Chapter 4

작가: Half Half
Sloane shot to her feet, pointing at me. "This has always been the Marlowe family's house. Asking you to leave is perfectly reasonable. And we're introducing you to someone for your own good, to give you somewhere to belong. Don't be ungrateful!"

"Let me make this clear right now. Either you remarry or you move out. Otherwise, don't blame us for not being nice about it!" Donovan's tone was harsh.

I took a deep breath. "You need to understand. This house..."

Before I could finish, my mother-in-law, who had been standing silently to the side, suddenly went limp and collapsed straight to the floor.

"Mom!"

Everyone froze in shock.

When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics said only one family member could ride along.

Without thinking, I got in.

After a quick examination at the hospital, the doctor said, "The patient is fine. She just fainted from stress and emotional distress. Her blood pressure spiked.

"She clearly has something on her mind. As her family, try to be more accommodating and don't upset her further. We'll do a full checkup tomorrow. If there are no issues, she can be discharged."

Seeing the doctor say there was nothing serious, Sloane sidled over.

"Graham, so... Maya's home alone with no one watching her. I need to head back."

Donovan immediately chimed in, "I've also got some things to handle. Can you look after Mom for now? We'll come back first thing tomorrow morning to relieve you."

Watching their eagerness to leave, I did not argue. I just nodded.

"Fine. Go ahead. I'll call if anything comes up."

The next day around noon, a nurse came asking for my mother-in-law's ID and insurance card. Only then did I realize I had not brought them.

I called Donovan and Sloane, but after several attempts, no one picked up. I had no choice but to go home and get them myself.

When I reached the front door, I pulled out my key and inserted it into the lock. However, no matter how I turned it, it would not budge. The key would not come out either.

My next-door neighbor came out with her trash. Seeing me struggling with the door, she mentioned casually, "Graham, didn't your family tell you? Your sister-in-law had someone come change the lock this morning. The new lock was just installed not long ago. Your old key definitely won't work."

My heart sank. Changed the lock? What did that mean?

I immediately called Sloane. The next second, her phone's ringtone sounded clearly from inside the apartment. So she was home.

I raised my hand and pounded on the door. "Sloane, open up!"

The sounds inside paused. After a long moment, Sloane finally shouted impatiently through the door. "What are you banging for? Grace is still in the hospital. Why aren't you there watching her? What are you doing back here?"

I suppressed my anger. "What gives you the right to change my lock without permission?"

"Your lock?" Sloane let out a mocking laugh, her tone self-righteous.

"Graham, get it straight. This is the Marlowe family's house! This is Arya's house! Now that Arya's gone, this house belongs to the Marlowes. It belongs to us! I'll change the lock if I want to."

"This house was bought by my father for me. My name is on the property deed!" I raised my voice. "Your whole family has been freeloading here from day one!"

"Stop lying!" Sloane did not believe me at all.

"This house was bought by Arya. Now that she's gone, you have no connection to the Marlowe family anymore. What right do you have to keep living here? Get lost!"

"I'm asking you one last time. Are you opening this door or not?"

"No! If you're so tough, stay out there!"

I took a deep breath. Without wasting any more words on her, I opened my phone's dial pad and pressed three numbers. The moment the call connected, I said in a calm voice, "Hello, I need to report a crime. Someone is illegally occupying my house."

  • Three Months of Mourning   Chapter 12

I added furniture piece by piece. It was nothing extravagant, but everything had to suit my taste and feel comfortable. Moving day arrived with clear skies. When I carried the last box into my new home and closed that brand new security door that belonged to me alone, the entire world seemed to go quiet. There were no prying eyes, no passive-aggressive arguments, and no suffocating schemes. Just a room filled with sunlight, complete silence, and my own steady breathing.I poured myself a glass of water and settled into the sun-drenched couch, looking around. There were no traces of Arya here and no lingering presence of anyone from the Marlowe family. It was clean, new, stamped with my personal choices, and full of limitless future possibilities.Arya's car accident had been just that—an accident. It was a tragedy that shattered my life into pieces.Yet on top of those ruins, after experiencing betrayal, manipulation, abuse, and endless struggles, I had cleared away the rubble wi

