Chapter 2

On my way home, my phone filled with social media notifications.

Mutual friends had seen posts from the show and tagged me.

"So jealous! Your friends remembered what you like and even sent you the livestream!"

"What an amazing friendship. Della, you're so lucky!"

But they didn't know I could have been there in person.

I went to my profile and set my account to private.

Then I opened the group chat for the five of us and typed out a message.

"You don't need to include me anymore. I won't be watching stand-up with you again."

As soon as the message went through, I left the group chat.

When I got home, my parents were sitting in the living room chatting.

They heard me and looked up.

"Why are you back so early?"

I went over and sat down.

"Mom, Dad, I've decided to become Kyle's mate."

My father was surprised. "A few days ago, you only had eyes for Victor. What changed?"

I answered quietly. "I don't want to be his mate anymore.

"I don't want anything more to do with Victor, Marian, Noah, or Lisa. Any of them."

My mother froze for a moment, then quickly understood.

She looked relieved.

"Good. You should have done this ages ago! They walked all over you. Sooner or later, they'll regret it.

"Kyle happens to be coming to our pack the day after tomorrow on council business. You can go back with him. That would put my mind at ease."

I nodded and agreed.

I felt none of the sadness I'd expected, and I wasn't sorry to let them go.

My parents got up to arrange the trip, and I went back to my room.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw the Omega housekeeper by the bookshelf. She turned and bowed. "Miss Della, should I pack these books for storage or move them to the side room?"

My eyes landed on my wish book, and I stopped.

Noah and I were born the same year. He was only three days older than me.

Because I was born weak, the other kids often cornered and bullied me.

Once, when I was trapped in a corner and shoved to the ground, I wished someone would drop out of the sky and protect me.

Then Noah really did appear.

He planted himself in front of me and shielded me.

After that, he never left my side and always looked out for me.

The elders said the Moon Goddess had sent him on purpose to make my wish come true.

Noah probably believed it himself.

So he made me a wish book by hand and promised to grant any wish I wrote in it.

On the newest page of the wish book, I'd written that I wanted to spend my 21st birthday watching stand-up with them.

But that wish didn't come true.

I walked over, took the thick wish book from her, and dropped it into an old storage box in the corner.

"You don't need to keep any of it."

By bedtime, I'd cleared out every gift and keepsake the four of them had given me. I left it all in the hallway for someone to deal with.

I'd thought breaking ties with them would keep me awake all night.

But it didn't. I drifted off quickly and slept without a single dream.

In the middle of the night, I heard a few soft sounds beyond the courtyard wall, followed by a wolf's howl.

I put on a jacket, went to the window, and opened the curtains.

Victor, Noah, and Lisa were standing below.

None of them looked happy.

I went downstairs and opened the door.

Victor came in first. "Della, what's that supposed to mean?" he demanded. "Why did you leave the group?"

Noah stood beside him with his arms crossed and asked accusingly, "So you don't want to be friends with us anymore?

"Don't forget, when you were being shut out, we were the ones who stood by you."

Lisa sighed too. "It was one ticket. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?

"Marian was fighting back tears through the entire second half of the show. Even the jokes couldn't cheer her up.

"Della, you really hurt her this time.

"Go apologize to her tomorrow, and we'll all keep watching stand-up together."

As soon as she finished speaking, Marian stepped out from behind them, holding a beautifully wrapped box. It was the chestnut cake from the shop.

She walked up to me, her voice tearful. "Della, why didn't you pick up the cake? Are you still mad at me?

"Next time I'll give you my ticket, okay? Please don't be mad."

Victor's face darkened. He stepped in front of Marian and looked at me with disappointment.

"Della, when did you get so unreasonable?

"It's such a small thing. Do you really have to make everyone miserable?"

My mother told me that from that day on, Victor and the other two cut Marian off completely. They even dug the gifts I'd thrown away out of the dump. Then they announced that Marian was no longer under their protection or part of their group. At first, Marian begged them, saying she knew she'd been wrong and would never compete with me again. But Victor never replied.Noah sent back everything she gave him untouched.Lisa didn't even open the letters she wrote. When none of them responded, Marian started spreading rumors. She claimed I'd deliberately shut her out, looked down on Omegas, and used shameful tricks to win Kyle over.A few of the Omegas closest to Marian insisted I'd offended the Moon Goddess. They demanded that the Elder Council call me back to the temple to prove my innocence, or the goddess would punish the whole Shattered Star pack. The gossip spread fast. When Kyle heard, his face darkened, and he got up to leave.I took his hand. "I'll handle it myself."Kyle frowned

