Chapter 4

Author: Narrow Escape
“The one who should leave isn’t you. And if you do leave, it shouldn’t be because someone forced you out.”

I spoke slowly, then reached into my bag and pulled out several documents.

My ID. My adoption papers. And… my sister’s death certificate.

I held them out in front of Silas. “Take a good look. Then tell me whether I’m Jenna or not.”

His expression turned strange.

He barely looked at the documents at all. Instead, he stared at me and demanded, almost as if he wanted me to say yes:

“You’re still lying to me, aren’t you?

“If you’re Jenna’s sister, then why don’t you have the same last name?”

I met his eyes calmly and answered in a cold, even tone.

“My sister and I were abandoned as babies. Our parents saw they’d had twin girls and dumped us.

“When we were six, we were adopted by two different families, one after the other. After that, we lost all contact.”

Back then, a separation like that could easily become permanent.

I was adopted by the Sinclair family and taken south, to Harbor City.

Later, because of my adoptive parents’ work, I spent years overseas with them.

My sister, meanwhile, was brought to Northbridge.

It wasn’t as if I never tried to find her.

I did.

But every time I got close—every time I found even the slightest lead—it got cut off.

Later, I learned the truth: my sister’s adoptive parents had done it on purpose.

They had their reasons. I couldn’t really blame them. From the bits and pieces I uncovered, I at least knew they had loved her.

But they passed away five years ago.

And I never could have imagined that the thing that would finally lead me to my sister… would be something this brutal.

Silas held the adoption papers in his hand and kept shaking his head, like he was fighting with himself.

“I don’t believe it. If you wanted to fake these, it wouldn’t be hard.

“Just like that photo of you and your sister. That was fake too.”

That photo had been edited. He was right.

When I was fifteen, I took that picture by myself in Australia. A pair of sisters happened to be taking photos nearby.

When I got home, I turned it into one of me and Jenna.

We looked so alike that making a fake like that had been easy.

So I admitted it without hesitation. “Yes. But the original photo was taken when I was in high school in Australia.

“You knew my sister for years. So you should know she was never in Australia.

“Which means the girl in that photo could only have been me—someone who happened to have her exact face.”

Silas’s lips had started to tremble.

He swallowed over and over without seeming to notice he was doing it, his face drained of all color.

“So what?” Sienna shot back, lifting her chin. “At most, that proves Jenna really might have a sister.

“It doesn’t prove anything else. If anything, it proves even more that she’s putting on a show.

“Because if an older sister asked her own twin to help her with an act like this, of course she’d agree.”

It was as if her words gave him something to cling to.

Silas grabbed my shoulders, his voice shaking with agitation.

“Right. That’s it. The two of you are working together to lie to me, aren’t you?

“Or maybe you really are Jenna, and this whole thing is some huge story you made up.

“There was no kidnapping. No sister. No death. Right?”

His voice suddenly caught.

It was as if he was looking at me, and yet somehow looking through me, searching for someone else.

“Jenna, stop this. Look at yourself. Your clothes are all dusty and wrinkled. You don’t even look like yourself.

“You’ve fought with me for so long, dragged yourself into this state… for what?

“Can’t you just stop?”

I let out a short, humorless laugh, shoved him away, and brushed off my shoulder in disgust.

“You saw the death certificate. It’s official, signed and stamped.

“What are you going to say next—that I forged that too? Faking an official seal is a crime, Silas.”

His whole expression froze.

Then his knees gave out, and he dropped onto the couch.

I looked at him with open contempt. “So, Silas, do you want to come see my sister?”

Silas lifted his head stiffly, then ground out through clenched teeth, “Fine. I’ll go. I want to see what kind of stunt she thinks she can pull this time.”

When we got to the car, Sienna slipped in smoothly after us like she belonged there.

I didn’t say a word.

Privately, I almost laughed.

If she wanted to come, I was more than happy to let her.

But the moment we arrived at the funeral home and Silas saw the body covered beneath a white sheet, his face changed completely.

His feet seemed rooted to the floor, as if they’d turned to concrete. He couldn’t take a single step forward.

“No… that’s impossible…

“How could Jenna be dead?”

I leaned in close to his ear, the corner of my mouth lifting in a cold, mocking smile.

“Silas, my sister left three things for me to give you.

