Chapter 4

Author: Fiery Double
I opened my eyes.

A white ceiling stretched above me.

Was I dead? Had I moved to another world?

I blinked. When I saw the man beside me, I nearly choked.

"See? Someone like her would never willingly die."

"She has a system to save her no matter what."

Shane leaned against the doorway and pushed his hair back in irritation. "She ruined my engagement day.

"Peyton, lower your affection score."

Peyton sat beside my bed and gave me a mocking glance.

"If it goes any lower, it'll be negative. How about this? Beg me, and I might be generous enough to raise it a little."

I gave a faint, humorless smile and ignored him.

Gavin waved a hand, and someone immediately stepped forward to feed me.

"Enough. Since we can't seem to kill her, she might as well stick around and keep us entertained."

"Eat your food, Shannon. You still have to witness Shane's big day."

I closed my eyes in despair.

On the way to the engagement party, I rode in the same car as Shane and his fiancée.

Yvonne nestled against him as if she couldn't hold herself up.

The slightest movement tugged at the wound on her forearm, and she looked up at him through tears until he comforted her.

I curled my lip.

[Shane, you and Yvonne could be as affectionate as you liked. Did you have to keep glancing at me?]

His looks were full of resentment and anger.

Yvonne blinked at me pitifully, though she let her smugness show now and then.

I watched them for a moment, then spoke.

"The diamond in your engagement ring is tiny."

"Compared to the one I got back then, it hardly looks worth wearing."

Shane's face darkened.

Yvonne looked at him with tears in her wide eyes, and his jaw tightened.

"Open your eyes, Shannon. We had this ring custom-made in Valoria. Yvonne and I designed it ourselves. It cost $600,000."

"People get the things they deserve. Didn't you know yours was just a cheap imitation diamond?"

"Shane, I understand why she feels that way. You two have a past..."

Yvonne wiped away her tears, slipped off the ring, and closed her hand around it. "I'll put it back on later. I don't want her to feel bad when she sees it."

"Shannon!"

Shane's face hardened, and he fixed his eyes on me.

I looked back at him eagerly.

What would he try this time? Could he finally do something that killed me?

Instead, Shane opened the window and threw the diamond ring out.

"The engagement party starts in an hour. Get out and find it. If you can't, you can forget about succeeding at this quest."

He smiled as he left me by the road.

Peyton's car pulled up right behind us.

"Poor thing. I'll raise my affection score by two points."

Peyton rolled down his window and smiled at me. "Shane put real feeling into this pair of rings, unlike the cheap ones he gave you."

I stood stunned amid the traffic.

Cars sped past, barely missing me. One furious driver leaned out and shouted:

"Are you crazy? Trying to get yourself killed?"

I waved excitedly. "Yes! That's exactly what I'm trying to do! Can someone help me?"

"Shannon! What is wrong with you?"

Gavin crossed through the traffic and pulled me to the side of the road.

"Shane threw the ring into the grass. Are you blind? Why did you run into the road?"

He rubbed his brow hard, exhaustion in his voice.

"Shannon, the romance game is over. Stop pulling these pathetic stunts. I'm tired of watching them."

"Drop the tricks. If you come and beg me nicely, I might take pity on you and let you stay by my side."

I didn't listen.

I nodded just to appease him, my heart racing.

The system spoke inside my head.

[I'm out of patience, so I called in a cheat! A runaway truck is 200 yards away, Host. Get ready. This one is guaranteed to kill you!]

I used the last of my patience to wait until Gavin turned to look for the ring. Then I lifted my skirt and ran into traffic.

The truck grew larger before my eyes.

Then it hit me.

It felt as though my whole body shattered. Pain swallowed everything.

Yet my heart surged with excitement.

[Preparing to leave this body...]

A countdown sounded in my ears.

Finally! It was finally going to end!

