Chapter 1

Author: Local Universe
After putting my son, Jonathan Lane, to bed, I, Jasper Lane, returned to the guest room. I opened my laptop and started drafting the divorce agreement.

This year marked the seventh year of my marriage to Zoey Sutton. It was also the seventh year we had been living apart.

I was finally ready to let her go.

Jonathan knocked on my door and walked in. My seven-year-old son was holding his airplane model as he asked, "Daddy, are we really moving?"

He looked at me, clearly reluctant to leave. "But Ms. Sutton hugged me tonight. Doesn't that mean she's starting to like me?"

I froze, momentarily disoriented.

Seven years of marriage, yet Zoey had never let Jonathan call her "Mommy".

When he was two, she had taken him grocery shopping. On the way, they had run into an acquaintance.

Because Jonathan had accidentally called her "Mommy", Zoey put him down and made the barely walking toddler go on by himself. By the time they got back, his knees and palms had been scraped raw.

When he was four, he had begged for weeks to go to the amusement park. That day, another careless "Mommy" slipped out.

Zoey had let go of his hand, letting him get lost in the crowd. By the time we found him, he had been hiding in the bushes, crying so hard he could barely breathe.

From then on, he learned to call her "Ms. Sutton", and our family became nothing more than a joke.

My nose stung at the memory, and I pulled Jonathan into my arms.

"Jon," I said quietly, "someone she loves is coming back. We can't stay in this house anymore."

His gaze dimmed, and then he quickly held out his airplane to me. "But Daddy, Ms. Sutton gave me a gift tonight. If she didn't like me, why would she do that?"

He looked desperate, as if he were trying to prove that his mother loved him.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

How could I explain it to him? What was I supposed to say? Should I tell him that Zoey was happy because her first love was returning? Or that the gift hadn't truly been her idea?

I couldn't say any of that.

I swallowed the bitterness in my heart, hiding it as I always did, and chose to protect Jonathan with a polished truth. I kissed his forehead and wiped my tears where he couldn't see.

It was a facade a father would uphold, even at the height of his pain.

Forcing a smile, I asked, "Jon, if I want to take you away from Ms. Sutton, would you come with me?"

He stiffened, then whispered, "Can't we stay? I haven't even been allowed to call her 'Mommy' yet…"

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I struggled to keep them from falling.

"Jon, she doesn't want us to stay in her house. Will you let me take you?"

Jonathan hugged his airplane tightly. He remained silent for a long time before speaking.

Steve frowned at Zoey and replied with a sneer, "No! Maybe he was too embarrassed to come to school!"Sean had just arrived and saw the two of them facing off. His unease deepened.Yesterday, as soon as he got home, he received two documents—one was a termination notice, the other a letter from a lawyer. He had thought he had successfully won Zoey back, but he hadn't realized that her heart had already belonged to Jonathan and me. She simply wouldn't acknowledge it.When the principal learned Zoey's identity, his surprise quickly turned into contempt."In all my years, I've never seen anyone so eager to play mother to another child," he said harshly. He didn't hold back. "At every parent-teacher meeting, the other kids teased Jon for not having a mother. I honestly thought his mother had passed away. "Jon's father has already withdrawn him from school. Aside from the awards he didn't pick up, I have no record of him here anymore."Zoey held a thick stack of awards at the schoo

Sean chased after Zoey. He held Steve and shouted at Zoey, "Zoey! Take your anger out on me! Steve is just a child!"In Zoey's mind, my voice echoed again and again.I once said to her, "Zoey, you can misunderstand me all you want, but Jon is just a child. He's innocent. Can you show him even a little motherly affection?"She thought of me, the proud man. Misunderstood or ignored, I never gave in. Jonathan was the only reason I would ever yield.Fuming, Zoey called the security guards and had them escorted out. Then she started frantically calling the office, trying to reach the HR director, Susan Brown. Her anger was boiling over."Hello?" she snapped when the call finally connected. The line was noisy, but Zoey could hear Susan calming a child in a gentle tone. "Sweetheart, I have work to do, but I'll come help build the blocks soon, okay?"A child answered softly, "Okay! Hurry, or the monster will take over your room!"Susan chuckled softly in response, then moved to a quiet

