Chapter 4

作者: Bright Lights
I knew that Teresa had never been the type to treat her things carelessly.

Quentin had deliberately destroyed the emerald pendant despite knowing how important it was to me. Teresa had simply failed to see through his little scheme.

Teresa was just about to explain herself, but when Quentin looked like he was going to cry, she set the cup aside and hurried to his side.

"It was just some cheap emerald, so it wasn't even worth much to begin with. It doesn't really matter if you break it. It's not like you did it on purpose, so stop beating yourself up, Quentin."

Quentin glanced over in my direction. "What about him, though?"

Teresa replied, "You don't have to worry about it. I'll talk to him and clear this up."

I dragged myself back to my room, leaving them behind. I couldn't help but feel cold all over, colder than the night I had been kicked out of the house.

Mom and Dad had been indifferent toward me ever since I was young. Grandma was the only one in the family who treated me well. She had personally passed this family heirloom down to me.

Unfortunately, I had managed to lose even that precious piece of affection. Perhaps this was her way of giving me one last piece of advice—to let go of this love and move on.

I took out my sketchbook, which was filled with drawings. I turned to the second-to-last page and solemnly wrote down the number 98.

I didn't even realize Teresa had walked into my room. I was completely caught off guard when she snatched the sketchbook away.

Teresa stared at the number written on the blank page, a strange, uneasy feeling stirring inside her. "Why did you write down that number, Aaron?"

I hurriedly snatched the sketchbook back from her. "It's nothing. It's just some sketch notes."

Teresa saw how nervous I looked, then suddenly thought of something and laughed. "You're still upset about not winning the previous competition, huh?"

She was talking about the "Hundred Drawings Competition" I had casually signed up for online last time. She really wanted to go to Solara back then, and the first prize happened to be a round-trip ticket and a hotel stay there, so I signed up on a whim.

I was an architectural designer, though. I spent most of my time drawing buildings and structures, so my portrait drawing was very rusty.

In the end, I only received a participation prize. When I saw that Teresa had misunderstood, I quietly breathed a sigh of relief and stayed silent.

I was still feeling groggy from the fever as she reminded me to take my medicine. It was one of the few times we had shared such a warm moment.

Teresa smiled and said, "It's just a plane ticket. I'm sure there'll be other opportunities next time, Aaron."

She demonstrated how well-connected she was, saying, "I'll introduce you to some clients once this busy stretch is over. I really hope you can become a famous architect one day. I'm also really sorry about the emerald pendant. I'll do everything I can to compensate you once things settle down, Aaron."

It sounded completely promising, yet my face remained completely expressionless. "Let's talk about that later."

Teresa looked slightly surprised when she saw how indifferent I was. "Isn't this what you've always dreamed of? These resources I'm giving you are things ordinary people couldn't even dream of getting in a lifetime, Aaron."

I felt a sharp pang in my chest, leaving me slightly breathless. I finally understood that she saw me as someone only interested in fame and fortune. It was no wonder she believed I would sell my design drafts to Quentin.

If she had known me even a little better, she would have realized that fame and fortune meant nothing to me—what I truly wanted was genuine love, which money could never buy.

Teresa saw that I had stopped responding and assumed I wasn't feeling well, so she left with Quentin.

I was out of it from the fever that night, so I didn't see any of the many provocative messages Quentin sent me on WhatsApp.

By the time I came to, the plagiarism controversy had already exploded—an overwhelming wave of backlash came crashing down on me, leaving me completely lost.

"I honestly didn't expect Aaron to be involved in plagiarism…"

"You really can't judge a book by its cover, huh? It's no wonder he made a name for himself so fast—he was just stealing other people's design drafts all along!"

"I heard he was broke before all this. He only got ahead by relying on a woman. How else do you think he got access to all those great resources?"

