Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
When Seth and Catherine returned, they could be seen holding hands.

Seth carefully helped Catherine onto the wagon. Once they were properly seated, I finally saw their faces clearly.

Catherine's lips were reddened and glossy. Meanwhile, Seth had an obvious red mark decorating his neck.

Everyone turned around to look at me coolly. They were all waiting for me to lose my temper.

After all, I'd kick up a fuss whenever I saw Seth being close to other women. I'd also pester him, warning him not to speak with other people as well.

There was blatant vigilance in Seth's eyes. He was also worried that I might get mad at Catherine.

But a few minutes had already passed. I didn't react to the incident at all.

Seth was stunned at first. Then, he sneered at me. "Oh? You've finally learned to be demure now that we're about to get married. To think that you're not throwing a tantrum over this."

I merely ignored him. Once we reached the town, I walked away immediately.

When I was done buying what I needed in the town, I was waiting for the next wagon when Seth grabbed me.

"It's about to get dark soon. Let's go home together."

It wasn't safe for me to be alone at night, so I didn't turn Seth's offer down.

Once the wagon arrived, I wanted to go around Seth so that I could sit next to the man in charge of steering the horses. But Seth quickly stopped me.

"You go sit next to Mr. Miller."

After that, he helped Catherine onto the wagon.

"Sorry about that, Callista. Seth cares a lot about me. It'll get very crowded on the wagon if too many people sit together."

The three of us were the only ones who had yet to return to the village. Instead of saying anything, I sat on the bumpy front-row seat that I was already planning to take from the start.

On the way back to the village, Seth and Catherine chatted with each other merrily.

As the sky gradually darkened, Catherine began acting coquettishly around Seth. Claiming to be cold, she asked him to warm her hands. Their fingers intertwined, and soon they inched nearer as well.

The atmosphere grew amorous between them. Even their breathing started becoming heavier.

But Seth whipped around to look at me all of a sudden, finally realizing that I was there too.

For some reason, my failure to glance back made his face fall. He then started sweet-talking Catherine loudly.

Once we reached the village entrance, Seth did something that he had never done before. He actually grabbed my hand before stuffing a wildflower into my palm.

"That's enough. Stop acting like you don't care," he said in a placating tone. "Think of this flower as my way of making it up to you. As long as you stay docile and demure like how you acted earlier, I'll go through the wedding ceremony with you. At the very least, the villagers will think that you're my wife."

I could tell that there was an underlying meaning in Seth's words.

"Who's going to be your actual wife once we're out of the village, then? Is it Catherine?"

Rage colored Seth's expression once he realized that his innermost thoughts were exposed. But a flash of smugness was present as well.

"I knew that you were acting all along! Don't go around telling your parents about what happened. You will never understand my relationship with Catherine. She's a meticulous woman, unlike you, who's often brash and rowdy. If you upset her in any way, don't blame me when I decide to skip the wedding altogether!"

How ridiculous! Seth was the two-timing bastard here, yet he wanted me to endure all of the pain and agony on my own!

I looked down at the wildflower in my hand. I had been pursuing Seth for so long, yet he never remembered the fact that I was allergic to pollen.

"By the way, lend me 150 dollars. I want to buy some books. Once my family mails me money, I'll pay you back."

I had lost count of how many times Seth told me the same thing. The thing was, he never returned any cash to me.

I just huffed coldly before walking home right away. Seth could be heard hollering my name angrily from behind.

As soon as I walked through the front door, I saw Catherine toying with her new watch. I recognized it as an item only sold in a department store in the town.

"Oh, Callista! Look at how expensive this watch is! It's worth 150 dollars!"

Catherine's smug expression and the fact that the watch cost 150 dollars cut me deeply in my heart.

Upon noticing how distraught I looked, she leaned into my ear before murmuring, "Has Seth ever told you that I'm the one he truly loves? My dear Callista, you've led a good life for far too long. This time, it's my turn to become the major general's wife."

It turned out that… Catherine had gotten reborn as well.

