Chapter 3

Author: Narrow Escape
I explained, “I’m not Jenna. I’m her sister, Summer Sinclair.”

The butler took a moment to process that. Then he nodded in understanding and turned back to Silas.

“Sir, the police called. They said something happened to Mrs. Pembroke. They tried calling you for three straight days, but you never answered.

“With no other option, they contacted other family members and eventually found Mrs. Pembroke’s sister. She was the one who later claimed the body.

“But they still needed to notify you as her husband, so the call came through to me.”

“What did you just say…?”

Silas stared at him blankly. His lips parted, but no more words came out.

“Enough!”

Sienna suddenly dropped the weak, fragile act and stepped in front of Silas.

“So now the two of you are working together to lie to him? Mr. Lane, you’d better remember your place.

“Jenna may have married Silas, but there’s only ever been one real master of this house, and that’s him.”

The butler’s expression darkened. “Miss Vale, this call came from the police. If you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to call back and confirm it yourself.”

Sienna gave a cold snort. “If Jenna set this whole performance up, then obviously she would’ve arranged everything in advance.

“What’s the point of calling now?”

Then she grabbed Silas’s hand and gave it a gentle shake. “Silas, don’t let Jenna fool you again…

“I’m honestly upset today. She’s already your wife. She’s already the lady of this house. What else could she possibly want? Why does she always have to make a scene?

“She has no idea how much I envy her…”

She tilted her face up toward him, eyes shimmering with tears.

Silas raised a hand and gently wiped one from her cheek, his voice thick with tenderness.

“Sienna, you’ve been wronged.

“But don’t worry. This is the last time.”

Then he looked at me, his gaze locking onto my face.

“Jenna, this is the last time.

“I can let everything before this go. But if there’s a next time, I will divorce you.”

I caught the flash of resentment in Sienna’s eyes.

“And you,” Silas said, turning to the butler with a warning in his voice, “don’t forget who signs your paycheck.”

The butler looked at him with a complicated expression. When he spoke again, even his voice sounded strained.

“Sir… why is it that you refuse to believe your wife?

“She’s dead. Dead. You’re still letting Miss Vale poison your mind, calling it an act?”

“Mr. Lane, who is poisoning his mind?” Sienna snapped. “Don’t think I don’t know what this is about. Jenna helped your son with school a couple of times, and now you’re this loyal to her?”

Her eyes widened as if a new thought had just struck her.

“Wait… are you saying you and Jenna had something going on too?”

The butler laughed in disbelief.

Then he ripped the staff badge from his chest and threw it to the floor.

“I quit.

“This house has been turned toxic, and staying here brings nothing but bad luck.”

He paused, then looked back at Silas. His tone softened at last.

“Sir… Master Silas. I’ve watched you grow up, so let me say one last thing before I leave.

“Mrs. Pembroke was a truly good person. But most people in this world just follow whatever they’re shown. They don’t see clearly, and they don’t think thoroughly.

“The way you treated her decided how everyone else treated her too. She suffered in this house.

“But now she’s gone. Don’t you at least want to see her one last time?”

Silas’s face looked terrible.

He frowned and lowered his head slightly, as if something inside him had finally begun to shift.

The butler turned to leave.

I reached out and caught his arm.

Silas looked up instantly, hope flooding his eyes. “What did she say? Tell me.“Did she… did she say she hated me? Or that she wanted something from me?“Whatever it is, if it was her last wish, I’ll do everything I can.”“She said…” I let out a soft laugh. “She said she didn’t hate you.”His eyes lit up at once.“But she doesn’t love you anymore either. My sister wanted to forget you completely. If possible, she wished she had never met you at all.“She also said that fire all those years ago—she never should have risked everything to save you.“All it gave her was that ugly scar on her arm. Nothing else.“She said dying might not be so bad. At least in death, she could finally get away from you and begin again—clean, untouched.“No wounds in her heart. No wounds on her body.”With every word, Silas’s face grew paler. The light in his eyes dimmed little by little until there was nothing left but darkness. But I still wasn’t done.“She said you should have died in that fire.“If you ha

