"Captain Ashby lost her memory. She insists the clinic caretaker, Dylan Foster, is her husband and refuses to come with us. But we've already contacted the army's top neurosurgeons. We can schedule her treatments as early as next week to help her remember you."

The conversation was identical to the one from my previous life when I first found Eleanor Ashby.

Only this time, the ecstatic joy and bitter resentment were gone, replaced by total serenity.

I shook my head, declining the offer, and did two things afterward.

First, I submitted a long-term deployment request to the medical corps, volunteering for the war-torn regions of Irvia.

Second, I took the approved deployment papers and went to call off the engagement, returning a ring polished from a bullet casing.

It was the engagement ring Eleanor had made at the border years ago. She hadn't even had the chance to slip it onto my finger.

Eleanor's mother, Rosalie Quinn, clutched my hands, refusing to let go, her tears soaking her collar.

"You can't call off the engagement. Eleanor went through hell and back with you for ten years. The date has been set for ages. If you walk away now, she'll never marry anyone else for the rest of her life…"

I didn't say a word. I simply unlocked my phone and played a video.

In the video, Eleanor was picking flowers in the clinic's courtyard, and Dylan was gently wiping the sweat from her brow.

As they looked at each other and smiled, the tenderness and chemistry between them were impossible to hide.

"The situation in Irvia is pure chaos. There's no guarantee I'll even make it back alive," I said. "Instead of forcing her to marry someone like me, who could kick the bucket tomorrow, it's better to let her be with the man she loves now. I don't want to hold her back anymore."

In my previous life, after Eleanor fell off the cliff, I spent two years searching for her, only to find out she had been rescued by Dylan, a caretaker at a village clinic, and that they had been playing house at the foot of the mountain ever since.

Regardless of Eleanor's wishes, I forced her to undergo memory retrieval therapy.

The day she remembered everything, Dylan drowned himself in the river right in front of her, and from that moment on, a seed of bitter resentment was planted between us.

The high school sweethearts who had once promised to guard the borders together turned into toxic exes who couldn't stand the sight of each other.

That was until we were trapped during an earthquake rescue mission. She forced me into the only escape route, leaving herself behind.

As her voice gradually faded into the rubble, her final words to me were, "We're even now. I owe you nothing."

I knew she had done all that just to make amends for forgetting me and falling for someone else, not because she still loved me.

Tamping down the bitterness welling up in my chest, I uttered softly, "There's no going back for Eleanor and me."

In this life, I would never repeat that mistake.

Leaving the Ashby residence, I headed to the village clinic to find Dylan.

The moment Dylan caught sight of me, he panicked and hurriedly ushered Eleanor away to sort some freshly dried herbs.

He scrambled to defend himself. "I didn't hide Eleanor here for two years on purpose!"

"The special forces need a star soldier like her," I said flatly. "Whether you kept her trapped here for your own sake, you know the answer."

Realizing he couldn't play dumb anymore, Dylan clenched his fists tightly. Throwing caution to the wind, he grew visibly emotional.

"Callum, I know the deal! You're the only one she's ever cared about! The second she gets her memory back, she'll drop me like a hot potato and run right back to her former unit with you!

"But when the medical team came to the clinic for that volunteer drive, and I first saw her, I fell head over heels. I waited for so many years, never daring to hope I could even get close to her. I finally got this one shot…

"I just wanted her to be my wife for a few days. Just a few days…"

By the time he finished, he was practically choking back tears.

I listened quietly, but my gaze drifted past him, landing on Eleanor behind him. Her brows were knitted tight as she stared me down, her eyes cold as ice, dripping with suspicion and hostility.

The partner who used to have my back in the field now looked at me like I was an enemy.

I couldn't quite describe the emotions in my chest.

I only knew that since I had a second chance at life, I didn't intend to selfishly drag Eleanor back to her old life anymore.

A faint smile touched my lips as I looked at Dylan. "You don't have to be afraid. I'm not here to break you two up. I'm just here to take you both back to the Ashbys."

