Chapter 1

"Hear me out, Melanie—" my husband, Cyrus Parker, pleaded, stepping forward to shield his son, Caleb Parker, behind him. That instinctive gesture pierced my heart like a blade.

"This is not the place to talk," I cut him off, picking up my bag. "Let that woman come and collect her son. Then we'll talk."

"Paige isn't feeling well—"

I stared coldly at him. "Cyrus, do you want me to call Grandpa right now, or should I have the lawyer send you the papers directly?"

Cyrus fell silent. The agreement I held was enough to strip him of his position as CEO of Parker Corporation and leave him with nothing.

Just then, Caleb peeked out from behind Cyrus and shouted at me, "Don't bully my daddy, you evil woman!"

A child's words carried no malice, yet they cut deeper than any blade.

Cyrus hurriedly clamped a hand over Caleb's mouth, his eyes wide with fear as he looked at me.

"Such fine parenting," I remarked with a bitter twist of my lips. "It seems the only skill Paige has honed over the years is sowing discord."

With that, I turned and walked out of the police station.

Outside, the snow was falling heavily, the cold biting through to the bone.

My mind drifted back to five years ago, when Paige Gallagher had shown up at my door, heavily pregnant.

Cyrus had dropped to his knees before me, his eyes bloodshot, pleading that the Parker bloodline was thin and begging me to spare the child. At the time, I had just suffered a miscarriage and was at my weakest.

I had signed an agreement under two conditions. The first was that Paige and the child would leave the country and never return, and the second was that 50% of the shares in Parker Corporation would be transferred to me if they came back.

Cyrus' grandfather, Geoffrey Parker, had been so furious that he nearly beat Cyrus to death with his cane. But in the end, he had silently acquiesced, if only to appease me.

Cyrus had sworn to me then, "Melanie, I messed up, but you're the only one I love. You can take all my money, or even take my life. All I ask is that you let her have this child. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

And for five years, he had indeed kept his word. No matter how busy he was, he never missed our daily video calls, and gifts arrived without fail on every occasion. He had even canceled billion-dollar contracts just to spend weekends with me.

I had almost believed that time could truly heal all wounds.

When the snow outside stopped, Cyrus had the driver take Caleb home first. But Cyrus himself didn't dare to leave, nor did he dare let me leave. So, we sat in the cafe next to the police station.

"Melanie, it's not what you think," Cyrus said, his hands pressed to his forehead, voice low.

"Paige… She did actually go abroad. But she couldn't cope there. Caleb has asthma and a heart condition, and the medical costs overseas were simply too high. She just couldn't manage alone."

"And so you brought them back?" I countered, stirring my coffee slowly. "And not only that, you settled them in a luxury apartment under Parker Corp. and visited once a week. Cyrus, is this charity, or are you keeping a second family out there?"

"I was only there to visit Caleb!" he insisted desperately.

"Melanie, he's innocent. Every time Caleb has an attack, he cries for me. What was I supposed to do? I couldn't just watch him die, could I?"

"But you can let me live like a fool, keeping me completely in the dark. Is that it?" I shot back. "Cyrus, did you think that as long as they never showed up in front of me, it wouldn't be considered a breach of contract? And what was your promise back then even worth, then?"

Cyrus flipped through the paternity test report with trembling hands."The alleged father is excluded as the biological father.""This… This can't be…"Cyrus collapsed to his knees. He gripped the report so tightly that the veins on his hand bulged. "What is the meaning of this, Paige? Didn't you say Caleb's my son?"Paige crumpled to the floor, her face a mask of ashen terror.Caleb cried and shouted, "Mommy, I want my real daddy! I don't want to stay with this scary man!"Seated in my wheelchair, I was stunned by the revelation. I never expected my relationship with the Parkers to sour over a bastard child.Cyrus lunged forward and grabbed Paige by the neck, his eyes bloodshot. "You lying witch! You killed my child! You're the one who put me in such a predicament!"Geoffrey simply watched with icy detachment. Only when Cyrus was on the verge of strangling the life out of Paige did he gesture for the bodyguards to pull them apart. "Get this woman and her bastard out of my sigh

