Chapter 4

Author: Sun Keeper
I packed my few personal belongings into my suitcase.

Originally, I had planned to spend two more days with my family before starting my new job at the Royal Werewolf Research Institute.

But now, there was no point.

I was leaving early.

The sudden ringing of my phone interrupted my thoughts.

The screen showed Damian Barlow, my mate.

Today was supposed to be the day he marked me.

I thought he had finally remembered the mate he had abandoned at the altar. I thought he was calling to give me an explanation for what had happened at the marking ceremony.

Instead, the moment I answered, his furious accusations hit me.

"Ophelia! What exactly did you do to Vivian? Why was she sent to the healer's den?"

The mature and grounded Damian had lost control twice in a single day for the same shewolf.

The first time was when he heard that Vivian had returned to the pack and abandoned our ceremony without a second thought.

The second time was now.

How ironic. He was supposed to be my mate.

"I don't know. I suppose she was poisoned."

"What do you mean, you don't know? You're just too afraid to admit that you harmed Vivian, isn't that right?"

Damian's voice was stern with rage. I could almost imagine him wanting to tear me apart.

"Ophelia, I always thought you were a kind-hearted shewolf. Just because we went to pick her up and missed your marking ceremony, you got jealous and poisoned her badly enough to send her to the healer's den! How can you be so heartless?"

I listened quietly to his accusations.

When he finally finished, I spoke.

"You're right. I'm heartless.

"It's my fault. When Vivian comes back, I'll apologize to her. Is that good enough?

"If that's all you called to say, I'm hanging up. I have important things to do."

Damian was stunned.

He clearly hadn't expected that reaction from me.

Prior to this, we had argued countless times over Vivian.

When Damian and I went on dates in Moonlight Forest, he could spend so much time messaging Vivian in Royal City that he completely forgot I was there.

When we attended pack banquets together, he couldn't remember that I was allergic to moonlight berries, yet he always remembered to bring Vivian the freshest rabbit meat.

On countless occasions, I had tearfully demanded to know who he truly considered his mate.

Every time, he would answer with righteous indignation.

"Are you insane? You're actually jealous of your own twin sister, Vivian? When I look at her, it's like looking at a frailer version of you. I only take care of her for your sake!"

His self-righteous excuses made me look like a paranoid, petty woman consumed by jealousy.

My parents and Harlow always took his side. They criticized me for being the older sister yet having no tolerance for my younger sibling.

The truth was that during the year Vivian had spent studying in Royal City, I had secretly rejoiced.

I thought that if she wasn't around, perhaps my parents, Harlow, and Damian would finally see me for who I was.

I was so desperate for love that I forgot a simple truth. Pretending to be someone I wasn't would only end up hurting me.

"Ophelia, I hope you know what you did wrong!

"If anything else happens to Vivian, then forget about our marking ceremony. It won't ever happen in this lifetime!"

Damian was threatening me.

I heard a car door slam on the other end of the call. After hearing some footsteps, it became noisy around him.

I knew he had probably gone to the healer's den. He was anxious to visit my dear sister.

Damian used the excuse of being my mate while showering Vivian with attention and care. Did he really think I was dumb?

I smiled sarcastically before hanging up. I then contacted the research institute.

By evening, the sky had gradually turned dark.

I had just dragged my suitcase outside and was ready to head to the airport when familiar voices drifted in from beyond the door.

My parents and Harlow were back.

I quickly slipped behind a tree.

I didn't want to run into them and create any unnecessary complications.

Mom's voice reached me.

"If Damian's family hadn't fallen on hard times, he wouldn't be such a bad choice for Vivian.

"Just look at how attentive he was while taking care of her today."

I clenched the hem of my clothes.

Dad sounded regretful.

"Yes. That boy is talented, tall, and handsome. When Vivian looked at him from her sickbed, there was affection in her eyes too.

"If we'd known they were attracted to each other, we shouldn't have gone to all that trouble to match Damian with Ophelia."

"Enough. There's no point talking about that now." Mom changed the subject. "No matter how good Damian is, he's still just a poor boy. I won't let Vivian suffer by marrying him. Vivian deserves a mate from a superior bloodline.

"Once Damian and Ophelia hold their marking ceremony, he'll become one of the family. He can still protect Vivian."

So that was it.

To them, Damian was just a loyal hound keeping Vivian safe, and I was nothing but the leash they used to keep him there.

My heart felt cold. Yet I wasn't surprised by their cruelty.

It didn't matter. It was time for me to go.

I was leaving this place and the people here who had caused me so much pain.

I walked further away and gradually disappeared into the darkness of the night.

