Chapter 3

Penulis: Vera Sterling
After I sent it, I blocked her number.

Three days later I showed up at the county courthouse with the divorce papers.

Madeline had been there since early morning, pacing outside the doors. When she saw me, relief flashed across her face and was gone, replaced by temper.

"Caleb, why didn't you answer me? Are you trying to fail on purpose?"

By then I didn't care about the tests at all. I didn't want to play anymore. Whatever I'd felt for her had gone rotten in a single afternoon.

My silence made her worse.

"You're not actually angry, are you?

"Your mother didn't die. She fainted. Is this really necessary?

"Honestly, I think she faked it. She wanted to put her future daughter-in-law in her place, before I could take over as the woman of the house."

The word died was the end of my patience.

"Don't. If anything happens to my mother because of you, I will take you to court over it, and I will mean it."

Madeline stared at me. "You just raised your voice at me?

"I'm not even living under your roof yet and that old woman is already turning you against me."

I walked past her and straight to the filing window.

The clerk looked at our dates and frowned. "You were married a week ago. And you're filing already?"

Madeline's whole face changed. She went small and pitiful.

"His mother won't leave our marriage alone, and he takes her side every time. I don't want a divorce. He dragged me here."

The clerk gave me a look of plain disapproval.

"Mr. Morgan, you can be as close to your mother as you like, but you can't let her run your marriage."

She closed the register.

"Here's what we'll do. Take thirty days to cool off. If you still want this at the end of it, come back."

I wanted to tell her not to bother, that we could do it right now. But she waved me off and called the next couple forward.

Trent was waiting outside when we came out. He got an arm around Madeline.

"I handled the wedding night for you too. Not bad at all.

"I'll tell you what, sleeping with another man's wife really is something else."

Madeline looked at me, pleased with herself. "I'll give you one more chance to win me back, Caleb.

"Otherwise, when I actually marry Trent, you'll be the one crying."

What made her think I'd still take her? She was filthy. Looking at her turned my stomach.

"No need," I said. "Go marry him."

She went still for a second, then scoffed.

"What's this, playing hard to get?

"Let's see how long the tough act lasts."

I shook my head, done wasting words on her, and left.

Mom was much better by the time I got home. She looked up at me, worried.

"Caleb, you and Madeline —"

"Mom, I'm sorry. This is my fault. You almost —"

She took my hand. "Don't. It isn't your fault. If I blame anyone it's myself, for raising you so gentle that people like her think it's an invitation."

I told her Madeline probably wasn't finished, and asked her to stay calm no matter what happened.

Over the next few days, Madeline called and called. I blocked her, and she came back from an unknown number.

"Caleb, you're taking this way too far.

"It was one test. Is this reaction really necessary? You blocked me?"

She still thought I was only angry.

I smiled at that, and asked her the only thing I still needed to hear from her.

"Madeline. Did you sleep with Trent?"

Mom was laughing at the table. "If I'd known, I'd have made Caleb do more sports as a boy. Then people wouldn't be able to push him around like this."Jordan spoke up fast. "Everybody's good at something different. I think Caleb's fine the way he is."My parents heard that, and both of them suddenly reached for their phones and pretended to take a call."Something at the university? Right. We'll be there.""Sorry about this, Jordan. You two take your time. Make yourself at home."Once they were gone, Jordan moved a couple of dishes over in front of me."Eat something, Caleb."My ears were burning. "Thanks, Jordan. You've been getting me out of trouble since we were kids."She looked at me. "Caleb, do men actually like the Madeline type?"The soft, breakable kind, with a bit of a temper."I shook my head. "I misjudged her, that's all. She wasn't worth it."You're fine exactly as you are. You stand up for people and you've got real steel in you. Anybody you fall for is lucky."

