Chapter 2

Author: Fiery Double
The car soon arrived at its destination.

Only then did I realize we seemed to be at an engagement party.

Peyton's childhood sweetheart saw me, and her face twisted for a moment.

The next second, she and her friends surrounded me.

"Where did you come from? Who said you could keep clinging to Peyton?"

She spoke through gritted teeth.

As Peyton approached, she brushed past my shoulder and plunged into the pool. The move was quick and discreet.

I fell silent for a moment, then told the system:

[I should learn to seize every chance to get myself killed like that.]

"Ah! How could you push her?"

Her friends shrieked.

Peyton rushed to her rescue. Once he pulled her out, he pointed at me and snapped:

"Have I been too lenient with you? Have you forgotten your place?"

"How dare you bully someone I care about?"

I raised my eyes and almost laughed.

"If you don't need me, Mr. Wyatt, you can let me go."

"You!"

The mockery in my smile seemed to get under his skin.

Peyton lost his temper and grabbed the necklace around my neck, pulling it tight.

A red mark appeared on my neck as I struggled to breathe.

Yes. Pull harder.

My eyes lit up. I deliberately pulled in the opposite direction, and a look of satisfaction spread across my face...

But the death I imagined never came.

Peyton suddenly let go, and the force of my own movement sent me tumbling to the ground.

"What's wrong with you?"

"Why did you turn into this the moment it became my turn?"

Peyton spat the words through gritted teeth.

"Peyton, you lose your temper too easily. Do you really think she wanted to die?"

I knew that voice all too well.

I opened my eyes.

The man who spoke was handsome, with a faint, cold smile on his lips.

It was Gavin Sullivan, my second love interest.

I came into his life when his family was at its lowest point.

I drank with business executives for his sake until my stomach was perforated. I also spent six months caring for his critically ill mother.

I remembered how he once held my hand and told me I was an angel sent into his life.

Now he looked down on me as I lay there, a witness to my humiliation.

"Is this your new tactic? I'll admit, it's different."

"Why take such an extreme approach to winning us over?"

"I suppose you have to take risks to get what you want. You're quite the actress."

[These men are awful! They faked their affection scores and strung us along. That's why we failed so many times!]

The system fumed on my behalf.

Then a pair of polished black dress shoes stopped in front of me.

"Shannon Wynn, who do you think you're fooling?"

"You'll do anything to seduce a man. You're disgusting."

I looked up and saw his face.

It was Shane Chandler, my first love interest.

I still struggled to breathe.

I lay on the ground and coughed weakly, my face flushed.

Shane couldn't help moving a little closer.

Was that sadness and resentment in his eyes?

I couldn't tell. He quickly turned his face away.

Then his familiar, icy insults fell on me.

"You're making a spectacle of yourself. Did you think threatening to die would earn you sympathy and raise your affection scores?"

"None of us will fall for your tricks. You've worked so hard to win us over. Didn't you know we could control the affection scores ourselves?"

I didn't look at him. I kept my head down, trying to catch my breath and stand.

"What about you? Was your affection score of 99 fake too?"

I got to my feet and stared at Shane, as if I could see right through him.

He was nothing like the man I met ten years ago.

Back then, Shane was an unacknowledged son his parents kept out of sight.

They left him in a shabby rental apartment, where he couldn't even afford the rent.

When the landlord evicted him, he huddled beneath an awning to escape the rain.

The downpour soaked half his body.

Then I stopped beside him and held my umbrella over him...

However much I hated to admit it, I gave Shane my whole heart.

My new body belonged to a recent graduate in her early twenties.I found an easy job at a small company.I quickly settled into the quiet life.I went between home and work each day, content and happy.Sometimes the system updated me on the main quest in this world.[The new player is getting to know Shane. His affection score reached 20.][They moved in together.][This player doesn't seem as willing to put up with hardship as you were. Why does she leave all the work to Shane? His affection score isn't rising nearly as fast as it did for you.]I just smiled and said nothing.I didn't know how much time passed before the system suddenly asked, puzzled:[Wait. Based on your quest, Shane shouldn't have been welcomed back into his wealthy family until his affection score was almost 70. He was twenty-one then.[Why did it happen a whole year early this time? And his affection score—]The mechanical voice cut out in my ear.It beeped twice, then spoke in disbelief.[What's happening? Why i