The Alpha King approached us.It turned out he hadn't left. He had been silently watching from a distance.Everyone immediately knelt respectfully. The Alpha King walked to my side and reached out to steady me. He stood protectively beside me.Looking down at Damian, who was kneeling on the ground, he spoke with unquestionable authority."Ophelia is treasured by the entire werewolf kingdom. No one is permitted to disrespect her."Under the crushing pressure, Damian struggled to raise his head.Clenching his jaw, he tried to defend himself despite his pale face."Your Majesty, I am her mate! We only had a minor disagreement. I never intended to hurt her."The Alpha King ignored him. Instead, he turned to face me with a questioning look.I stepped forward and calmly looked at Damian."Without completing the marking ceremony, we were never truly mates."Damian, I don't love you anymore."We have no relationship now."Damian looked horrified."How can you say that? Ophelia,

This time, no matter how Vivian cried, apologized, or desperately begged for forgiveness, none of them budged.Harlow personally threw her out of the house.Soon afterward, they watched the rest of the surveillance footage. On the screen, I was carrying my old, battered suitcase as I quietly walked out the front door. The timestamp overlapped with the time they had just arrived home. They realized that I had most likely overheard what they said after getting out of the car. It was about how they couldn't bear the thought of Vivian being marked by Damian.Mom covered her face and began to cry. Meanwhile, Harlow and Dad slumped weakly against the sofa.Damian had no idea what had happened, but he could tell that something else had gone terribly wrong, so he didn't dare ask. They were eager to find me.After checking the flights that had departed since then, they discovered that there had been only one flight to Royal City.Convinced that I had gone there, they quickly bought th

"Let's try calling her first."After saying that, Harlow retrieved his phone. But when he called, he discovered that my number was no longer in service. All of my social media accounts had also been deleted.Damian thought for a moment."Who was the last person to see Ophelia that day?"Mom hesitated."Perhaps the maid."She immediately called the maid into the dining room."Did Ophelia say anything to you before she left? Did you notice anything unusual?"The maid lowered her head while nervously fidgeting with her fingers."Ophelia was knocked to the floor that day. You all took Vivian to the healer's den. I wanted to help Ophelia get up, but I noticed that her hands were severely swollen. It looked like a serious allergic reaction."She refused my help and went back to her room by herself. I never saw her again after that.""An allergic reaction?"Mom froze. The color gradually drained from her face. She vaguely recalled that, a long time ago, I had mentioned being all

Meanwhile, my work at the Royal Werewolf Research Institute quickly settled into a routine.I was very patient. To verify a single hypothesis, I could stay in the laboratory for two weeks without leaving.I didn't find it exhausting. This simple yet fulfilling life gave me a sense of peace and stability. Before long, I earned the appreciation of the chief researcher. My colleagues were also very kind and often invited me to afternoon tea.My own family couldn't remember my favorite food or the things I was allergic to, but my colleagues could.Occasionally, in the quiet of the night, I would still think about the family and memories I had left behind, but I realized that they could no longer stir any emotions within me.They had chosen Vivian, and I had chosen myself.I assumed that without me, the werewolf they found so unpleasant, getting in their way, they were probably living together happily. But I was only half right. At first, they truly believed that I would eventuall

The lock turned with a click.Harlow pushed the door open.He expected to see me lying there, barely alive, and perhaps crying bitterly in remorse, but that wasn't the case at all.The room was empty, and the bed was perfectly made. There wasn't a single crease to suggest that anyone had slept in it.Harlow froze in the doorway."What are you standing there for?"Dad, whose view was blocked by Harlow's broad back, frowned impatiently."Did that wretched girl go crazy in there and trash the whole room?"Harlow turned around in bewilderment. "No. There's no one in the room. Ophelia isn't here," he said with a tone of disbelief."How's that possible?" Mom asked confusedly.Dad snorted and stepped forward before pushing Harlow aside. As he walked into the room, he said with certainty, "Harlow, you're being foolish. Don't let her little tricks fool you. She must have heard us coming and gotten scared, so she's hiding somewhere."Dad looked around the dimly lit room. His tone w

I boarded a plane bound for Royal City.Meanwhile, my parents and Harlow pushed open the doors of the villa."Damn it. Why is it so dark? Ophelia? Ophelia!"Harlow's angry voice echoed through the empty living room."Come out and explain yourself!"When no one answered, Dad frowned deeply. The maid stepped out of her room, keeping her eyes lowered."Mr. Perry, Harlow, Ophelia went back to her room earlier. Perhaps she's already sleeping and didn't hear you.""Didn't hear us? I think she's just feeling guilty."Harlow's expression darkened as he moved toward my door. He clearly intended to kick it open.Mom stepped forward and stopped him. "Ophelia is an adult now. You shouldn't just barge into her room. Talk to her properly."Harlow reluctantly stopped and pounded hard on my door."Ophelia, stop hiding in there and pretending not to hear me. I know you're in there!"There was nothing but silence. His patience quickly ran out.He sneered."Mom, do you really think she wa