"Trent makes me sick. He isn't worth a single hair on your head."Trent had come up the path behind her and heard it. He crossed the last of the distance and hit her across the face."What did you just say, you little tramp?"You're the one who climbed into my bed. You're the one who said Caleb was too straitlaced to be any fun."Then he looked at me and grinned."You remember the first time we met, Caleb? You threw a punch at me and called me trash. Said I had no business breathing the same air as anybody."Look how far that got you. I still ended up with your wife."Madeline grabbed his sleeve. "Trent, shut up."Then she turned those pleading eyes on me. "Caleb, don't believe him. None of it's true."I watched the two of them and felt nothing. Whatever I'd had for her had died a long time ago. True or not, it made no difference to me now.Trent started laughing."Here's the good part, Caleb. I had her in the first month you two were dating."Those three hundred tests? Mos

She slipped out while Trent was asleep and came to my house. There was nothing left of the woman from the wedding. Her eyes were flat and she looked like she hadn't washed in days. She knocked and cried at the same time."Caleb, I know I was wrong. I never should have tested you."Please forgive me. I don't want the divorce."You love me so much. You'll forgive me, won't you?"Jordan got to the door before I did and looked her over."Where do you find the nerve to come here? You didn't do enough damage at the wedding?"Madeline saw Jordan coming out of my house, and her eyes went red."What are you to Caleb? Why are you in his house?"She pointed in Jordan's face."You bitch. And you said you weren't after him."He and I are still married. That makes you a homewrecker. I'll take this to your commanding officer."I came out and put myself in front of Jordan."Jordan has been my friend since we were children. You don't get to say a word about her."You and I are getting di

I looked down, embarrassed. "She was my first love. I wanted to do right by it."It took me until now to see she wasn't worth it.""That's her problem, not yours," Jordan said. "She doesn't know how to be in a relationship."Don't beat yourself up. Finding out is a good thing, even late."I smiled. "I stopped hurting a while ago. After what she did, she isn't worth another thought."For the next few days my parents had Jordan over for dinner every night. She opened her phone one evening and made a sound. "Caleb. Is this your wedding?"I came over to look, and the whole day came back at once. My hand closed on the edge of the table."Yeah. The day before, Madeline told me there'd be a test. I thought she was joking."She actually brought a man with her."The worst part is he's the same man who was on her in that bar the first time."Jordan's fists closed. "She's out of her mind. A woman like that doesn't deserve you."I laughed, and it came out bitter. "She always said she g

"Everybody move. If somebody dies out here, which one of you is going to answer for it?"The word died stopped them. A path opened up.I looked at her, grateful and stunned at once. "Jordan? What are you doing here?"Jordan Hayes grew up next door to me. She was a scrapper from the time she could walk, and she went into the Army and made lieutenant colonel younger than anyone had a right to.When I was a kid and boys picked on me for having a pretty face, Jordan was the one who came out swinging at all of them at once. And here she was again, at exactly the right moment."I'm home on leave," she said. "I saw your dad standing out front."Dad hurried over. "I was waiting outside. Nobody came out, so I came in looking for you."With the crowd off her, Mom's breathing started to settle. "I'm all right. It was just too many people."Jordan took her hand. "We're getting you looked at anyway, ma'am. I'd feel better."We turned to go, and Madeline stepped in front of us. She pointed

Silence on the other end. I'd known the answer for days, and it still landed like a dull blow.I wanted it finished cleanly, so I said it plainly."Madeline, I'm not sulking, and I don't care about your cheap little tests anymore."I am divorcing you. You love Trent so much? Then have him. Both of you."Her embarrassment turned into fury."You just wait, Caleb. I'm going to make you throw another wedding, a big one, and take me back in front of everybody."You will marry me."I knew she'd make a scene. I didn't think she'd make it at Ashford, the university where Mom and I both worked. She'd decided my mother had turned me against her, and it apparently never crossed her mind that she'd done anything wrong.Classes had just let out. Madeline knelt in the rain in the middle of the quad, and every student and faculty member crossing it stopped to look."Eleanor, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong."I'm not trying to take Caleb from you. Please, don't make him divorce me."We've be
