Chapter 1

Author: Fortune Wells
“I’m back!” I pushed open the door and was just about to tell my boyfriend that I had won thirty million dollars from the lottery.

As soon as I opened the door, I realized my parents were home too.

My boyfriend, Albert Johnson, walked out too. This time, unlike before, he did not give me a warm hug or ask how I had been.

Instead, he looked at me with a bewildered expression. His eyes seemed to hold both wariness and confusion.

“What’s cooking in the pot?” I walked into the kitchen. Then, I picked up the soup ladle with practiced ease and took a sip. “Not bad, Mr. Chef. Your cooking skills have really improved!”

Just as I picked up a bowl to serve myself some soup, a gentle female voice came from outside the room.

“Honey, do we have guests over?”

As soon as she spoke, I set down the bowl and looked toward the kitchen entrance. A pregnant woman stood beside Albert.

Our eyes met.

Albert looked at the woman and scratched his head. “You don’t know her either? I thought she was a friend of yours!”

After saying that, he walked toward me. “Miss, did you get the wrong address? This is my house!”

“Your house?” I looked at him. Then, I looked at the woman. “You called him your ‘husband’?”

“She’s my wife!” Facing my questioning, Albert showed no sign of panic in his eyes—only composure. “I’m her husband. Who are you?”

A sense of absurdity welled up inside me. I looked up. My parents were both staring at me with confused expressions.

Fear struck me before anger could.

I ran trembling to the door, where the photo of Albert and me had been replaced by one of him and another woman.

I rushed back into the closet like a madwoman. My clothes, pants, and shoes were all gone!

They had been replaced by another woman’s clothes.

“What on earth are you doing?” Albert grabbed my hand. “Please, get out!”

“Why? Why?” I clutched my head. “It’s happening again. This time, the person who’s forgotten me is the one closest to me!”

I broke down in tears. Last time, it was my long-lost friend Jade who had vanished.

Last time, when I went back to my hometown for Thanksgiving, we passed by a run-down house.

I mentioned to Albert how we used to go to Jade’s house for free meals all the time, reminiscing about the happy times from our childhood.

At the time, Albert just looked at me blankly. “That house has been empty for over thirty years! Who is Jade?”

At the time, I thought he had simply forgotten, so I did not think much of it. Later, when I checked my social media, I noticed that Jade’s account had disappeared too.

Back then, I just assumed we had not been in touch for a long time, so she must have unfollowed me on her own. I did not give it a second thought.

Why today, though? My dad, my mom, and even my boyfriend no longer recognized me.

There was not a single trace of me in this room, even though I was clearly here just yesterday.

“You just cheated on me, didn’t you? If you did, just tell me. I can forgive you!” I looked at him.

In the past, I would never have forgiven him for cheating. However, at the moment, I would have preferred it if he had cheated and deliberately concocted this whole lie.

However, Albert’s frown only deepened. Finally, he dialed 911 and had the police take me away.

I was taken to the police station, where an officer said, “I just called your parents. They said they’ll be here to pick you up soon!”

“Who did you call?” As soon as I spoke, I heard an urgent call from behind me.

“Lorraine!”

The air fell deathly silent in an instant. All the cheers in the air vanished without a trace, and not even a single breath could be heard. After a long while, the air in the sky warped slightly. Two transparent, shimmering phantoms slowly materialized. It was a man and a woman. Their forms were translucent, and their features were youthful. They stared at me with blank, incredulous expressions. Their eyes were brimming with utter shock and terror.“Y-You can see us?!” The female spirit’s voice trembled. The male spirit turned deathly pale. Then, he realized the consequences instantly and said frantically, “Oh no! The mission failed! “The trial-taker has prematurely awakened their consciousness. The script has completely collapsed!”“Are you angels?” I asked curiously, looking at them. The female angel nodded. “We are the angels in charge of your trial!”From their words, I understood. All deities in the world must undergo trials when they descend to the mortal realm. Each

