Victor Lyon was visibly taken aback by my reply. Then, he carefully scrutinized me with a look of suspicion, as if trying to detect a hint of mischief in my eyes.

Only after confirming that I wasn't joking did he smile with relief.

"That's more like it," he said, stepping forward and taking my hand. In an earnest tone, he continued, "You know Carol comes from a poor background. Plus, Mr. Braun Senior, her grandfather, is seriously ill, so I'm just trying to fulfill his wish."

I quietly withdrew my hand and nodded with a smile.

In my previous life, because I failed to understand his "good intentions", I caused a huge scene at the wedding.

To get back at me for Carol Braun, Victor did everything he could to ruin my father, Terrence Holcomb's, company. He even hired a bunch of thugs to drive Dad to jump to his death.

I tried to report it to the police. But on the way to the station, he caught me and brutally broke both my legs. Then, he admitted me into a mental hospital.

Every day, the nurses forced me to take large amounts of hallucinogenic drugs. Whenever I failed to comply, I was electrocuted, beaten, and gang-raped in turns.

Carol would occasionally visit me. Snuggled in Victor's arms, she would mock my misery without restraint.

It wasn't until three years later, on a cold winter night, that I finally died from the torment.

Thus, when I opened my eyes and confirmed that I had been reborn, the first thing I did was quickly transfer all my assets.

Love was overrated. It would never be as dependable as money. Only what I held in my own hands truly belonged to me.

Without prompting, Victor said, "Come to think of it, today's our third anniversary. I promise you that no one will disturb us this time."

I nodded and said softly, "Whatever you say."

Since I was being so understanding, Victor was naturally in a great mood. He even began making elaborate preparations in earnest, booking the best table at a restaurant and arranging a fireworks show.

Watching his back, I suddenly felt a bit dazed. For a moment, I almost thought that the man who had promised to protect me forever three years ago had returned.

But soon, reason prevailed.

I turned on my laptop and got to work.

In just 15 minutes, I received the confirmation. All the properties under Victor's name had been transferred to my overseas accounts. Those properties alone were worth several hundred million dollars.

After finishing all that, I picked up the long-cold coffee from the table and drank it in one go. The coffee was bitter, but it made me feel immensely satisfied.

As dusk fell, Victor and I arrived at the top floor of the Rotating Garden Restaurant in the city center. Sitting by the window, I could take in the entire city's night view with just a slight turn of my head.

I had to admit that he'd really put some thought into this.

After we were seated, he said to me mysteriously, "This is just the beginning. I've also prepared a special surprise for you."

I took a sip of red wine. Before I could respond, the phone in his pocket rang. It wasn't the usual serious, plain ringtone, but rather a playful, girlish one.

His expression changed instantly. Without a second thought, he answered it.

On the other end of the line, Carol's tearful voice came through.

"Victor, my grandfather's condition suddenly took a turn for the worse. I'm so scared. What should I do? Can you come and keep me company?"

Victor froze. Instinctively, he looked up to gauge my reaction.

I set down my wine glass without a word and just looked back at him calmly.

After a brief silence, he made up his mind.

"Carol, don't be afraid. I'm coming over right now."

He had made his choice.

After hanging up, he put on an apologetic and troubled expression.

"Lilian, you heard what happened with Carol—"

"Go ahead," I interrupted, cutting off his explanation. "After all, it's a matter of life and death. It's only natural that a young woman like her can't handle it alone."

Victor was stunned.

He'd probably braced himself for me to pick a fight with him. Heck, maybe he'd even rehearsed the lecture he would give me about being understanding.

The only thing he hadn't expected was for me to be so calm, without showing the slightest ripple of emotion.

After a few seconds of hesitation, he still didn't think much of it. He leaned down and gave me a peck on the cheek.

"I knew you were the most reasonable person in the world. If you get hungry later, go ahead and order something. I've prepared a surprise for you—don't forget to watch it. After you've eaten, just let me know, and I'll have the driver take you home."

With that, he grabbed his coat and hurried off without looking back.

I picked up the napkin from the table and scrubbed the spot where he'd just kissed me.

Ugh, disgusting.

As for the fine food and the night view, they were innocent; I saw no reason to let them go to waste.

At 9:00 pm, a thunderous boom exploded in the air, and a riot of colors spread across half the sky.

I knew this was the surprise Victor had prepared for me.

But then, as the fireworks burst apart, the words they formed in the mid-air read, "Carol, I will spoil you for a lifetime."