I watched the chaos that followed my death.I had to admit, it surprised me a little. Then again, they'd lost a toy. Of course they were bored.Gavin took my body and had it cremated before anyone could stop him.By the time Shane reached the crematorium, I was nothing but ashes."Gavin! How dare you?"Shane shouted at the top of his lungs.Only a few days passed, but he had lost all trace of his old charm. His cheeks were hollow, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his dry, bloodshot eyes bulged in a way that was almost frightening."Shane, she's dead."Gavin's face was grim as he stated the fact."You tormented her until she died. Are you satisfied now?"Peyton stood there too, stunned by the absurd scene.Whenever he was nervous, he twisted the emerald ring on his little finger. But when he looked down, he remembered that I polished the ring myself. For a moment, he thought he saw my eyes in its green stone."I don't believe it! How could Shannon leave me? I was supposed to torment

No one answered him.The body before him was a corpse.I wouldn't suddenly sit up and come back to life as I had before. I wouldn't make him think I'd played with his feelings again."Shannon Wynn, did you hear me? I told you to get up."Shane's voice turned cold. When I still didn't move, he glanced at Peyton, who was already retching."You. Lower your affection score until it's negative. Let's see if she keeps pretending to be dead.""Shannon, you hear that? Get up now, and I might be generous enough to give you a few affection points."His words went unanswered.Peyton's expression changed. His mouth hung open, and his voice shook."Something's wrong, Shane. This time feels different...""The affection meter in my head is gone...""What?" Gavin sprang to his feet.He took two disbelieving steps forward and pulled the white sheet farther down my body.In the heat, my body had begun to give off a faint smell."You said she could come back to life, Shane!"Gavin drew a deep breath and

Shane was busy with his engagement. The ceremony was long and elaborate, so he sat down and idly swirled his wineglass. As a ghost, I could drift freely through the venue and look at everything they had arranged.I remembered when we had just turned eighteen. Neither of us had any skills to earn a living, so we took whatever odd jobs we could find. One day, a group of thugs pinned Shane to the ground and beat him.I threw myself over him to protect him. The scars on my back never faded.Later, we worked at a restaurant.Shane was good-looking, so they put him out front to greet guests and take orders. I did odd jobs in the kitchen.Every night, he came to find me and emptied a heavy pot of scalding oil for me.By the end of the year, my hands were covered in calluses and chilblains. He wrapped his large hands around mine.We sat on one side of our cold bed. On the other lay the thin stack of money we had saved all year.He blew warm breath onto my hands.Hot tears fell onto my fingers

The runaway truck hit me at full speed and sent me flying thirty feet.My body slammed into the road.[One more hit! I'll definitely die for good this time!]The system already blocked my pain.I stretched out my hand and clawed at the pavement, my eyes fixed on something ahead. To Gavin, I looked desperate to grab something before I died.He followed my gaze and saw the engagement ring glinting in the grass. The moment he turned his head, the truck ran over me.The last trace of life left my body.Gavin saw me cough up blood as the truck crushed me beyond recognition."Ah! Someone's dead! Call the police!""There's no saving her. Her body's been crushed. Can someone find something to cover her?"Chaos erupted in the road.My soul squeezed free of my body, and I stretched in relief.[Wow! One of my love interests finally tormented me to death! This is great!]I looked around, then faltered. I questioned the system:[What's going on? Why am I still in this world? Weren't you going to gi

I opened my eyes.A white ceiling stretched above me.Was I dead? Had I moved to another world?I blinked. When I saw the man beside me, I nearly choked."See? Someone like her would never willingly die.""She has a system to save her no matter what."Shane leaned against the doorway and pushed his hair back in irritation. "She ruined my engagement day."Peyton, lower your affection score."Peyton sat beside my bed and gave me a mocking glance."If it goes any lower, it'll be negative. How about this? Beg me, and I might be generous enough to raise it a little."I gave a faint, humorless smile and ignored him.Gavin waved a hand, and someone immediately stepped forward to feed me."Enough. Since we can't seem to kill her, she might as well stick around and keep us entertained.""Eat your food, Shannon. You still have to witness Shane's big day."I closed my eyes in despair. On the way to the engagement party, I rode in the same car as Shane and his fiancée.Yvonne nestled against him a