The pressure of daily life and their mutual resentment accumulated and erupted day after day. Finally, about six months after I received the final payment from selling the house, I heard Sloane and Donovan got divorced.Sloane took her daughter Maya and slunk back to her distant hometown in another state. Reportedly, she left with barely any decent luggage. As for Donovan, he fell apart completely after the divorce. Without his wife's nagging or the structure of a family, he started drinking heavily. On a rainy night, he went to work the night shift drunk. His foot slipped, and he fell from a loading platform. His right leg broke badly. Even after it healed, he would likely walk with a limp.Naturally, he lost his job.Without income and with medical bills piling up, he reportedly could not even afford rent anymore. He had to move to an even more remote and run-down shared apartment. When I heard this news, my heart remained calm. I felt no satisfaction but no sympathy either.T

Once, I even heard colleagues 'quietly' gossiping in the break room. "I never would have guessed he was that kind of person. He always seemed so decent.""You never really know someone, do you? To treat his wife's family so terribly..."I walked in carrying my cup. They immediately fell silent, looking awkward. That was when I understood. Sloane's scene at my office was just the beginning.Without a permanent solution, this would never end. My work and personal life would know no peace.I did not confront the people spreading rumors. That would be pointless. I contacted a lawyer directly instead.Gathering evidence went smoothly. The security footage from downstairs captured her foul language and slander in full. Several colleagues were willing to testify, and the police report from her disturbance also served as proof. My lawyer told me her behavior constituted defamation. She had seriously damaged my reputation and substantially interfered with my work and life. I could file a

My heart sank. I gestured an apology to the manager and got up to leave. Before I even reached the first-floor reception area, I heard a shrill wailing that drew the attention of many employees."Everyone, look! Look at this heartless man!"Sloane sat on the floor with her hair all disheveled, sobbing dramatically as tears and snot ran down her face. "My sister-in-law just died, and he's already running around with other women! He kicked our whole family out, including his sick mother-in-law! He stole our family's house and sold it for cash. He's trying to destroy us!"Seeing me appear, she got even more worked up. She pointed at me and screamed, "Graham! You have no conscience! Arya's body is barely cold! This is how you treat her brother and her mother?! Are you even human?!"A few colleagues and passing clients whispered among themselves, their eyes shifting between her and me.I walked up to her. Without losing my temper, I calmly told the nearby security guard, "Call the pol

After signing the intent to purchase agreement and receiving a deposit, I never went back to that 'home' again. I found a short-term rental at a hotel near my office and moved all my important belongings and documents there. On the afternoon of the third day, I received a tearful phone call from Sloane. Her voice trembled with unmistakable terror."Graham! Did you... Did you sell the house?" She was practically screaming."Some men showed up today. They looked vicious. They said the house is theirs now! They told us to get out immediately! Was this you?""Yeah." I leaned against the window of my hotel room and watched the traffic below, my tone casual. "It's my house. I can sell it if I want. Is there a problem?""You... How can you be so cruel? You're trying to destroy our entire family!" She started sobbing. "They... They threw all our stuff out! They said if we don't leave, they'll use force! Graham, come talk to them! You can't sell this house! Come here now!""I told the new

Donovan sighed and continued playing the victim. "I know we were wrong before. We didn't think things through when we spoke and acted. For Mom's sake, and for Maya's sake, since she's just a kid, could you give us a little more time?"Once my mom feels better and we find a suitable place, we'll move out for sure. We absolutely won't overstay our welcome!"Sloane quickly added, "Right, right. Graham, it was my fault before. I apologize. Please be the bigger person and don't hold it against us. We promise we won't bother you anymore. We'll just live here quietly. Is that okay?"I looked at their groveling faces now, compared to how aggressive they had been earlier when they changed the locks and tried to throw me out. The irony was almost laughable."No." I said that one word with absolutely no room for negotiation."You!" Sloane's expression darkened.I spoke calmly, my gaze sweeping over them both. "How you manage is your problem. I won't let you stay in this house any longer. Th
