Chapter 3

Author: Fox C
Early the next morning, Lily woke me up.

"Jessica, today's the Alliance Summit. It only happens once every five years. Dad says you're coming too."

The Alliance Summit?

Oh, right. I remember now.

It was the biggest event in the mafia world. Every boss on the planet showed up for it.

I'd never been, though.

My two adoptive fathers said parties like that were beneath them, so they never let me attend one either.

Who knew it would take this family to finally get me there.

Before I could answer, Lily took my hand, putting on a show of sisterly concern, and led me to the walk-in closet on the second floor. "Jessica, I know you've spent all these years away and don't have anything suitable to wear, so you can borrow one of my dresses."

She opened the doors to reveal more than 3,200 square feet of space, packed with gowns of every kind.

Anyone else might have been dazzled. To me, that cluttered mass of clothes wasn't even a tenth as impressive as my own closet.

When I said nothing, Lily assumed I was awestruck. She could barely hide the mockery in her eyes. "Dad leads Sicily's most powerful family, so we attend a lot of events. I suppose the dresses add up."

She pulled out a blush-pink dress and held it up against me. "I think this one suits you. Try it on."

I looked down. It was a pink sequined gown that had gone out of style years ago.

Forget the Alliance Summit. It wasn't even fit for an ordinary charity gala.

"No thanks. What I'm wearing is fine."

That was all I said, and Lily's eyes were already red.

I was about to say something else when my mother walked in and pulled Lily behind her. "Jessica! Why are you picking on Lily again?"

Lily tugged at my mother's sleeve. "Mom, don't blame her. I didn't think it through. I just figured since it's her first time at something like this, she shouldn't embarrass the family, but I forgot it was one of my old dresses..."

Before Lily could finish, my mother shoved the dress into my hands. "This is one of Lily's favorite dresses. Don't be ungrateful. Put it on."

"Mom, maybe we should forget it. Jessica is the Andreani family's real heiress. If she goes out in an old dress, people will laugh at her." Lily pretended to be worried about me.

My mother brushed it off. "There's no time to have something new made. Hardly anyone came to the welcome-home party anyway. Nobody's going to notice her."

Then she had a maid bring over a beautiful gift box. "Okay, forget about her. This is the gown I had made for you. Go put it on."

Right in front of me, Lily opened the box and shook out a black dress.

The gown was crafted from hand-cut layers sculpted into shape. Delicate dark-gold vines were embroidered across it and studded with luminous pearls, while the straps glittered with tiny diamonds like scattered stars.

"Mom, this is so beautiful." Lily happily threw her arms around my mother and kissed her cheek.

My mother smiled and stroked her hair. "You deserve beautiful things, sweetheart. Go get changed."

Lily was dressed in no time.

My mother looked her over with a smile and fastened an emerald necklace around her neck. "Lily, you're beautiful."

Lily walked up to me, beaming. "Jessica, isn't my dress pretty?"

I didn't answer. She took my hand. "We were in a rush today. When there's another chance, Mom can have something new made for you..."

As she spoke, her eyes landed on my ears. "Jessica, I didn't notice before, but your earrings are emeralds too. They'd go perfectly with my necklace. Could you give them to me?"

Before I could answer, she reached up to take the earrings off me herself.

I frowned and slapped her hand away.

Lily's eyes filled instantly. "I'm sorry, Jessica. I didn't know you liked them so much..."

Seeing Lily upset, my mother rushed to defend her. She glared at me. "They're only earrings, probably cheap costume jewelry from a flea market. If Lily is willing to take them, she's doing you a favor..."

Cheap flea-market jewelry?

Those earrings had once been worn by a queen. They were an heirloom of the Morandi family, my first adoptive father's family.

"Forget it, Mom. If Jessica doesn't want to give them to me, I won't take them. But Jessica, those stones look kind of fake. Anyone who sees you in them will know they're imitations right away, and people will laugh at you."

When Lily finished, my mother looked at me with even more disgust. "You heard her. You represent the Andreani family now. Don't embarrass me. Take them off."

I gave a small smile and obediently took off the earrings.

Lily slipped the Cartier bracelet off her wrist and held it out to me. "Why don't we trade?"

