Chapter 5

Author: Tcee Eke
Audrey’s POV

I glanced at Jared and Selena one last time before turning to leave.

The nineteen-year-old Jared was gone.

With him gone, there was no reason for me to remain tangled up with the twenty-seven-year-old Jared.

But I had barely taken two steps when his voice stopped me.

“Audrey, don’t… don’t go.”

I paused.

Perhaps it was the desperation in his voice—the same voice that had once meant everything to me—that made me stop and listen.

When Jared saw me stop, relief flashed across his face.

Audrey’s POVI laughed until my voice broke.“Jared, do you know what I told myself when I heard those words?”He stared at me, his eyes filled with desperate hope.“What?”I looked at him.“I told myself I never regretted meeting you.”His breath caught.“And I was even willing to give you one last chance.”For a moment, relief flashed across his face. But I continued.“That chance is gone.”His expression collapsed.“You chose Selena again and again. Even when she hurt me. Even when I was standing right in front of you.”I looked away.“I waited for you to remember who we were. I waited for you to choose me.”My voice became quieter.“But you never did.”“Audrey, please—”“Leave.”He froze.“I don’t want to see you again.”He stood there for a long time before finally lowering his head and walking out. That was the last time I saw Jared.—The miniature camera I had been wearing during my captivity had recorded everything. The footage showed Selena’s confession. Her threats.Everythi

Audrey’s POVI fought to stay conscious. Every second I remained alive was another second of rescue. The knife came down again. And again.Pain tore through my arm until broken screams escaped my throat.Selena kept demanding that I beg her for mercy.I refused. My arm gradually went numb.My vision blurred.I could barely keep my eyes open. Then Selena suddenly threw the knife aside.“Enough.”She looked bored.“I’m tired of this. Just kill her.”My heart stopped. She turned toward the men behind her.“Take care of her.”They stepped forward.I closed my eyes. Then—Crash! The cabin door exploded inward.Gunshots erupted through the room. The men surrounding me barely had time to react before Jared’s men stormed inside, weapons raised.Everything happened in seconds. The men holding me were thrown to the ground.Selena tried to run.One of Jared’s men caught her before she reached the door.“Let me go!”She struggled violently. Then another voice cut through the chaos.“Get your hand

Audrey’s POV“Selena… where are we?”I forced my voice to remain steady. There was no point provoking her.She laughed sharply. “Audrey, you’re supposed to be clever. Can’t you figure it out?”Of course I could but keeping her talking was my only chance. Before I could say anything, one of the men beside her spoke.“Boss, we should kill her now. The ski resort already reported someone missing.”His words immediately enraged Selena.“Shut up!”She slapped me hard across the face.“Do you think anyone cares if one woman disappears in the middle of the mountains?”She grabbed my hair and yanked my head back.“Audrey, do you have any idea how much I sacrificed to get Jared?”Her voice rose.“I stayed by his side. I listened to his problems. I took care of everything he needed. I became whatever he wanted me to be!”Her eyes were wild.“And after all that, he still chose you because he saw your pitiful expression at the beach!”She laughed bitterly.“But it doesn’t matter anymore.”She lean

Audrey’s POVJared’s head was still spinning from the alcohol. At last, he gave up on the keypad and began pounding on the estate door.“Audrey, open up! I’m back!”He struck the door again.“Audrey, I know you’re inside.”“I’m sorry. Please, just open the door.”His voice grew more frustrated.“Audrey, what more do you want? I’ve already apologized!”The longer he waited, the angrier he became.Eventually, he pulled out his phone and searched through our old messages. After a moment, he found the message where I had once sent him the security code.He entered it.The lock still refused to open. That was when he finally understood.I had changed the password.Panic replaced his anger. He immediately called me.“The number you have dialed is currently switched off.”He called again. And again.Still nothing. Finally, in desperation, Jared smashed one of the windows and climbed inside.“Audrey, you’ve gone too far!”He stormed upstairs and threw open the bedroom door.It was empty. Then

Audrey’s POVThe nineteen-year-old Jared wiped another tear from his cheek.“So tomorrow night… he’ll regret everything.”I didn’t know whether he was trying to convince himself or me.Neither of us expected the twenty-seven-year-old Jared to actually appear at the beach. But he did.He hadn’t come to keep the promise he’d made to me.He had come for Selena. The beach where Jared had promised to propose to me was now covered in red roses.Black SUVs lined the road behind them, and armed Lockwood men stood at a distance while fireworks had been arranged along the shoreline. At the center of it all stood Jared and Selena, holding hands. The moment he saw me, his expression hardened.“Audrey, you actually followed me here?” His voice was cold. “Are you spying on me now? How pathetic.”Selena remained beside him, her fingers intertwined with his.I looked at the man standing before me.Then I quietly said, “Your three chances are over, Jared.”The nineteen-year-old Jared immediately clutch
