Chapter 2

Author: Narrow Escape
Silas strode toward me and grabbed my arm. “Where’s the scar on your arm?”

I looked at him with a faint, mocking smile. “I told you already. I’m not Jenna. So no, I’m not the one who saved your life.

“That ugly scar was never on me.”

The color drained from his face.

He stared at me, his body going unsteady for a second. “You… you’re really not Jenna?

“She has a twin sister? Why have I never heard about this?”

I nodded, ready to explain.

But before I could say a word, Sienna gave a soft laugh.

“Jenna, I’ll admit it—this is your most convincing performance yet.

“Maybe you can fool Silas, but you can’t fool me. Woman to woman, I can see right through this.”

She crossed her arms and smiled smugly. “Scar removal is so advanced now. I’m guessing that’s what you’ve been doing these past two months.

“That explains why you stayed away so long this time. Before, I even bet Silas you wouldn’t last more than three days before crawling back and calling him. I never thought you’d actually hold out for two whole months.”

She clicked her tongue. “For a second, I thought you’d finally found some self-respect. Turns out you were just setting up a bigger act.”

As she spoke, Silas slowly let go of my arm.

His face hardened again, and when he spoke, his voice was icy with impatience.

“That’s enough, Jenna. Haven’t you dragged this out long enough?

“All this does is make me hate you more.”

I let out a cold laugh and got straight to the point.

“Didn’t you get the kidnappers’ call? You never paid the ransom, so my sister—”

“Mhm, mhm, mhm!” Sienna nodded enthusiastically, interrupting me with a bright little smile. “That part was good. Honestly, with acting like this, you could break into TV.

“Got any more? Come on, do another scene for me.”

The crack of a slap cut her off.

I hit her hard enough to send her face to the side.

It still didn’t feel like enough. I was about to hit her again when Silas caught my wrist.

“You’re the one who caused all this, and you still think you get to hit people first?

“Do you have any idea what I went through when I got that kidnapping call? I really thought something had happened to you. I was standing on the stairs when I heard it—I almost fell.

“Thank God Sienna caught me. And after she found out what was going on, she told me the truth.”

As he said that, Silas pulled a photo from his pocket and threw it at me.

In the picture, my sister was linked arm-in-arm with a strange man, the two of them looking suspiciously close.

The timestamp in the corner matched the exact period when she’d supposedly been kidnapped.

Silas’s eyes were bloodshot. “While I was worried sick about you, you were out shopping with another man?

“If Sienna hadn’t shown me this picture, I’d still be letting you make a fool out of me.”

I knew almost immediately that the photo had been doctored.

But I didn’t say that right away.

Instead, I took out a photo of my own.

It was the only picture I had of me and my sister together. However…

It had been taken ten years ago, when we were fifteen. We were younger, obviously, but our faces were still recognizable.

Silas’s hand shook as he stared at it.

Then he looked up at me in shock.

Sienna touched her chin, putting on an exaggeratedly thoughtful expression. “That could be fake too, you know. Edited. AI-generated. Something like that.”

Silas hesitated for half a second, then nodded as if he’d found solid ground again.

“Right. Exactly. Yours looks fake too.”

I gave a small laugh. “Interesting. You took one look at my photo and called it fake.

“But somehow you couldn’t tell that in yours, the man’s elbow is visibly warped from bad editing?”

Sienna’s expression changed instantly.

A flicker of panic flashed across her face.

Just then, a middle-aged man in a butler’s suit rushed into the room.

“Sir, ma’am—something’s happened to Mrs. Pembroke!”

Then he saw me.

His anxious expression froze, then twisted into outright fear.

“Mrs. Pembroke? Why are you here?”

Silas looked up instantly, hope flooding his eyes. “What did she say? Tell me.“Did she… did she say she hated me? Or that she wanted something from me?“Whatever it is, if it was her last wish, I’ll do everything I can.”“She said…” I let out a soft laugh. “She said she didn’t hate you.”His eyes lit up at once.“But she doesn’t love you anymore either. My sister wanted to forget you completely. If possible, she wished she had never met you at all.“She also said that fire all those years ago—she never should have risked everything to save you.“All it gave her was that ugly scar on her arm. Nothing else.“She said dying might not be so bad. At least in death, she could finally get away from you and begin again—clean, untouched.“No wounds in her heart. No wounds on her body.”With every word, Silas’s face grew paler. The light in his eyes dimmed little by little until there was nothing left but darkness. But I still wasn’t done.“She said you should have died in that fire.“If you ha

