Chapter 2

Penulis: Vera Sterling
I stared at Madeline.

"Why would you do this to me? Wasn't everything I gave you enough?

"Every test you came up with, no matter how far it went, I played along. I did everything I could to make you feel safe.

"You spent five years testing whether I'd leave you, Madeline. And now you're the one leaving, straight into another man's arms."

She watched me hurt, and something like satisfaction crossed her face.

"Caleb, you can't force love.

"I never made you take those tests. You threw yourself at them. How is any of that my fault?"

My chest closed up. I was shaking.

"Then what was the marriage license, Madeline? What is this wedding?"

She leaned back against Trent, and he ran a hand down her hip.

"It's a piece of paper," she said. "Getting married doesn't mean you can't get divorced.

"You always said you wanted me happy. Being with Trent is what makes me happy. Are you willing to give me that?"

Mom couldn't take any more. She went down.

My breath stopped. I got to her and called an ambulance.

Madeline was smiling like she'd enjoyed it. I was the one crying.

Before they carried Mom out, I said one last thing.

"If this is what you want, Madeline, then you can have it."

She smiled and nodded. Trent pulled her against him and kissed her.

I held Mom's hand while it went cold, and the tears kept coming.

The wedding I'd spent months planning ended in sirens and wreckage.

They took Mom into the emergency room. Dad and I waited outside the doors.

Ten hours, and still no word. I couldn't hold it in any longer. I crouched in a corner of the hallway and broke down.

Dad put a hand on my shoulder. "Caleb, none of this is on you. Don't do that to yourself.

"Anyone this happened to would be in pieces.

"Your mother is going to be fine. I know it."

Somewhere in that night, still sitting outside the emergency room, I got a message from Madeline.

Congratulations, puppy. You passed the final test. Your prize is being Madeline Hart's husband.

I laughed at the screen, and I blocked every notification from her.

At dawn, the doctor finally came out.

"She's out of danger. But she needs rest, and she absolutely cannot go through another shock like that."

I let out a long breath. For the next few days I did nothing but look after her.

When Madeline got no reply, she started flooding my phone.

Hint: if you come chase me right now, I might lower myself and do the wedding over.

Caleb, why aren't you answering? Ignore me again and I'm marking the test failed.

Keep this up and I'll marry Trent for real. You can get on your knees afterward and I won't turn around.

From the moment she walked into our wedding holding his hand, we were finished.

I wrote back.

Madeline. Three days from now, the county courthouse. We're filing for divorce.

Mom was laughing at the table. "If I'd known, I'd have made Caleb do more sports as a boy. Then people wouldn't be able to push him around like this."Jordan spoke up fast. "Everybody's good at something different. I think Caleb's fine the way he is."My parents heard that, and both of them suddenly reached for their phones and pretended to take a call."Something at the university? Right. We'll be there.""Sorry about this, Jordan. You two take your time. Make yourself at home."Once they were gone, Jordan moved a couple of dishes over in front of me."Eat something, Caleb."My ears were burning. "Thanks, Jordan. You've been getting me out of trouble since we were kids."She looked at me. "Caleb, do men actually like the Madeline type?"The soft, breakable kind, with a bit of a temper."I shook my head. "I misjudged her, that's all. She wasn't worth it."You're fine exactly as you are. You stand up for people and you've got real steel in you. Anybody you fall for is lucky."

"Trent makes me sick. He isn't worth a single hair on your head."Trent had come up the path behind her and heard it. He crossed the last of the distance and hit her across the face."What did you just say, you little tramp?"You're the one who climbed into my bed. You're the one who said Caleb was too straitlaced to be any fun."Then he looked at me and grinned."You remember the first time we met, Caleb? You threw a punch at me and called me trash. Said I had no business breathing the same air as anybody."Look how far that got you. I still ended up with your wife."Madeline grabbed his sleeve. "Trent, shut up."Then she turned those pleading eyes on me. "Caleb, don't believe him. None of it's true."I watched the two of them and felt nothing. Whatever I'd had for her had died a long time ago. True or not, it made no difference to me now.Trent started laughing."Here's the good part, Caleb. I had her in the first month you two were dating."Those three hundred tests? Mos

She slipped out while Trent was asleep and came to my house. There was nothing left of the woman from the wedding. Her eyes were flat and she looked like she hadn't washed in days. She knocked and cried at the same time."Caleb, I know I was wrong. I never should have tested you."Please forgive me. I don't want the divorce."You love me so much. You'll forgive me, won't you?"Jordan got to the door before I did and looked her over."Where do you find the nerve to come here? You didn't do enough damage at the wedding?"Madeline saw Jordan coming out of my house, and her eyes went red."What are you to Caleb? Why are you in his house?"She pointed in Jordan's face."You bitch. And you said you weren't after him."He and I are still married. That makes you a homewrecker. I'll take this to your commanding officer."I came out and put myself in front of Jordan."Jordan has been my friend since we were children. You don't get to say a word about her."You and I are getting di

I looked down, embarrassed. "She was my first love. I wanted to do right by it."It took me until now to see she wasn't worth it.""That's her problem, not yours," Jordan said. "She doesn't know how to be in a relationship."Don't beat yourself up. Finding out is a good thing, even late."I smiled. "I stopped hurting a while ago. After what she did, she isn't worth another thought."For the next few days my parents had Jordan over for dinner every night. She opened her phone one evening and made a sound. "Caleb. Is this your wedding?"I came over to look, and the whole day came back at once. My hand closed on the edge of the table."Yeah. The day before, Madeline told me there'd be a test. I thought she was joking."She actually brought a man with her."The worst part is he's the same man who was on her in that bar the first time."Jordan's fists closed. "She's out of her mind. A woman like that doesn't deserve you."I laughed, and it came out bitter. "She always said she g

"Everybody move. If somebody dies out here, which one of you is going to answer for it?"The word died stopped them. A path opened up.I looked at her, grateful and stunned at once. "Jordan? What are you doing here?"Jordan Hayes grew up next door to me. She was a scrapper from the time she could walk, and she went into the Army and made lieutenant colonel younger than anyone had a right to.When I was a kid and boys picked on me for having a pretty face, Jordan was the one who came out swinging at all of them at once. And here she was again, at exactly the right moment."I'm home on leave," she said. "I saw your dad standing out front."Dad hurried over. "I was waiting outside. Nobody came out, so I came in looking for you."With the crowd off her, Mom's breathing started to settle. "I'm all right. It was just too many people."Jordan took her hand. "We're getting you looked at anyway, ma'am. I'd feel better."We turned to go, and Madeline stepped in front of us. She pointed

Silence on the other end. I'd known the answer for days, and it still landed like a dull blow.I wanted it finished cleanly, so I said it plainly."Madeline, I'm not sulking, and I don't care about your cheap little tests anymore."I am divorcing you. You love Trent so much? Then have him. Both of you."Her embarrassment turned into fury."You just wait, Caleb. I'm going to make you throw another wedding, a big one, and take me back in front of everybody."You will marry me."I knew she'd make a scene. I didn't think she'd make it at Ashford, the university where Mom and I both worked. She'd decided my mother had turned me against her, and it apparently never crossed her mind that she'd done anything wrong.Classes had just let out. Madeline knelt in the rain in the middle of the quad, and every student and faculty member crossing it stopped to look."Eleanor, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong."I'm not trying to take Caleb from you. Please, don't make him divorce me."We've be