After saying that, he walked away. I clutched the business card, frozen in place. I had actually gotten Cylan’s business card.I actually got Cylan’s business card!Just as I was lost in a daze, a man’s voice rang out beside me. “The plot you wrote is so cliche!”The female voice seemed to laugh in exasperation. “Childhood sweethearts. He chases her, and she runs away. Haven’t I written scripts full of ‘doomed lovers’ before? “But now that the plot has reached this point, doesn’t that mean that the script’s storyline is at a dead end?“The male and female leads have only just met. With such a shallow romantic connection, how could they be ‘doomed lovers’?”Then, the two voices started arguing again. After arguing for quite a while, they finally made up.The male voice sounded excited. “The main plotline’s chance encounter has been successfully completed, and the story is back on track.”The female voice still sounded shaken. “Back then, the system made a data entry error. “

The next second, a strange sound suddenly rang in my ears.It sounded like an argument.First came a man’s voice. It sounded like he was speaking with frustration while complaining. “Why did the female lead go to the parcel station first? The male lead is right at the entrance. She should’ve gone to the security guard to get her meal first.”“I worked my butt off trying to manipulate the plot, using countless NPCs to drive the story forward, just to get the male lead here today.”The very next second, a woman’s voice rang out, brimming with resentment. “Do you think it’s easy for me? Do you know how many NPCs I had to use just to get the female lead to leave the house today?“First, it was Mdm. Smith, then the package, then the takeout. Only then was the female lead finally willing to step outside.”“It’s all because you added too many elements. You had to throw in that stupid package. Without it, wouldn’t the female lead have just gone straight to the front gate to pick up her

Besides, a top-tier company like this would never hire someone like me, a third-rate college graduate. They would most likely just use me to boost their performance metrics.I turned off my phone and went back to putting on my pajamas. Just as I was about to order takeout, my phone rang. It was the delivery person. “Miss, could you come down and pick up your package? It’s here!”“Just leave it at the parcel station!”“The parcel station isn’t open today!”I furrowed my brow. “Didn’t you say the parcel station was closed once before? By the way, why does everyone seem to want me to come out today?”“What?” The delivery person seemed taken aback. “This is my first time delivering in this area today!”“Am I going to order takeout later, only for the delivery person to say they can’t find my place?” I stared at the phone while frowning. The delivery person was shocked. “Miss, are you okay? If the food delivery person can’t find your place, why are you telling me this?”“S-sorry!” I

“Do you like me?” I looked at the doctor and asked, enunciating each word clearly. The doctor’s gaze froze. It took him quite a while to snap out of it. “What? O-Of course. You’re cheerful and outgoing. Everyone likes you!”“That’s exactly the problem!” I looked at him, my tone suddenly becoming agitated. “No one hates me! No one here hates me!“Look, I’m a celebrity, yet I don’t have a single hater. Is that even possible? Impossible. It’s all too perfect. The whole world is just going along with me!”The doctor paused. He looked at me with utter confusion. “Maybe I should admit you to the hospital first?”“I’m not sick!” I looked at him. “You’re the ones who are sick.”“What’s wrong with me?” The doctor looked at me as his brow furrowed. He looked like he was dealing with a difficult patient.I stared at him and said, enunciating each word clearly, “You don’t realize you’re sick. That’s the biggest illness of all.“My career is going great, my parents dote on me and love me, a

When I woke up the next morning, I took in the villa’s interiors. Then, I reached out to grab the milk on the table, got up, and started walking downstairs. It was not until I called out Mrs. Smith’s name as she approached that I finally realized something was wrong.“Miss, what’s wrong?” Mrs. Smith looked at me with a curious expression.I looked at the glass of milk in my hand, and my fingers began to tremble again. Why did I recognize her? Why did I instinctively call out Mrs. Smith’s name?I was not supposed to know her name.As for the glass of milk in my hand, why did I pick it up out of habit? Why did I know it was there? It was as if it were muscle memory built up over many years.Seeing my gaze fixed on the milk, Mrs. Smith explained. “Drinking milk when you wake up has been your habit for so many years. It was just flown in this morning. Doesn’t it taste right?”I stared at the milk. Why had I not noticed anything was wrong when I first woke up? Instead, I had adapted