Several police officers came down the hall. They glanced at the paperwork in their hands, then walked straight to Sienna with practiced precision, their voices flat and cold.“Miss Vale, you are under suspicion for arranging a kidnapping and attempted murder. You need to come with us.”They didn’t even give her time to argue before they cuffed her.Sienna started screaming immediately. “What are you doing? Let go of me! I didn’t do anything!”“Didn’t do anything?” One of the officers let out a short, humorless laugh. “The kidnappers already confessed. You paid in cash and made sure there was no transfer record.“But they weren’t nearly as stupid as you thought. They secretly recorded the deal. Their plan was to use it against you afterward and extort even more money.“And once we had their statements, it didn’t take long to discover that during that period, you withdrew large amounts of cash and sold off several designer bags and pieces of jewelry.“You can continue explaining the rest

Silas’s sobbing stopped abruptly, but he still didn’t turn around.I knew why.He was scared now—scared to face whatever my sister had left for him.But I had no intention of making this easy for him. Before I took out the last item, I deliberately added one more thing.“Oh, and one more detail. Based on everything I’ve uncovered, Sienna framed my sister so many times I’ve lost count.“She deliberately cut her own leg, then claimed Jenna tried to run her over.“She threw herself into a fountain, then said Jenna pushed her.“She said Jenna went to her campus on purpose, spread rumors, and even paid people to gang up on her.“I have proof of all of it. If you want to see it, I can show you anytime.”I knew my sister wasn’t incapable of uncovering the truth. She was just too confident.Too confident in what she thought she had with Silas. Too confident in his loyalty. And by the time she realized the truth, it was already too late.In the very beginning, maybe she really had done all the

The second thing she left behind, however, was nothing more than a thin slip of paper.Silas frowned. “What is this?”I answered slowly, “It’s a donation receipt.“You should remember this. Not long ago, Sienna graduated from college.“The minute she graduated, she came crying to you, saying she’d spent four years being looked down on as the poor scholarship kid and had been humiliated enough.“So she decided she wanted to donate money to the school, to erase that image and polish her reputation.”I let out a quiet, mocking breath.“But where was a brand-new graduate supposed to get that kind of money? Then again, after staying close to you for so long, maybe she’d managed to save a decent amount. Still, would she ever willingly spend it?“No. The whole point of that little performance was to get you to pay for it.“You handed the matter to my sister. And Jenna did make the donation.“But Sienna turned around and accused her of pocketing Pembroke money behind your back, claiming Jenna

He stared at me blankly and asked in a daze, “What… what are they?”I reached into my bag and took out a jade bracelet. It was beautiful—fine quality, unmistakably precious. But it had once been shattered and later painstakingly repaired by my sister with gold and other materials.“This is the first thing she left behind,” I said. “Silas’s grandmother put it on my sister’s wrist herself on her wedding day.“To Jenna, it represented your love. It meant the Pembroke family had accepted her. She treasured it more than almost anything.“So tell me, Silas—what made you think she would smash something this important on purpose just to frame Sienna?“Yes, it later became obvious that Sienna wasn’t nearly as innocent as she looked. But back then, who was she?”“She was just a freshman college student the Pembrokes were sponsoring. What exactly made her important enough for someone to ruin a bracelet like this over?”Sienna’s face flushed bright red. “What exactly are you implying? Jenna was je

“The one who should leave isn’t you. And if you do leave, it shouldn’t be because someone forced you out.”I spoke slowly, then reached into my bag and pulled out several documents. My ID. My adoption papers. And… my sister’s death certificate.I held them out in front of Silas. “Take a good look. Then tell me whether I’m Jenna or not.”His expression turned strange. He barely looked at the documents at all. Instead, he stared at me and demanded, almost as if he wanted me to say yes:“You’re still lying to me, aren’t you?“If you’re Jenna’s sister, then why don’t you have the same last name?”I met his eyes calmly and answered in a cold, even tone.“My sister and I were abandoned as babies. Our parents saw they’d had twin girls and dumped us.“When we were six, we were adopted by two different families, one after the other. After that, we lost all contact.”Back then, a separation like that could easily become permanent.I was adopted by the Sinclair family and taken south, to Harbor C
