Chapter 2

작가: Kaching Baby
Dylan stared at me in disbelief. "Both of us?"

"Yeah," I said with a nod. "You're the guy she loves. If we leave you behind, she's not going to budge. Pack your bags. You're moving into the Ashby residence with her."

I kept my voice completely deadpan, stripped of any emotion. "Her folks already know about you. They aren't going to stand in your way."

It was like Dylan had just won the lottery. He grabbed Eleanor's hand, beaming at her with a massive grin, and immediately turned to pack their things.

Only then did Eleanor seem convinced that I meant Dylan no harm. Her lips thinned slightly, her demeanor softening. "Sorry about earlier. I thought you were here to start trouble with him."

Her entire universe revolved around Dylan now.

It made me think back to the volunteer relief drives, back when Dylan would watch her from the sidelines.

Eleanor would give me a helpless look, yank on the sleeve of my coat, and push me out in front of her. She'd put on this hilariously stern face and tell me to start acting like her fiance to scare off the competition.

Later, we'd collapse into each other's embrace in the corner of the medical station, laughing so hard we could barely breathe.

Alas, Eleanor wasn't mine anymore.

I tugged at the corners of my lips and drove the two of them back to the Ashby residence.

When it came time to introduce me, the living room fell dead silent. A roomful of her relatives was completely paralyzed by how to break the news to her.

So, I stepped up and did it for them.

"I'm the medic from your unit. We served on the border together, and you've always treated me like an elder brother. You used to badger me about my love life, but I guess the amnesia wiped that out."

Eleanor didn't suspect a thing. She let out a bright, easy laugh as she retorted, "Got it. Well, once Dylan is all settled in, I'm making it my personal mission to find you a wife."

In the middle of the night, a harsh orange glow woke me up.

I pushed open my bedroom door and went outside, only to realize that every single memory of our life together was fueling a massive bonfire.

The tactical flashlight I'd bought her, our deployment medals, even the matching engagement rings she'd custom-made out of shell casings—everything was crackling and popping, turning to ash.

A sharp pain seized my chest.

Just then, Eleanor turned around and met my gaze.

"Look, we used to be partners, so I never really thought twice about keeping these things around. But Dylan's living here now. I don't want him getting the wrong idea if he finds these things, so I'm burning them. No hard feelings, right?"

I dug my fingernails into my palms, desperate to keep her from seeing how badly she'd hurt me.

"None at all," I said quietly. "Actually, hold on. Let's burn the stuff from my room, too."

I went back inside, grabbed every last relic of our past, and chucked them right into the flames.

The heat rolled off the fire in waves, but I felt like I was standing naked in a blizzard.

Over the next few days, the yard sounded like a construction zone.

The entire yard used to be packed with herbs Eleanor had planted by hand to help with my chronic pain. Now, she was tearing them all out by the roots to build a vegetable garden for Dylan.

The wisteria trellis we'd built for our backyard wedding reception was ripped down, replaced by a row of basic clotheslines for Dylan's laundry.

They even sledgehammered the brick wall where we'd carved our initials, hauled the debris away, and put down a flowerbed because Dylan wanted one.

And on the day they were putting the seeds in the ground, Dylan cornered me at the yard.

During the countless days spent quietly watching me from afar, Eleanor questioned her choices more times than she could count. She wondered if she should just force me to stay with her, keeping me chained to her side by any means necessary. I would probably hate her for it, but at least I would still be within her reach. In fact, the jealousy and possessiveness in her chest would spike whenever she saw me flashing Nicola those bright, carefree smiles.Yet, whenever she pictured how I endured my agony during my chronic pain flare-ups, her hands would shake, and she would lower her phone, deleting whatever text message she'd been typing out.She knew better than anyone that I absolutely detested letting anyone see me look vulnerable. But I never pushed Nicola away during those moments, and I would even pull her into a tender embrace instead. When I was with Nicola, the light in my eyes and the ease of my smile were completely genuine.Eleanor couldn't bring herself to steal that j