“Do you want them?”

At that, Silas’s pupils shrank sharply.

Silas looked up instantly, hope flooding his eyes. “What did she say? Tell me.“Did she… did she say she hated me? Or that she wanted something from me?“Whatever it is, if it was her last wish, I’ll do everything I can.”“She said…” I let out a soft laugh. “She said she didn’t hate you.”His eyes lit up at once.“But she doesn’t love you anymore either. My sister wanted to forget you completely. If possible, she wished she had never met you at all.“She also said that fire all those years ago—she never should have risked everything to save you.“All it gave her was that ugly scar on her arm. Nothing else.“She said dying might not be so bad. At least in death, she could finally get away from you and begin again—clean, untouched.“No wounds in her heart. No wounds on her body.”With every word, Silas’s face grew paler. The light in his eyes dimmed little by little until there was nothing left but darkness. But I still wasn’t done.“She said you should have died in that fire.“If you ha

Several police officers came down the hall. They glanced at the paperwork in their hands, then walked straight to Sienna with practiced precision, their voices flat and cold.“Miss Vale, you are under suspicion for arranging a kidnapping and attempted murder. You need to come with us.”They didn’t even give her time to argue before they cuffed her.Sienna started screaming immediately. “What are you doing? Let go of me! I didn’t do anything!”“Didn’t do anything?” One of the officers let out a short, humorless laugh. “The kidnappers already confessed. You paid in cash and made sure there was no transfer record.“But they weren’t nearly as stupid as you thought. They secretly recorded the deal. Their plan was to use it against you afterward and extort even more money.“And once we had their statements, it didn’t take long to discover that during that period, you withdrew large amounts of cash and sold off several designer bags and pieces of jewelry.“You can continue explaining the rest

Silas’s sobbing stopped abruptly, but he still didn’t turn around.I knew why.He was scared now—scared to face whatever my sister had left for him.But I had no intention of making this easy for him. Before I took out the last item, I deliberately added one more thing.“Oh, and one more detail. Based on everything I’ve uncovered, Sienna framed my sister so many times I’ve lost count.“She deliberately cut her own leg, then claimed Jenna tried to run her over.“She threw herself into a fountain, then said Jenna pushed her.“She said Jenna went to her campus on purpose, spread rumors, and even paid people to gang up on her.“I have proof of all of it. If you want to see it, I can show you anytime.”I knew my sister wasn’t incapable of uncovering the truth. She was just too confident.Too confident in what she thought she had with Silas. Too confident in his loyalty. And by the time she realized the truth, it was already too late.In the very beginning, maybe she really had done all the

The second thing she left behind, however, was nothing more than a thin slip of paper.Silas frowned. “What is this?”I answered slowly, “It’s a donation receipt.“You should remember this. Not long ago, Sienna graduated from college.“The minute she graduated, she came crying to you, saying she’d spent four years being looked down on as the poor scholarship kid and had been humiliated enough.“So she decided she wanted to donate money to the school, to erase that image and polish her reputation.”I let out a quiet, mocking breath.“But where was a brand-new graduate supposed to get that kind of money? Then again, after staying close to you for so long, maybe she’d managed to save a decent amount. Still, would she ever willingly spend it?“No. The whole point of that little performance was to get you to pay for it.“You handed the matter to my sister. And Jenna did make the donation.“But Sienna turned around and accused her of pocketing Pembroke money behind your back, claiming Jenna

He stared at me blankly and asked in a daze, “What… what are they?”I reached into my bag and took out a jade bracelet. It was beautiful—fine quality, unmistakably precious. But it had once been shattered and later painstakingly repaired by my sister with gold and other materials.“This is the first thing she left behind,” I said. “Silas’s grandmother put it on my sister’s wrist herself on her wedding day.“To Jenna, it represented your love. It meant the Pembroke family had accepted her. She treasured it more than almost anything.“So tell me, Silas—what made you think she would smash something this important on purpose just to frame Sienna?“Yes, it later became obvious that Sienna wasn’t nearly as innocent as she looked. But back then, who was she?”“She was just a freshman college student the Pembrokes were sponsoring. What exactly made her important enough for someone to ruin a bracelet like this over?”Sienna’s face flushed bright red. “What exactly are you implying? Jenna was je