Aaron's and Quentin's voices rang out from the voice recorder. "What do you mean by that?""You're the one who broke your promise first, so today I'm going to teach you a lesson, Aaron.""Teresa won't let you off the hook for this!""Do you actually think she'll believe you?"Teresa remembered this was recorded the day Aaron got hurt. Why would Quentin say something like that? Had she misheard? She couldn't help but widen her eyes in surprise as she continued listening. She could never mistake this voice—it was definitely Quentin."Where should I begin? How about this hand of yours—the one you use to draw your designs?""How long do you think you can keep your scheme under wraps? You won't get off the hook so easily if anything happens to me, Quentin!""No one's ever going to find out. Who gives a damn about a mere plagiarist anyway? Teresa won't even give you the time of day once you're crippled, Aaron!"Hold him down and keep hitting him—don't stop!"Hadn't Quentin sai

On several occasions, Aaron had looked at Teresa with intense longing and expectation. She, however, had never paid it any attention. These gifts were all the things she had left of him at this moment. She noticed a line of small, delicate handwriting on the bottom of the ring box Aaron had left her. She soon realized that every gift box had the same wish written on the bottom.Teresa looked at the same wish repeated on every gift, feeling a pang in her chest. Aaron had given her so many gifts and asked for nothing but the chance to stay with her forever. On the other hand, she had hurt him repeatedly for Quentin's sake. She had gone back on their promise to travel to Jarevon together, taken his design drafts, and forced him to ghostwrite for Quentin. She felt an agonizing pain in her chest whenever she remembered Aaron covered in blood and lying in the dirt, waiting for her for who knows how long. She never realized just how much her coldness had hurt him. She was consumed by

Teresa had brushed it off as a joke back then and even teased Aaron with a smile, "You're being so secretive, huh? You've got me really curious now! I really want to know what you prepared for me now, Aaron!"Yet in that moment, everything had become a thing of the past, with only the weighty sketchbook left behind. Teresa finally understood how she really felt, but it was already too late. Aaron had already vanished from her life before he could ever reveal his secret. She still had no idea what the numbers meant, though. She stood by the desk and pondered for a long time until the cleaner's voice suddenly came from the doorway. "I can't get one of the cabinets to open, Ms. Gardner."It was a cabinet located in the storage room, a place packed with clutter year-round that nobody usually went into.Teresa got up to take a look and found a new lock on the cabinet, which was impossible to open without the passcode. She called the best locksmith, but cracking it would still take t

The HR manager replied, "He was here just five minutes ago. He was wearing a black coat and a black hat when he came by to handle Aaron's resignation."Teresa ran out without another word, ignoring the HR manager's surprised look. She had just stepped out of the company when she spotted a young man in black, wearing a black hat and covering himself completely. She chased him down three blocks before finally stopping him at the entrance to an alley. "Where exactly is Aaron? You'd better not make me ask you a second time."Harrison finally turned around and revealed himself. Teresa's attitude clearly angered him as he snapped, "Aaron has already let go of you! You'll never be able to find him again, Teresa!"With that, he angrily shook off her hand and strode away.Teresa didn't chase after him this time. She recalled what Aaron had said to her that day. "Teresa, this is the last time. I think it's time for me to let go."She had assumed he was just speaking out of anger, never

Though the handwriting was crooked and uneven, the words were clearly legible.Teresa could hardly believe what she read. She stared at that line repeatedly before realizing it was Aaron's farewell note to her. She instantly panicked and dialed the number that had sent her the message. "Where is he now? What's going on here? Tell me!"Harrison brushed off her anxiety with a sneer. "Does the truth even matter to you? Where were you when Aaron was injured? You're actually acting concerned now, huh? You'd better not forget that you chose Quentin over Aaron and left him behind."He ended the call after saying that, leaving only the busy tone.Teresa stood rooted to the spot, unable to come back to her senses. That day, Quentin had been badly injured and had begged her to stay with him.She stayed with him until he was taken care of, then returned to find the place completely empty. She had assumed he had received proper medical treatment and would be all right. If she had known he

Having said that, Quentin spat out a mouthful of blood.Terese panicked. She abandoned me without a second thought after being faced with a choice between us. "Your injuries need attention right away! I'll take you to the hospital first. Aaron is tough, so nothing will happen to him, Quentin."She turned to look at me before leaving, saying, "I'm sorry, but Quentin means too much to me. I'll come back for you in a bit, Aaron."There were times when no amount of explaining mattered as much as one word from the person you loved.I didn't care to find out whether Teresa truly believed Quentin's lies, nor did I want to defend myself anymore. "Teresa, this is the last time. I think it's time for me to let go."Teresa looked at my pale lips, feeling a sudden emptiness in her heart as an inexplicable sorrow washed over her. She wanted to say something more, but Quentin's sharp coughing broke the silence. She brushed aside those strange feelings, supported Quentin, and walked away.T