Hearing the hostility in Zoey's tone, Sean said awkwardly, "Steve knows he caused serious trouble. He insisted on coming to apologize in person. I also have some work matters I wanted to ask Mr. Lane about. After all, he used to…"Zoey looked at the father and son. Their eyes were clearly red from crying. She also noticed the neighbors watching.Reluctantly, she stepped aside and let them in.Steve immediately spotted the KFC on the table. He reached for it, but Sean shot him a sharp look.Startled, Steve pulled his hand back. He then lowered his head and spoke in an aggrieved tone. "I was wrong, future Mommy. I shouldn't have drawn on your documents…"Seeing his expression, Zoey softened for a moment. Jonathan often looked at her with the same look in his eyes. She felt a pang of unease at the thought of Jonathan. So much time had passed, yet Jonathan and I were still not home. She ignored Sean and Steve, grabbed her phone, and went into the kitchen. She tried calling me, only

Zoey rubbed her temples, trying to push away the absurd thought in her head. But Jonathan's face rose unbidden in her mind. She might not have loved me, but she shouldn't have taken it out on our child. With that in mind, Zoey took out her phone and typed quickly, "Pack up. I'm taking you guys out tonight."Sensing how cold it sounded, she frowned and re-typed, "Let's take Jon out for KFC tonight."She read it twice. Then she took a deep breath and hit send. The afternoon passed, but her message received no response.Zoey picked up her phone again and again, only to set it down in disappointment.Sean brought over a cup of coffee and set it on her desk. He said softly, "Zoey…"Zoey stared at the blank screen, not bothering to look up. A trace of irritation crept into her voice without her noticing. "Leave it and go out. And from now on, call me Ms. Sutton at the office. Even if I put you in this position, you need to be discreet."Sean's eyes reddened, making him look pitiful.

The client said nothing, weighing the damage to his ego.Sean suddenly broke down crying. His pitiful display made everyone frown, and whatever goodwill they had left quickly disappeared. In the workplace, looks were only a bonus. These seasoned professionals cared most about one's competence.I was decent-looking and far more capable than Sean. No one understood what Zoey was thinking. She had actually traded me for a useless ornament. After everyone left, Sean looked at Zoey. "Zoey, I'm sorry. I didn't expect this to happen. What should I do?"Zoey instinctively wanted to comfort him. But when she met his helpless gaze, she froze.I had never looked at her like that. I was prideful, and I pursued perfection in everything I did. No matter how difficult the task or how tricky the situation, I always resolved it.Unlike Sean, I never cried or dumped the mess on her to deal with. She thought that if I had been in Sean's place today, none of this would have happened. Jonathan was

My finger hovered over the power button, but I couldn't bring myself to press it.Jonathan noticed my hesitation. He glanced at the screen, and tears welled up in his eyes. He then tugged at my sleeve and lowered his head."Daddy, we're taking off soon," he reminded, his voice barely a whisper.I gently ruffled his hair. My heart ached at how suddenly he had matured.…Back at the office, Zoey stared at the screen as the alert showed that my phone had been turned off, and she frowned. She had rushed over in a panic the night before, only to find that Steve had merely been hungry. He had thrown a tantrum for KFC.She thought of Jonathan, whom she had abandoned, and guilt crept into her heart.Zoey saw how much Steve enjoyed the meal yesterday. She thought that if she took Jonathan to KFC today, he would probably be thrilled as well."Zoey…"Sean's voice pulled her out of her thoughts.Zoey looked at Sean in his thin black V-neck shirt and frowned slightly. She knew he had exc
