The police officer turned the tablet screen around and held it in front of me. I stared at it for several seconds and read the information again and again. The household registration system showed my family status: divorced, one child. Child’s name: Luke Zane. Date of birth: June 1, 2019. My name was Maya Delaney. I was female, unmarried. "Miss Delaney." The officer frowned. "The child got separated from his family at the mall. As his only legal guardian, how can you deny that you ever gave birth to him?" On June 1, 2019, I worked as an exhibition planner and flew all over the country. I spent nearly 300 nights a year in budget hotels or curled up in plastic airport chairs. On Children’s Day, my ride‑hailing records showed my exhausted trip at 3 o’clock in the morning from the international expo center to the airport. I was so busy I barely had time to find a boyfriend. I could not have had a child. So then, whose child was the five‑year‑old boy who sat on the police station bench and cried his eyes out?

Chapter 1

The officer’s expression had already turned impatient.

"The system does not lie."

I gave a small laugh.

"The system does not lie, but the people who entered the information could."

The room fell silent for two seconds.

Another officer, older than the others, looked up at me.

I unlocked my phone, pulled up my ride‑hailing history, then opened my company email and found the travel confirmation records from around June 1, 2019.

"This was my trip from the international expo center to the airport at 3 a.m. on Children’s Day that year.

"You do not seriously think I gave birth to a child in a taxi, do you?"

The younger officer frowned. "Miss Zane, please calm down."

I added, "I would like to see the original records."

"Original records?"

"The marriage registration files, the birth registration records, and the documents used to register the child’s state and schooling information. If the system said I was divorced and had a child, then there must be a marriage certificate, a divorce certificate, a birth certificate, and proof of a parent‑child relationship.

"Find those documents. Then I will acknowledge this child."

The officers exchanged glances.

The older one stood up. His tone softened.

"Please sit down. We will verify everything."

Ten minutes later, a scanned marriage registration document appeared on the computer screen.

Female name: Maya Delaney.

ID number: mine.

Photo: my official ID photo.

However, that photo had been pasted onto a marriage registration picture. The proportions were wrong. The head was too large, the body too small, and the shoulders did not line up. It looked like someone had cut out my ID photo and pasted it onto another person’s image.

I stared at the screen as my palms slowly began to sweat.

Male name: Sebastian Zane.

Registered hometown: L City.

I had never heard that name before.

However, when the officer saw it, his expression changed instantly.

He lowered his voice.

"Sebastian Zane? The Zane family from L City?"

The younger officer whispered, "The Zane family that worked in real estate and pharmaceuticals?"

It was a top‑tier billionaire family.

My identity had been used to marry one of the richest men in the country.

Registration date was April 18, 2018, and the registration location was the civil affairs bureau in my hometown county.

I opened my company’s internal attendance system and pulled up my records from April 2018.

I was in the Shanghai International Convention Center. It was a closed‑door bidding project.

I stayed there for 12 consecutive days, from eight in the morning until one the next morning every day. Every check‑in had a location record.

I pushed my phone toward them.

"I was in Shanghai on this day.

"These attendance records proved I never went back to my hometown."

This time, the officer did not say the system could not be wrong.

The older officer’s expression became serious as he issued me a receipt.

"Your identity information appears to have been stolen. We will contact the state records office and the civil affairs department for verification."

He glanced at the child who sat on the bench, then looked back at me.

"The child will be placed under the temporary care of a social welfare agency. You will need to cooperate with the investigation."

I nodded.

Suddenly, the child looked up at me and timidly called out, "Mom..."

That single word felt like a needle that pierced straight into my heart.

It was not because I felt sympathy.

It sent chills down my entire body.

I took half a step back.

I did not know whose child he was. I knew one thing. He was not mine.

When I walked out of the police station, the cold night wind hit my face. Only then did I realize my entire back was soaked with sweat.

I sat in my car and did not drive away.

I called my father, Victor.

"Maya? What got you to call your old man all of a sudden?"
