we left, Marian saw a video about Blackwind Valley and insisted we go there to see the sparks.

The four of them changed the plan overnight and dragged me along. They said all five of us had to go.

Blackwind Valley was full of dark energy, and we stayed there all night.

When we got back, my wolf went out of control, and I was in the hospital for seven days.

And they blamed me for ruining everyone's fun.

But they were the ones who'd dragged me there.

Then there was my 20th birthday last year. Victor and I had planned to hold our marking ceremony.

But the day before, Marian came to me with tears in her eyes. She said she still hadn't found her fated mate and couldn't bear to watch Victor and me become mates. She asked me to wait a little longer.

I refused. I went to Victor, took his hand, and spent a long time begging him to go ahead with the ceremony. I told him I didn't want to wait any longer to become his mate.

He patted my head and agreed with a smile.

On the day of the ceremony, the elder was about to recite the prayer.

Suddenly, the screen in the great hall started playing a video of me begging Victor.

Then Victor called off the marking ceremony.

I became the laughingstock of the whole pack, and the backlash left me even weaker.

Only later did I find out that Victor, Noah, and Lisa had planned the video together.

All because none of them wanted Marian to be upset.

A burst of cheering from my phone pulled me out of my thoughts.

On the livestream, the host invited audience members onstage and picked Marian.

She held the microphone and smiled shyly at the camera. "Actually, someone from our group is missing today. My sister couldn't make it. I hope she's not mad at me. Next time we'll definitely come with her."

The audience laughed warmly.

After she came offstage, the five of them crowded in front of the camera again, all talking at once.

"Della, you'd better watch closely!"

"When we get back, we'll talk all about it!"

"So many of the jokes are hilarious. You're going to love them!"

They sounded warm, as if they really cared about me.

I gave a bitter laugh and closed the livestream.

I texted Kyle.

He was the Alpha of the neighboring Silver Moon pack.

He'd fallen for me at first sight and had always wanted me to be his mate.

But back then, my heart belonged to Victor, and I kept turning Kyle down.

Still, he never gave up. He said he'd wait until I came around.

"Alpha Kyle, I'm ready to be your mate and become your Luna."

He replied in seconds.

"I'm coming to get you right away. Wait for me."

His reply made me feel lighter, as though a weight I'd carried for years had finally lifted.

Someone had already taken my place.

So I'd be the one to leave our group of five.

My mother told me that from that day on, Victor and the other two cut Marian off completely. They even dug the gifts I'd thrown away out of the dump. Then they announced that Marian was no longer under their protection or part of their group. At first, Marian begged them, saying she knew she'd been wrong and would never compete with me again. But Victor never replied.Noah sent back everything she gave him untouched.Lisa didn't even open the letters she wrote. When none of them responded, Marian started spreading rumors. She claimed I'd deliberately shut her out, looked down on Omegas, and used shameful tricks to win Kyle over.A few of the Omegas closest to Marian insisted I'd offended the Moon Goddess. They demanded that the Elder Council call me back to the temple to prove my innocence, or the goddess would punish the whole Shattered Star pack. The gossip spread fast. When Kyle heard, his face darkened, and he got up to leave.I took his hand. "I'll handle it myself."Kyle frowned

Near the gate, Victor ran straight into Marian, who was hurrying over."Victor, did you find Della? Is she still mad at me? Maybe I should go apologize to her..."Victor cut her off. "You planned what happened at the Luna's house yesterday, didn't you?"Marian froze, and tears quickly welled up in her eyes.Without thinking, she glanced toward Noah and Lisa."Victor, I didn't!"I only asked why she hadn't waited for me. Then she got angry, called me lowborn, and said she looked down on..."Noah stepped up from behind Victor, his voice heavy. "Enough."Noah had always smiled when he talked to Marian. Even when she messed up, he'd been gentle with her.But this time he was scowling, and he couldn't hide his anger.Marian's crying broke off, and she looked at him, hurt. "Noah, you think it's my fault too?"But have any of you thought that maybe this was all Della's plan?"She's just jealous that I took you away from her, so she wants revenge on me!"Lisa didn't comfort her the way she use

In the end, Victor thought of Margaret.Della had gone to her home to say goodbye before she left. When they got there, Margaret was sitting in the courtyard, tasting the sweets Della had brought her. Before he could speak, Margaret said, "Della's already gone."When she came to say goodbye, she said she was going to the Silver Moon pack to become Kyle's mate."Victor's chest tightened. He forced out the words. "Become his mate? How could she..."Margaret looked up at him. "Why couldn't she?"Victor, when you gave her ticket to someone else, did you ask her?"When you shut her in that trap, did you ask her?"Victor opened his mouth. He wanted to say it had only been a punishment, that Della had upset Marian so much she'd fainted. But under Margaret's stare, he couldn't get the words out.Noah hung his head, Lisa clutched the hem of her shirt, and neither of them said anything.Margaret went on."She was born weak and didn't awaken her wolf until she was 19. Victor didn't think of Della again until the following evening. The night before, they'd rushed to the hospital. The healer said Marian was emotionally overwhelmed and needed rest.So Victor, Noah, and Lisa had stayed by her bed and never left her side.By morning, Marian felt better. She said she'd bought tickets to the extra show and didn't want them to go to waste. So the three of them took her to see the stand-up show.Afterward, they went out to eat. Marian's eyes crinkled with laughter, as if she'd finally gotten over all the hurt.Only when the waiter brought out Della's favorite strawberry milk did Victor abruptly set down his glass."Where's Della?"Noah and Lisa froze at the same time. They'd left Della in a trap deep in the forest the day before and promised to get her once Marian calmed down. Then Marian had cried at the hospital, and they'd been so busy comforting her that they'd forgotten all about it.Victor went pale. The three of them rushed to the forest. But there wa

I turned to Margaret first and gave her a slight bow."Luna, I'm sorry to disturb you. I'm moving to the Silver Moon pack soon, so I came to say goodbye."Without another glance at Victor and the others, I turned and left. When I reached the end of the lane, Victor caught up and grabbed my arm."Della, are you done throwing your fit?"I stopped and looked back at him."Victor, let's break up."He clearly hadn't expected that. He froze for a few seconds, then his face darkened."Just don't regret it later."I ignored him, pulled my arm free, and went straight home. When I opened the door, several people were standing in the living room.Kyle was directing his men as they carried boxes. My mother stood to one side, smiling. When she saw me come in, she waved me over."There you are. The moment Kyle heard you were moving, he brought his men over to help you pack this morning."Kyle turned to look at me."Almost everything's packed. I've left your personal things for you to go through your

My temples throbbed, and my chest grew tighter.Because my wolf was unstable, I couldn't handle this kind of conflict.I wasn't up to arguing with them. I pushed myself up from the sofa."I'm not feeling well. You should all go."Before I could turn away, hands clamped around both my wrists.Noah and Lisa each had hold of an arm, gripping so hard my wrists went red right away."You're not going anywhere until this is settled."Noah frowned. "Apologize to Marian and eat the cake. Then we'll forget this ever happened."Lisa chimed in. "Marian was nice enough to buy you a cake. Don't be so ungrateful."I stared at them, suddenly struck by how absurd it all was."I'm allergic to chestnuts. The healer said I can never touch them for the rest of my life."You forgot. I didn't."All four of them froze. While they stood there stunned, I pulled my hands free, went upstairs, and locked my bedroom door.Early the next morning, I brought a gift to Margaret, the Luna of our Shattered Star pack, to