My new body belonged to a recent graduate in her early twenties.I found an easy job at a small company.I quickly settled into the quiet life.I went between home and work each day, content and happy.Sometimes the system updated me on the main quest in this world.[The new player is getting to know Shane. His affection score reached 20.][They moved in together.][This player doesn't seem as willing to put up with hardship as you were. Why does she leave all the work to Shane? His affection score isn't rising nearly as fast as it did for you.]I just smiled and said nothing.I didn't know how much time passed before the system suddenly asked, puzzled:[Wait. Based on your quest, Shane shouldn't have been welcomed back into his wealthy family until his affection score was almost 70. He was twenty-one then.[Why did it happen a whole year early this time? And his affection score—]The mechanical voice cut out in my ear.It beeped twice, then spoke in disbelief.[What's happening? Why i

I watched the chaos that followed my death.I had to admit, it surprised me a little. Then again, they'd lost a toy. Of course they were bored.Gavin took my body and had it cremated before anyone could stop him.By the time Shane reached the crematorium, I was nothing but ashes."Gavin! How dare you?"Shane shouted at the top of his lungs.Only a few days passed, but he had lost all trace of his old charm. His cheeks were hollow, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his dry, bloodshot eyes bulged in a way that was almost frightening."Shane, she's dead."Gavin's face was grim as he stated the fact."You tormented her until she died. Are you satisfied now?"Peyton stood there too, stunned by the absurd scene.Whenever he was nervous, he twisted the emerald ring on his little finger. But when he looked down, he remembered that I polished the ring myself. For a moment, he thought he saw my eyes in its green stone."I don't believe it! How could Shannon leave me? I was supposed to torment

No one answered him.The body before him was a corpse.I wouldn't suddenly sit up and come back to life as I had before. I wouldn't make him think I'd played with his feelings again."Shannon Wynn, did you hear me? I told you to get up."Shane's voice turned cold. When I still didn't move, he glanced at Peyton, who was already retching."You. Lower your affection score until it's negative. Let's see if she keeps pretending to be dead.""Shannon, you hear that? Get up now, and I might be generous enough to give you a few affection points."His words went unanswered.Peyton's expression changed. His mouth hung open, and his voice shook."Something's wrong, Shane. This time feels different...""The affection meter in my head is gone...""What?" Gavin sprang to his feet.He took two disbelieving steps forward and pulled the white sheet farther down my body.In the heat, my body had begun to give off a faint smell."You said she could come back to life, Shane!"Gavin drew a deep breath and

Shane was busy with his engagement. The ceremony was long and elaborate, so he sat down and idly swirled his wineglass. As a ghost, I could drift freely through the venue and look at everything they had arranged.I remembered when we had just turned eighteen. Neither of us had any skills to earn a living, so we took whatever odd jobs we could find. One day, a group of thugs pinned Shane to the ground and beat him.I threw myself over him to protect him. The scars on my back never faded.Later, we worked at a restaurant.Shane was good-looking, so they put him out front to greet guests and take orders. I did odd jobs in the kitchen.Every night, he came to find me and emptied a heavy pot of scalding oil for me.By the end of the year, my hands were covered in calluses and chilblains. He wrapped his large hands around mine.We sat on one side of our cold bed. On the other lay the thin stack of money we had saved all year.He blew warm breath onto my hands.Hot tears fell onto my fingers

The runaway truck hit me at full speed and sent me flying thirty feet.My body slammed into the road.[One more hit! I'll definitely die for good this time!]The system already blocked my pain.I stretched out my hand and clawed at the pavement, my eyes fixed on something ahead. To Gavin, I looked desperate to grab something before I died.He followed my gaze and saw the engagement ring glinting in the grass. The moment he turned his head, the truck ran over me.The last trace of life left my body.Gavin saw me cough up blood as the truck crushed me beyond recognition."Ah! Someone's dead! Call the police!""There's no saving her. Her body's been crushed. Can someone find something to cover her?"Chaos erupted in the road.My soul squeezed free of my body, and I stretched in relief.[Wow! One of my love interests finally tormented me to death!