When he woke up, I thought he'd get mad at me. After all, he got hurt because of my old crush on Seth.Weirdly enough, Nathan was the one consoling me. Although Seth was immobilized, he was still determined to crawl in my direction."Callista, I was wrong! Please don't marry someone else! I'll change my ways! Really, I'll do it!"My mother couldn't stomach Seth's words anymore. She didn't hesitate to deliver a heavy slap across Seth's face on the spot."Haven't you bullied my poor Callista enough? What sort of nefarious scheme do you have in mind for you to cause chaos on her big day? "Haven't you trampled all over Callista's pride enough? Not only did you order her around constantly, but you also made her do your laundry during winter! What's worse is that you even humiliated her in front of everyone else!"Did you seriously think that I'd be nice to you if not for the fact that my daughter had a crush on you?"When my mother brought up the ordeals that I was forced to endure in the past, her eyes reddened instantly. I was her precious daughter. Even though the villagers kept pestering my mother to give birth to a son in ord

I could only gaze at Nathan helplessly. But he just passed the paper bag he was carrying to me instead."Hmm?"I accepted the bag before peeking into it. It was a white wedding dress. The moment I laid my eyes on it, I was shell-shocked."Why did you—""I saw it in Shell City. As soon as I spotted it, I knew that it suited you right away. Go change into it. You'll be the most stunning bride today."After that, Nathan pushed me into my room and urged me to wear the wedding dress. As I gazed at my unfamiliar reflection in the mirror, I felt a little dazed. This dress was a lot fancier than the one I had ordered from the tailor.I looked at myself from all angles. Clothes could really elevate a person's appearance. Even I looked beautiful in such a nice dress. As soon as I exited my room, Nathan smiled at me instantly. He praised me sincerely, "You look absolutely stunning!"Then, he opened the car door and helped me into the car. With a heavy heart, I followed Nathan to Crown R

But Nathan's bangle made me feel inferior. I didn't think I could ever present him with the watch I bought for him.I was carrying the box at first, but now I have hidden it behind my back. Still, Nathan spotted my panicked action. A knowing smile soon traced his lips. His baritone—deep and pleasant to the ear—drifted into my ear, but his words made me blush furiously."Is this a wedding gift that you've prepared for me, Callista?"I lacked the courage to look into his eyes, so I nodded demurely.Nathan chuckled softly before extending a hand to me. "Please put it on for me, Callista."I knew that Seth and his friends were watching my every move. Without hesitating, I presented the watch that I had spent a long time picking out at the department store. The moment my cold fingertips made contact with Nathan's warm skin, I could feel a surge of heat passing through me. For some reason, that heat strummed a tender heartstring from within. The length of the watch's straps surprisi

Loud, deep rumbling noises soon boomed from the exterior of my courtyard. The noises instantly attracted everyone's attention. They could see nine cars being parked outside my house. Almost immediately, the originally boisterous atmosphere became eerily silent. When Nathan's men moved brand-new electrical appliances such as a fridge, television, and washing machine—which were still tied up in red ribbons—into the courtyard, someone gasped out loud. The silence was instantly broken."Is… Is that a television?"People who were more well-versed in technology were quick to educate others about the appliances. These appliances were the three major wedding gifts prepared by the city folk. On the other hand, the villagers still thought of bicycles, watches, and sewing machines as the three major gifts needed in a wedding. If the groom could fork out enough cash for a bicycle, his financial situation was considered to be very decent. Since Nathan provided my family with a fridge, a tele

I stumbled toward the river on all fours. The first thing I did was scoop up water from the river and begin splashing it onto my face. The ice-cold water managed to wash away the remnants of the pollen that clung to my nasal cavity. The incident earlier made me lose all hope in Seth. Thank goodness he wasn't the one I'd be marrying in this lifetime. After panting heavily for a long time, I finally got up to my feet. My wedding dress was already torn. Coupled with the fact that Catherine had already worn it, I no longer wanted it.Tomorrow would be my wedding. I needed to go home and look for any other garment that suited the occasion. I didn't want to give Nathan the impression that I didn't care about the wedding at all.As soon as I reached the front door of my house, I could hear Catherine's breathy moans. Through the window, I could see her looking very dazed and euphoric. Seth assumed the top position and continued to thrust away without a care in the world.Although I alre