During the countless days spent quietly watching me from afar, Eleanor questioned her choices more times than she could count. She wondered if she should just force me to stay with her, keeping me chained to her side by any means necessary. I would probably hate her for it, but at least I would still be within her reach. In fact, the jealousy and possessiveness in her chest would spike whenever she saw me flashing Nicola those bright, carefree smiles.Yet, whenever she pictured how I endured my agony during my chronic pain flare-ups, her hands would shake, and she would lower her phone, deleting whatever text message she'd been typing out.She knew better than anyone that I absolutely detested letting anyone see me look vulnerable. But I never pushed Nicola away during those moments, and I would even pull her into a tender embrace instead. When I was with Nicola, the light in my eyes and the ease of my smile were completely genuine.Eleanor couldn't bring herself to steal that j

Eleanor froze where she stood, her eyes vacant.High-risk deployment? Letting her go?The news hit her like a physical blow, making her heart splinter. The memories of that bonfire rushed back all at once, making her chest tighten so painfully that it stole the air right out of her lungs."That can't be true…" she whispered.I had promised her that we would guard the borders together. The world spun violently around her. Her vision went dark, and she tumbled down the stone steps of the Ashby residence.Just before she lost consciousness, she caught a glimpse of the small rose garden in the yard. In that split second, she realized that the plot of land should've been packed with herbs instead.…The next time I ran into Eleanor was the day I went back to the hospital for my checkup. She had lost an incredible amount of weight. Her skin was bloodless, and the heavy dark circles under her eyes proved she hadn't slept in days."What are you doing back here?" I asked, glancing o

"Callum!"Eleanor bolted upright in bed, a raw, ragged scream breaking the silence of the room."Eleanor, you're awake!" Dylan exclaimed, his initial explosion of relief instantly dissolving into sobs. "Thank God you're finally awake. I didn't know what I was going to do if you didn't pull through."Your parents would've absolutely hated me for the rest of my life. The guilt would've destroyed me. I shouldn't have ever let you climb that tower for me. This is completely on me."Eleanor didn't say a word as she listened to his rambling. Her gaze settled on the face of the man she'd spent her amnesia doting on, her voice hoarse. "Where's Callum?"Dylan froze, his jaw tightening as he scrambled to poison her mind against me."Why are you even asking about him? You've been stuck in the hospital for so long, and he hasn't shown his face once. "That's just who he is, Eleanor. He hitched his wagon to your star when you were a celebrated captain, but the second you fell on hard times,

If I had actually been Eleanor's boyfriend in the past, what did her falling for Dylan mean for me?The next time her mind started drifting, Dylan subtly clenched his fists but kept his tone helpless and coy. "Eleanor, you aren't listening to me at all. Do you even love me anymore?"Eleanor snapped back to reality, pressing her lips together. "Sorry about that.""Do you even know what I just said?"She shook her head honestly."Lately, these nightmares have been eating me alive," Dylan said, his tone tinged with a hint of helplessness. "Can we please go up to that old chapel behind the mountain so the bishop can bless us? People say the chapel is a miracle worker, and if we pray hard enough, the nightmares will finally stop."Eleanor was quiet for a moment before nodding. "Alright, let's do it."They drove out to the old chapel on the outskirts of town, where Eleanor made sure to buy a rosary for Dylan.According to the chapel's traditions, the ritual wasn't complete unless the

Eleanor kept telling herself that there was no reason for a former coworker to occupy so much space in her head. Even if her parents, our comrades, and I had all explicitly told her that she only ever saw me like a brother, she shouldn't have cared about me this much. But what if the guy from that memory really was me? If that were true, what exactly had we been to each other? She bolted to her feet so fast that her chair screeched against the floor with a loud crash.Meeting Dylan's bewildered look, she pressed her lips into a thin line and said, "I'm going to check on Callum."She'd barely made a move before Dylan caught the hem of her shirt.Eleanor looked down into his tear-filled eyes as he whimpered, "Eleanor, does that mean you're dumping me by going to Mr. Pierce?"She couldn't understand why he was suddenly acting so deeply wounded, but she softened her voice anyway. "Don't worry. I'm just going to clear a few things up with him."Did Eleanor regain her memory? If she

The entire hospital was buzzing with the news that Eleanor had flown in leading experts on post-traumatic stress disorder just to ensure Dylan suffered no lasting psychological fallout from the incident. After his assessment, Dylan offered to share a pear with Eleanor as a thoughtful gesture.Eleanor's voice was laced with a mix of fondness and gentle reluctance. "We shouldn't share a pear, Dylan. It sounds too much like despair. We survived so many hardships back in that village, and all I want now is to live a peaceful life with you."The moment the words left her mouth, a stray fragment of memory flashed through Eleanor's mind.It was an afternoon just after the first gunfire had ceased. The wind was whipping the canvas flap of the medical station's tent, bringing in the smell of gunpowder, dust, and the heavy humidity of the distant rainforest.I took a bite out of a pear, then casually pressed the remaining half against her lips. When the memory of her younger self realiz