Eleanor froze where she stood, her eyes vacant.High-risk deployment? Letting her go?The news hit her like a physical blow, making her heart splinter. The memories of that bonfire rushed back all at once, making her chest tighten so painfully that it stole the air right out of her lungs."That can't be true…" she whispered.I had promised her that we would guard the borders together. The world spun violently around her. Her vision went dark, and she tumbled down the stone steps of the Ashby residence.Just before she lost consciousness, she caught a glimpse of the small rose garden in the yard. In that split second, she realized that the plot of land should've been packed with herbs instead.…The next time I ran into Eleanor was the day I went back to the hospital for my checkup. She had lost an incredible amount of weight. Her skin was bloodless, and the heavy dark circles under her eyes proved she hadn't slept in days."What are you doing back here?" I asked, glancing o

"Callum!"Eleanor bolted upright in bed, a raw, ragged scream breaking the silence of the room."Eleanor, you're awake!" Dylan exclaimed, his initial explosion of relief instantly dissolving into sobs. "Thank God you're finally awake. I didn't know what I was going to do if you didn't pull through."Your parents would've absolutely hated me for the rest of my life. The guilt would've destroyed me. I shouldn't have ever let you climb that tower for me. This is completely on me."Eleanor didn't say a word as she listened to his rambling. Her gaze settled on the face of the man she'd spent her amnesia doting on, her voice hoarse. "Where's Callum?"Dylan froze, his jaw tightening as he scrambled to poison her mind against me."Why are you even asking about him? You've been stuck in the hospital for so long, and he hasn't shown his face once. "That's just who he is, Eleanor. He hitched his wagon to your star when you were a celebrated captain, but the second you fell on hard times,

If I had actually been Eleanor's boyfriend in the past, what did her falling for Dylan mean for me?The next time her mind started drifting, Dylan subtly clenched his fists but kept his tone helpless and coy. "Eleanor, you aren't listening to me at all. Do you even love me anymore?"Eleanor snapped back to reality, pressing her lips together. "Sorry about that.""Do you even know what I just said?"She shook her head honestly."Lately, these nightmares have been eating me alive," Dylan said, his tone tinged with a hint of helplessness. "Can we please go up to that old chapel behind the mountain so the bishop can bless us? People say the chapel is a miracle worker, and if we pray hard enough, the nightmares will finally stop."Eleanor was quiet for a moment before nodding. "Alright, let's do it."They drove out to the old chapel on the outskirts of town, where Eleanor made sure to buy a rosary for Dylan.According to the chapel's traditions, the ritual wasn't complete unless the

Eleanor kept telling herself that there was no reason for a former coworker to occupy so much space in her head. Even if her parents, our comrades, and I had all explicitly told her that she only ever saw me like a brother, she shouldn't have cared about me this much. But what if the guy from that memory really was me? If that were true, what exactly had we been to each other? She bolted to her feet so fast that her chair screeched against the floor with a loud crash.Meeting Dylan's bewildered look, she pressed her lips into a thin line and said, "I'm going to check on Callum."She'd barely made a move before Dylan caught the hem of her shirt.Eleanor looked down into his tear-filled eyes as he whimpered, "Eleanor, does that mean you're dumping me by going to Mr. Pierce?"She couldn't understand why he was suddenly acting so deeply wounded, but she softened her voice anyway. "Don't worry. I'm just going to clear a few things up with him."Did Eleanor regain her memory? If she

  • This Time, I Let Her Forget Me   Chapter 5

The entire hospital was buzzing with the news that Eleanor had flown in leading experts on post-traumatic stress disorder just to ensure Dylan suffered no lasting psychological fallout from the incident. After his assessment, Dylan offered to share a pear with Eleanor as a thoughtful gesture.Eleanor's voice was laced with a mix of fondness and gentle reluctance. "We shouldn't share a pear, Dylan. It sounds too much like despair. We survived so many hardships back in that village, and all I want now is to live a peaceful life with you."The moment the words left her mouth, a stray fragment of memory flashed through Eleanor's mind.It was an afternoon just after the first gunfire had ceased. The wind was whipping the canvas flap of the medical station's tent, bringing in the smell of gunpowder, dust, and the heavy humidity of the distant rainforest.I took a bite out of a pear, then casually pressed the remaining half against her lips. When the memory of her younger self realiz