"Sure." I handed her the earrings. "If you like them, wear them. But I should warn you: they aren't meant for everyone. Bad luck follows the wrong wearer."

Three days later, the Andreani family had been wiped off the mafia map.My father, once one of Sicily's most powerful men, had been reduced to a street rat.Everyone wanted him dead. But how could I let him die that easily? So I set him up with a respectable enough job at one of his old casinos.Later, I had my mother brought out of the hospital too.The moment they saw each other, my mother lunged for my father's face. "This is all your fault. Our family would never have ended up like this if you hadn't forced Jessica to sign that damn inheritance waiver!"My father ran out of patience and slapped her. "You've got some nerve. If you hadn't crossed Jessica, I wouldn't be in this mess!"They beat each other bloody. I should have been satisfied, but one thing still didn't make sense.I'd sent my mother proof that Lily had been faking, but she never seemed upset that Lily had lied to her.So I had someone send samples of Lily's and my mother's hair for testing. The moment the results came

That night, my father came looking for me, and I knew exactly why.The Morandi family had seized every inch of his territory in Sicily. His docks were cleared out one by one, his casinos were sealed shut, and the contacts on several of his gunrunning routes went silent overnight. The Andreani family, once the most powerful in Sicily, was now penniless. My father huddled outside my room, his fingers digging into the floor, begging over and over. "Jessica, I was wrong. Please, just see me..."I ignored him. He didn't deserve to see me.Before long, the lawyer arrived. He handed the inheritance waiver to my father. "Mr. Andreani, my client instructed me to give you this agreement and tell you that since she signed it, she no longer has anything to do with the Andreani family."My father stared at the agreement, sick with regret. "Jessica, I know you blame me for making you sign this because of Lily. But even if you signed it, you're still my daughter. You can't sign away blood..."Talking

Before the slap could land, my father caught her hand in midair. My mother glared at him and shouted, "Why are you stopping me? She's hurting Lily, and you're just going to stand there and watch?""Shut up!" my father hissed. "Don't forget that Jessica is our real daughter!""She's no daughter of mine—" my mother began, but my father slapped her before she could finish.Marcus gave a cold laugh. "These are the parents you went to all that trouble to find? I really don't know what you were after."Yeah. What am I after?Nothing but a stubborn need to find my birth family. Now I know better. My birth parents have treated me worse than people who aren't even related to me.My mother had completely lost her mind over Lily. She pointed at Marcus and sneered, "Who are you? That little slut Jessica's sugar daddy?"The whole deck fell silent. My father bowed low, begging over and over. "Don Capello, she's just a foolish woman. Please don't hold it against her. I apologize. I'm begging you..."

In full view of every mafia boss who knew him as chairman of the Commission, he leaned toward me, his voice indulgent and affectionate. "Having fun running away from home? You don't even answer your phone. Do you know I've been going out of my mind looking for you? Good thing I saw the DNA report and took a chance on finding you here."Marcus came up right behind him, looking exasperated. "Sure, you just took off without a care in the world, and my vacation went down the drain. Don't say I didn't warn you. Once you're done with your little life experiment, get back home. If nobody signs off on the cargo at your ports, it will all end up at the bottom of the sea next week."A minute earlier, the two men had seemed untouchable. The moment they saw me, they turned into a pair of long-suffering fathers.Standing behind them, my father kept staring at me like he'd never seen me before. In the dead silence, Lily's glass slipped from her hand and hit the deck. Her eyes went wide. This year's Alliance Summit was being held on a cruise ship. All 16 decks glowed in the night like a floating palace.Lily and I walked behind our parents. My mother glanced back at me, then pulled me aside. "Why the long face? You want everyone to think you're mistreated in this family?""Mom, Jessica's never been to anything this big. Of course she's a little nervous." Lily stuck up for me, but she couldn't hide the sneer in her eyes.My mother gave me a disgusted look. "Nobody's up on the third deck. Go there. Everyone here today is somebody important. Don't make a fool of me in front of them."Fine by me. I'm not interested anyway. As grand as tonight was, it didn't come close to my adoptive fathers' annual family gatherings.I nodded and headed up to the third deck. The view wasn't bad. I could see straight down to the heart of the party on the first deck.As the princess of Sicily's most powerful mafia family, Lily naturally became the center of attention.Daughters from the othe