Several police officers came down the hall. They glanced at the paperwork in their hands, then walked straight to Sienna with practiced precision, their voices flat and cold.“Miss Vale, you are under suspicion for arranging a kidnapping and attempted murder. You need to come with us.”They didn’t even give her time to argue before they cuffed her.Sienna started screaming immediately. “What are you doing? Let go of me! I didn’t do anything!”“Didn’t do anything?” One of the officers let out a short, humorless laugh. “The kidnappers already confessed. You paid in cash and made sure there was no transfer record.“But they weren’t nearly as stupid as you thought. They secretly recorded the deal. Their plan was to use it against you afterward and extort even more money.“And once we had their statements, it didn’t take long to discover that during that period, you withdrew large amounts of cash and sold off several designer bags and pieces of jewelry.“You can continue explaining the rest

Silas’s sobbing stopped abruptly, but he still didn’t turn around.I knew why.He was scared now—scared to face whatever my sister had left for him.But I had no intention of making this easy for him. Before I took out the last item, I deliberately added one more thing.“Oh, and one more detail. Based on everything I’ve uncovered, Sienna framed my sister so many times I’ve lost count.“She deliberately cut her own leg, then claimed Jenna tried to run her over.“She threw herself into a fountain, then said Jenna pushed her.“She said Jenna went to her campus on purpose, spread rumors, and even paid people to gang up on her.“I have proof of all of it. If you want to see it, I can show you anytime.”I knew my sister wasn’t incapable of uncovering the truth. She was just too confident.Too confident in what she thought she had with Silas. Too confident in his loyalty. And by the time she realized the truth, it was already too late.In the very beginning, maybe she really had done all the

The second thing she left behind, however, was nothing more than a thin slip of paper.Silas frowned. “What is this?”I answered slowly, “It’s a donation receipt.“You should remember this. Not long ago, Sienna graduated from college.“The minute she graduated, she came crying to you, saying she’d spent four years being looked down on as the poor scholarship kid and had been humiliated enough.“So she decided she wanted to donate money to the school, to erase that image and polish her reputation.”I let out a quiet, mocking breath.“But where was a brand-new graduate supposed to get that kind of money? Then again, after staying close to you for so long, maybe she’d managed to save a decent amount. Still, would she ever willingly spend it?“No. The whole point of that little performance was to get you to pay for it.“You handed the matter to my sister. And Jenna did make the donation.“But Sienna turned around and accused her of pocketing Pembroke money behind your back, claiming Jenna

He stared at me blankly and asked in a daze, “What… what are they?”I reached into my bag and took out a jade bracelet. It was beautiful—fine quality, unmistakably precious. But it had once been shattered and later painstakingly repaired by my sister with gold and other materials.“This is the first thing she left behind,” I said. “Silas’s grandmother put it on my sister’s wrist herself on her wedding day.“To Jenna, it represented your love. It meant the Pembroke family had accepted her. She treasured it more than almost anything.“So tell me, Silas—what made you think she would smash something this important on purpose just to frame Sienna?“Yes, it later became obvious that Sienna wasn’t nearly as innocent as she looked. But back then, who was she?”“She was just a freshman college student the Pembrokes were sponsoring. What exactly made her important enough for someone to ruin a bracelet like this over?”Sienna’s face flushed bright red. “What exactly are you implying? Jenna was je

“The one who should leave isn’t you. And if you do leave, it shouldn’t be because someone forced you out.”I spoke slowly, then reached into my bag and pulled out several documents. My ID. My adoption papers. And… my sister’s death certificate.I held them out in front of Silas. “Take a good look. Then tell me whether I’m Jenna or not.”His expression turned strange. He barely looked at the documents at all. Instead, he stared at me and demanded, almost as if he wanted me to say yes:“You’re still lying to me, aren’t you?“If you’re Jenna’s sister, then why don’t you have the same last name?”I met his eyes calmly and answered in a cold, even tone.“My sister and I were abandoned as babies. Our parents saw they’d had twin girls and dumped us.“When we were six, we were adopted by two different families, one after the other. After that, we lost all contact.”Back then, a separation like that could easily become permanent.I was adopted by the Sinclair family and taken south, to Harbor C
