Chapter 2

Author: Fox C
The air in the room froze.

Lily's chest, which had been heaving moments earlier, stilled for a split second before she caught herself.

A moment later, she was breathing even harder. "I... I'm not faking... If you don't believe me... you can look at my medical records."

She was hunched over, her face completely drained of color.

I scoffed at her clumsy performance. "If you were in real cardiac distress, your breathing would be weak and uneven, not these huge, theatrical gasps. And when you fainted, every muscle in your body stayed braced. You did it on purpose."

Panic flashed in Lily's eyes, but she kept insisting, "I'm not... I'm really not."

I was about to say more when my mother stepped up and slapped me across the face. "Jessica, that's enough. Do you have any idea how many pills Lily has taken all these years, how much she's suffered? Just because she lived your life for 18 years, you think you can slander her like this?"

I stared hard at my mother and raised my hand to hit her back.

Before I could, my father grabbed my wrist. "Jessica, she's your mother!"

I scoffed. "Exactly. Because she's my mother, you should be grateful all I was going to do was hit her back."

After all, the last person who had laid a hand on me had been in the ground for years.

"Enough!" my father snapped. He walked up to me and said coldly, "You've spent 18 years out there picking up bad habits from all kinds of lowlifes. I don't blame you for that. But from now on, if you keep acting like you were raised in the gutter, I won't go easy on you."

Bad habits? Raised in the gutter?

Of course. When people don't love you, even standing up for yourself gets dismissed as "making a scene."

My two adoptive fathers had treated me far better.

They always told me, "Anyone who hurts you should pay twice over. If you can't make them pay yourself, find someone who can."

"You're right, Father. That was out of line. So since you can't stand the sight of me, why don't you hurry up and send me back?"

My father's face went dark.

Maybe he'd never met anyone who refused to fall in line.

Or maybe he'd expected me to be groveling for forgiveness by now.

Too bad. I don't grovel.

"Jessica, there's nothing I hate more than being threatened. You should be grateful you're Andreani blood. Otherwise, I'd send you straight to hell today."

With that, my father pulled out a stack of papers and set them down in front of me.

"I'll let what just happened slide. But now that you're back in this house, you'll follow its rules. Sign this waiver of your inheritance rights. Don't worry, it's only a little test to prove you're not after the family fortune."

Here for the family fortune?

What a joke.

My first adoptive father had once held a gun to his own head to make me take over his business.

And my second adoptive father had made himself sick and stayed in bed for six months just to get me to come home and run things.

And now my own biological father thought I was after his money and wanted me to sign away my inheritance.

Fine. I'll give it up. That little fortune isn't worth the trouble anyway.

I picked up the pen and, without even reading it, signed my name on the last page.

My father froze. He clearly hadn't expected me to sign without hesitation.

Lily came over and took my hand. "Jessica, don't blame Dad. He's the head of the family, after all. Sometimes his hands are tied. But you're his real daughter. In the end, all of this will be yours anyway."

Daniel stepped forward and tossed the signed agreement at me. "Jessica, the engagement is over. Listen carefully. If you ever bully Lily again, I'll throw you into the pond behind my house and feed you to the crocodiles."

I smiled, folded the agreement, and tucked it into my pocket. "Now that the engagement's off, you and I have nothing to do with each other. And as for you..."

I turned to my father. "If the Andreani family ever goes broke, don't come to me for a loan."

Three days later, the Andreani family had been wiped off the mafia map.My father, once one of Sicily's most powerful men, had been reduced to a street rat.Everyone wanted him dead. But how could I let him die that easily? So I set him up with a respectable enough job at one of his old casinos.Later, I had my mother brought out of the hospital too.The moment they saw each other, my mother lunged for my father's face. "This is all your fault. Our family would never have ended up like this if you hadn't forced Jessica to sign that damn inheritance waiver!"My father ran out of patience and slapped her. "You've got some nerve. If you hadn't crossed Jessica, I wouldn't be in this mess!"They beat each other bloody. I should have been satisfied, but one thing still didn't make sense.I'd sent my mother proof that Lily had been faking, but she never seemed upset that Lily had lied to her.So I had someone send samples of Lily's and my mother's hair for testing. The moment the results came