Cyrus' expression immediately changed. "Paige didn't do it on purpose! You can't make such a rash decision! If we divorce, then I... What about Parker Corp.?"Paige clutched at Cyrus' arm and cried even harder. "Ms. Lightwood, I know you hate me. If you'll just forgive Cyrus and not divorce, I'll take Caleb and leave right now. We'll never come back."Watching the scene in front of me, I suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of absurdity. The murderer was pretending to be pitiful, the victim was painted as the aggressor, and all Cyrus cared about was to protect what he deemed as the bigger picture."Since you cannot reach an agreement, we will settle this in court."Geoffrey's voice cut through the air as he descended the stairs, leaning heavily on his cane. His expression was thunderous. Behind him followed the butler, Pete Heffer, and several bodyguards clad in black. The room fell silent instantly, save for Paige's muffled weeping. Then, Cyrus went to help Geoffrey. "Grandpa, pl

When I woke again, I had been transferred from the ICU to a regular ward. That hollow, ripped-apart feeling in my abdomen told me everything I needed to know, even without reaching a hand to check.Cyrus sat by the bed, his eyes bloodshot. When he saw me open my eyes, he hurried over in panic. "Mel, you're awake! Here, have some water."I turned my head away. "I've lost the child, haven't I?"His hand froze in mid-air, his eyes reddening further. He set the cup down and buried his face in his hands. "I'm so sorry, Mel... We... We just weren't meant to have this child."I turned back to face him, my gaze locking onto his. "Cyrus, it was Paige. She pushed me."Cyrus jerked, and he looked up at me, his eyes a turmoil of conflict."Paige said… She said that you two were in an argument. When you tried to shove her away, you lost your footing and fell. She tried to grab you, but she couldn't hold on. In fact, you even scratched up the back of her hand badly."She's fainted from cryin

Moments after Geoffrey left, Cyrus, Paige, and Caleb entered the room again. All of a sudden, Caleb hurled the toy car he had been hiding straight at my stomach. "You're an evil woman, and the child you're carrying is bad too!"A sharp pain shot through my abdomen, but I made no sound. I merely stared coldly at the family before me.Cyrus instinctively stepped in front of Caleb. "He's just a child, he doesn't know any better. Don't take it to heart."I smiled bitterly—a chip off the old block. Caleb was truly Paige's son.Suddenly, he began struggling for breath. His heart condition was acting up again. Cyrus and Paige frantically called for doctors, who quickly arranged a hospital room for him.He was admitted to the ICU that very night. Cyrus never once left his side.Early the next morning, seizing a moment when Cyrus had been called away by Caleb's attending physician, I left my room alone.I had already scheduled for a procedure at another private hospital. I didn't want

Cyrus froze where he stood, cold sweat trickling down his back. He hesitated, unable to make a choice.Paige had appeared at the doorway at some point, holding Caleb's hand, unshed tears shimmering on her lashes. "Cyrus, please don't fight with Ms. Lightwood over me."She let go of Caleb's hand and said, "Ms. Lightwood, I know you hate me. I don't mind dying if it means you'll keep your baby!"After saying that, she pretended to rush toward the window.Cyrus was terrified out of his wits. Without thinking, he lunged forward and wrapped his arms around her. "Paige! Have you gone mad? It's more than ten stories high here!""Let me die! I don't want to put you in such a position, and I never wanted to be the one who tore a family apart..." Paige sobbed pitifully in his arms, and Caleb also began to wail loudly. The hospital room descended into chaos. Then, Geoffrey appeared at the doorway, his voice quiet but carrying immense authority. "Have you all made enough of a scene?"Cyr

Paige was right. I once had a child too, though I hadn't been able to carry it to term. However, I couldn't bring myself to sympathize with Paige. At the end of the day, she was still the third party who had intruded into my relationship with Cyrus. "Melanie, Caleb's surgery is scheduled for next week," Cyrus said before clenching his jaw. "But the surgery and the follow-up treatments will cost a fortune. The company's liquid funds are all tied up in your new project..."I looked up at him. "So?"Cyrus avoided my gaze. "I want to temporarily put your project on hold and reallocate the funds for Caleb's treatment. This is a matter of life and death."That project was one I had poured my heart into. I'd spent three months burning the midnight oil to secure a new market for Parker Corp.I trembled with rage."Cyrus, do you have any idea what suspending that project means? It means tens of millions in initial investment going down the drain!""I can always earn more money, but I