Near the gate, Victor ran straight into Marian, who was hurrying over."Victor, did you find Della? Is she still mad at me? Maybe I should go apologize to her..."Victor cut her off. "You planned what happened at the Luna's house yesterday, didn't you?"Marian froze, and tears quickly welled up in her eyes.Without thinking, she glanced toward Noah and Lisa."Victor, I didn't!"I only asked why she hadn't waited for me. Then she got angry, called me lowborn, and said she looked down on..."Noah stepped up from behind Victor, his voice heavy. "Enough."Noah had always smiled when he talked to Marian. Even when she messed up, he'd been gentle with her.But this time he was scowling, and he couldn't hide his anger.Marian's crying broke off, and she looked at him, hurt. "Noah, you think it's my fault too?"But have any of you thought that maybe this was all Della's plan?"She's just jealous that I took you away from her, so she wants revenge on me!"Lisa didn't comfort her the way she use

In the end, Victor thought of Margaret.Della had gone to her home to say goodbye before she left. When they got there, Margaret was sitting in the courtyard, tasting the sweets Della had brought her. Before he could speak, Margaret said, "Della's already gone."When she came to say goodbye, she said she was going to the Silver Moon pack to become Kyle's mate."Victor's chest tightened. He forced out the words. "Become his mate? How could she..."Margaret looked up at him. "Why couldn't she?"Victor, when you gave her ticket to someone else, did you ask her?"When you shut her in that trap, did you ask her?"Victor opened his mouth. He wanted to say it had only been a punishment, that Della had upset Marian so much she'd fainted. But under Margaret's stare, he couldn't get the words out.Noah hung his head, Lisa clutched the hem of her shirt, and neither of them said anything.Margaret went on."She was born weak and didn't awaken her wolf until she was 19. Her wolf has always been uns

Victor didn't think of Della again until the following evening. The night before, they'd rushed to the hospital. The healer said Marian was emotionally overwhelmed and needed rest.So Victor, Noah, and Lisa had stayed by her bed and never left her side.By morning, Marian felt better. She said she'd bought tickets to the extra show and didn't want them to go to waste. So the three of them took her to see the stand-up show.Afterward, they went out to eat. Marian's eyes crinkled with laughter, as if she'd finally gotten over all the hurt.Only when the waiter brought out Della's favorite strawberry milk did Victor abruptly set down his glass."Where's Della?"Noah and Lisa froze at the same time. They'd left Della in a trap deep in the forest the day before and promised to get her once Marian calmed down. Then Marian had cried at the hospital, and they'd been so busy comforting her that they'd forgotten all about it.Victor went pale. The three of them rushed to the forest. But there wa

I turned to Margaret first and gave her a slight bow."Luna, I'm sorry to disturb you. I'm moving to the Silver Moon pack soon, so I came to say goodbye."Without another glance at Victor and the others, I turned and left. When I reached the end of the lane, Victor caught up and grabbed my arm."Della, are you done throwing your fit?"I stopped and looked back at him."Victor, let's break up."He clearly hadn't expected that. He froze for a few seconds, then his face darkened."Just don't regret it later."I ignored him, pulled my arm free, and went straight home. When I opened the door, several people were standing in the living room.Kyle was directing his men as they carried boxes. My mother stood to one side, smiling. When she saw me come in, she waved me over."There you are. The moment Kyle heard you were moving, he brought his men over to help you pack this morning."Kyle turned to look at me."Almost everything's packed. I've left your personal things for you to go through your

My temples throbbed, and my chest grew tighter.Because my wolf was unstable, I couldn't handle this kind of conflict.I wasn't up to arguing with them. I pushed myself up from the sofa."I'm not feeling well. You should all go."Before I could turn away, hands clamped around both my wrists.Noah and Lisa each had hold of an arm, gripping so hard my wrists went red right away."You're not going anywhere until this is settled."Noah frowned. "Apologize to Marian and eat the cake. Then we'll forget this ever happened."Lisa chimed in. "Marian was nice enough to buy you a cake. Don't be so ungrateful."I stared at them, suddenly struck by how absurd it all was."I'm allergic to chestnuts. The healer said I can never touch them for the rest of my life."You forgot. I didn't."All four of them froze. While they stood there stunned, I pulled my hands free, went upstairs, and locked my bedroom door.Early the next morning, I brought a gift to Margaret, the Luna of our Shattered Star pack, to