I stared at the plummeting stock prices on my computer screen with a frown.Just then, my phone rang.Even though it was an unknown number, I could guess it was Victor calling. His voice on the other end sounded somewhat manic and smug."Lilian, how does it feel? Feels like the sky is falling, doesn't it? I told you long ago that you can't beat me. If you admit defeat right now, hand the company back to me, and get on your knees to apologize to Carol, maybe I'll consider going easy on you and leave you something to live on."I couldn't help but laugh at his naive threats."Victor, do you really think you can turn things around with such dirty tactics? The funds you're using aren't exactly legitimate, are they? Looks an awful lot like money laundering, don't you think? Did you really believe I spent this entire month doing nothing, just waiting for you to strike?"Victor abruptly stopped laughing."W-What did you say? I have no idea what you're talking about!""It doesn't matte

The guests below finally snapped out of their shock. The once-silent hall instantly erupted into chaos. Murmurs transformed into loud jeers and heated discussion."Holy shit! What a plot twist. Victor actually signed that kind of agreement and still dared to cheat? He was totally asking for it.""Damn, Lilian is brutal. She just pulled the rug right out from under him.""Serves him right for parading his mistress right in front of his wife. Now he's out on the street with nothing but debt.""Things are about to get interesting. We're talking about 1.5 billion dollars in debt here. How's he ever going to pay that back?"I smiled at Victor sympathetically. "Victor, I'm just taking back what's mine. You, on the other hand, will lose it all."Victor completely broke down."You must've gone crazy! You sick, twisted bitch! How dare you scheme against your own husband? You're insane! I'll have you locked up in a mental hospital!"The moment I heard the words "mental hospital", gooseb

"What did you say?" Victor's hand holding the phone jerked violently, and the device nearly slipped from his grasp. "Have you lost your damn mind? I'm Victor Lyon! I'm the boss! How dare you betray me?""Mr. Lyon, please have some self-respect. You are not my boss. If you continue with the verbal abuse, I won't hesitate to have my lawyer take action against you."With that, Gary abruptly ended the call. The beeping dial tone echoed through the deathly silent hall like a series of resounding slaps to the face.Victor stood frozen in place.Seeing the mockery in my eyes, he frantically raised his phone again and dialed the bank and Lyon Group's CFO, Edward Norton."Hello? This is Victor Lyon. Check my account right now! What do you mean it's frozen?""Hello, Edward? What about the company's liquid funds? Transferred out? Who transferred them? Transferred to whom?"As the responses came through from the other end of the line, Victor's face grew grimmer by the second. Unbeknownst t

Carol, who had been trembling on the sidelines, finally found an opening to chime in at that moment. She dabbed at her non-existent tears and looked at me with a pitiful expression."Lilian, I know you don't like me, but the wedding was my grandfather's dying wish. So, why are you targeting me like this? Even if you're jealous that Victor treats me well, you can't just fabricate documents to curse him with bankruptcy. That's just plain evil."As she spoke, she pressed her voluptuous chest against Victor.Victor's protective instincts were instantly aroused, and his expression turned fierce."Lilian, I'm giving you one last chance. Turn off that screen right now and apologize to Carol! Otherwise, don't expect me to consider our past relationship. I told you I'd make it up to you after all of this is over. Must you make this unpleasant for everyone involved?""Make it up to me?" I looked at him coldly. "As if I care about that or your precious project. Victor, don't you understand t

Victor frowned deeply and stepped forward to grab my wrist. Then, he asked in a lowered voice, "Lilian, what do you think you're doing? Get off the stage now. I'll deal with you when we get home.""Home? Do you even have a home anymore?" I let out a mocking laugh and shook off his hand. "You haven't actually owned those properties for a long time now."Victor froze. "What do you mean?""It means you no longer have a home."I pulled a remote control from my pocket and pressed it gently. The hotel's massive LED screen flickered once, and the video of their sweet everyday moments disappeared. In its place were page after page of detailed financial statements, bank transaction records, and scanned copies of asset transfer agreements. All eyes, wide with shock, were fixed on the screen. At the bottom of the screen, the bold red text was impossible to ignore."Total assets under Victor Lyon—Zero. Current liabilities—1.5 billion dollars."The entire hall fell into dead silence.Vic

Victor and Carol's wedding was set to take place at the most luxurious five-star hotel in the city.Although Lyon Group publicly announced that the wedding was merely a performance to fulfill Mr. Braun Senior's dying wish, the scale and grandeur of the event far exceeded that of my own wedding to Victor.Almost everyone of note in the circle showed up. Some were there out of respect for Lyon Group's reputation, others out of curiosity, but most were simply there to watch the drama unfold. The venue was packed. Media and reporters crowded outside the hotel, waiting for a scoop.I arrived in a simple, elegant black dress. At first glance, I looked less like I was there for a wedding and more like I was there for a funeral. The strange looks from the people around me nearly swallowed me whole, and whispers reached my ears without the slightest attempt at concealment."Hey, look—Lilian actually showed up.""I heard the wedding is to fulfill Mr. Braun Senior's dying wish. They say it