That night, my father came looking for me, and I knew exactly why.The Morandi family had seized every inch of his territory in Sicily. His docks were cleared out one by one, his casinos were sealed shut, and the contacts on several of his gunrunning routes went silent overnight. The Andreani family, once the most powerful in Sicily, was now penniless. My father huddled outside my room, his fingers digging into the floor, begging over and over. "Jessica, I was wrong. Please, just see me..."I ignored him. He didn't deserve to see me.Before long, the lawyer arrived. He handed the inheritance waiver to my father. "Mr. Andreani, my client instructed me to give you this agreement and tell you that since she signed it, she no longer has anything to do with the Andreani family."My father stared at the agreement, sick with regret. "Jessica, I know you blame me for making you sign this because of Lily. But even if you signed it, you're still my daughter. You can't sign away blood..."Talking

Before the slap could land, my father caught her hand in midair. My mother glared at him and shouted, "Why are you stopping me? She's hurting Lily, and you're just going to stand there and watch?""Shut up!" my father hissed. "Don't forget that Jessica is our real daughter!""She's no daughter of mine—" my mother began, but my father slapped her before she could finish.Marcus gave a cold laugh. "These are the parents you went to all that trouble to find? I really don't know what you were after."Yeah. What am I after?Nothing but a stubborn need to find my birth family. Now I know better. My birth parents have treated me worse than people who aren't even related to me.My mother had completely lost her mind over Lily. She pointed at Marcus and sneered, "Who are you? That little slut Jessica's sugar daddy?"The whole deck fell silent. My father bowed low, begging over and over. "Don Capello, she's just a foolish woman. Please don't hold it against her. I apologize. I'm begging you..."

In full view of every mafia boss who knew him as chairman of the Commission, he leaned toward me, his voice indulgent and affectionate. "Having fun running away from home? You don't even answer your phone. Do you know I've been going out of my mind looking for you? Good thing I saw the DNA report and took a chance on finding you here."Marcus came up right behind him, looking exasperated. "Sure, you just took off without a care in the world, and my vacation went down the drain. Don't say I didn't warn you. Once you're done with your little life experiment, get back home. If nobody signs off on the cargo at your ports, it will all end up at the bottom of the sea next week."A minute earlier, the two men had seemed untouchable. The moment they saw me, they turned into a pair of long-suffering fathers.Standing behind them, my father kept staring at me like he'd never seen me before. In the dead silence, Lily's glass slipped from her hand and hit the deck. Her eyes went wide. "Don Morandi

This year's Alliance Summit was being held on a cruise ship. All 16 decks glowed in the night like a floating palace.Lily and I walked behind our parents. My mother glanced back at me, then pulled me aside. "Why the long face? You want everyone to think you're mistreated in this family?""Mom, Jessica's never been to anything this big. Of course she's a little nervous." Lily stuck up for me, but she couldn't hide the sneer in her eyes.My mother gave me a disgusted look. "Nobody's up on the third deck. Go there. Everyone here today is somebody important. Don't make a fool of me in front of them."Fine by me. I'm not interested anyway. As grand as tonight was, it didn't come close to my adoptive fathers' annual family gatherings.I nodded and headed up to the third deck. The view wasn't bad. I could see straight down to the heart of the party on the first deck.As the princess of Sicily's most powerful mafia family, Lily naturally became the center of attention.Daughters from the othe

Early the next morning, Lily woke me up."Jessica, today's the Alliance Summit. It only happens once every five years. Dad says you're coming too."The Alliance Summit?Oh, right. I remember now.It was the biggest event in the mafia world. Every boss on the planet showed up for it.I'd never been, though. My two adoptive fathers said parties like that were beneath them, so they never let me attend one either.Who knew it would take this family to finally get me there. Before I could answer, Lily took my hand, putting on a show of sisterly concern, and led me to the walk-in closet on the second floor. "Jessica, I know you've spent all these years away and don't have anything suitable to wear, so you can borrow one of my dresses."She opened the doors to reveal more than 3,200 square feet of space, packed with gowns of every kind.Anyone else might have been dazzled. To me, that cluttered mass of clothes wasn't even a tenth as impressive as my own closet. When I said nothing, Lily assum
