Chapter 2

Author: Sunnys
Next, I carried two large storage bins out of the walk-in closet and started packing.

But once I actually started, I realized just how little in this apartment was truly mine.

I packed my everyday clothes and a few personal items. I left behind every piece of expensive jewelry and every designer bag he'd bought me; none of them had ever suited my style anyway.

At the very bottom of the closet, I found a pink envelope.

It was a love letter Julian had written me himself.

When he was trying to win me over, Julian said that in the age of instant messaging, anyone could confess their feelings anytime, anywhere.

So he wanted to write me a love letter by hand, using an old-fashioned gesture to show me how sincere he was.

I opened the envelope and saw his bold, sweeping handwriting. My heart, which had only just begun to settle, twisted tight all over again.

I gritted my teeth and tore the letter I'd treasured for eight years into shreds.

Then I threw the pieces in the trash.

Walking out of the closet, I stared at the empty living room, my mind drifting.

The apartment was huge, over two thousand square feet. Julian had told me I'd been with him through his hardest days, and this place was his gift to me.

I'd accepted it with joy, but in all the years since, he never once mentioned putting my name on the deed.

The truth was, I should have seen it sooner. In this relationship, I was nothing more than a pathetic, laughable extra in someone else's story.

My phone buzzed.

It was Julian.

"Nora, I've arrived at the hotel. Don't worry."

Normally, I would have called him right away, asking if he was tired, if he'd eaten, what his schedule looked like.

But this time, I couldn't bring myself to care.

After a long pause, I replied with a single word: "Okay."

Julian texted back. "You've been acting weird today. If something's wrong, tell me, okay? Don't just tough it out on your own."

"And don't forget to eat dinner."

His tone was gentle, impossible to find fault with.

"Fine."

I replied flatly.

Julian didn't text again after that.

He was probably too busy with Mia.

At the thought, my stomach lurched. I rushed to the bathroom and dry-heaved for a long time.

Meanwhile, Mia's secret Instagram account was quite a spectacle.

Pose after pose, every single shot styled to perfection.

The last one was taken at a seaside restaurant. The person sitting across from her was cropped out of frame, but the tie clip I'd given Julian caught my eye immediately.

My gaze drifted downward. The engagement ring was gone from Julian's left ring finger.

All that remained was a faint, pale band of skin where it used to be, stark and glaring.

As if mocking me, the loser in this love story.

I sucked in a sharp breath and forced the tears back.

Without knowing why, I scrolled through every single post Mia had ever made.

Their affair had begun just two months after Mia joined Julian's studio three years earlier.

What they shared ran so much deeper than I'd ever imagined.

"He said I was working too hard commuting by subway and bus every day, so he rented me a gorgeous apartment downtown."

My hands trembling, I tapped on her location tag. The apartment was in my neighborhood.

For three whole years, they'd been carrying on right under my nose, and I had no idea.

"Told my favorite photographer I was hungry, and he left his girlfriend waiting at home to make my favorite chicken and dumplings. So good!"

My heart broke, piece by piece.

For eight whole years, I had cooked for Julian. I never knew he could cook like that for someone else.

"Finally got to see the northern lights. He stood in the freezing cold with me for hours, and we got the shot!"

It felt like a fist had reached into my chest and crushed my heart completely.

The scenery was beautiful. Mia was beautiful.

Julian had been photographing Mia for three years, yet he wouldn't even take a single tourist photo of me.

I curled up on the couch, crying and laughing, laughing until I cried all over again.

Under her latest post, I left a comment:

"I think your boyfriend is my fiancé. You didn't know?"

On the twenty-first day after coming home, I spotted a figure that was both familiar and foreign. It was a hot afternoon. I was about to head out for lunch with my coworkers when I happened to glance out the window and saw a familiar man standing below, looking up.My heart dropped."I'm watching my weight. I'll skip lunch today."I told my coworkers and sat back down at my desk.I put off anything that required going outside. Late that night, after checking the street below several times to make sure Julian was gone, I finally left the building. The moment I stepped out, I heard someone call my name from behind."Nora!"I stopped in my tracks and turned around.Julian appeared from around the corner and rushed toward me."Nora, you really came back here."It took me a long time to find out you were working here. I know this is sudden. I'm sorry."Julian's voice was as cool and measured as always, but I could hear the faint tremor he couldn't quite hide.I shook my head."It's fine."G

Mia stumbled back several steps, stunned by his outburst. She had never seen Julian like this. She'd first met him through Nora.Back then, he was refined, polished, with a warm smile that made him seem like the boy next door.Mia was drawn to him instantly. After that, she fell for him completely. She started clinging to Nora all the time, but it was never really about Nora. It was about getting more time around Julian.Mia lowered her head, her voice hoarse."Julian, why are you yelling at me? What did I do wrong?"You're the one who said you liked me. You said Nora was stubborn and boring, and that I was the one who truly understood you."I never planned to ruin your engagement. I never wanted to hurt Nora. You're the one who made her upset. So why are you blaming me now?"Mia's voice was barely a whisper, threaded with hurt.Tears glistened in her eyes, her expression perfectly fragile and sympathetic."What are you saying?"Julian's heart lurched."If you hadn't gotten me drunk at

The plane landed in San Francisco.Julian frantically called everyone Nora knew. Her former coworkers, her friends... but no one had any idea where she'd gone.Julian was out of his mind with panic. With no idea where to turn, he sank to the floor and clawed at his hair."Nora... Nora..."He murmured her name over and over.Just a few days ago, he'd been telling himself that maybe his heart was big enough for two people. One was the fiercely restrained, stubborn Nora. The other was the passionate, spirited Mia.But in this moment, it hit him with brutal clarity: his heart had only ever had room for Nora. The regret was crushing. It consumed him whole. Then a phone call broke the silence."Hello, is this Mr. Hale? I'm Miss Ashford's attending physician. She had surgery to remove uterine fibroids three months ago, and she's several days past her follow-up appointment. We haven't been able to reach her, and you're listed as her emergency contact."Could you please let her know she needs t

Two hours later, the plane touched down smoothly at Portland International Airport.Years ago, I'd left this place with nothing but a small suitcase, following Julian into what would become my eight-year dream. Now, after all that wandering, I was right back where I started. It was a little deflating. For the next several days, I stayed in my room and did all the things I'd never had time for.Binge-watching shows, reading, painting. It suddenly hit me that for the past eight years, aside from Julian, my entire life had been blank.I'd given Julian everything, but somewhere along the way, I'd lost myself.A week later, I decided to start job hunting. My resume wasn't exactly impressive, but my college degree helped, and I quickly landed a position at a consulting firm. That night, I opened a bottle of champagne on my own, sat on the balcony, and toasted the moon to celebrate my fresh start. At that very moment, Julian and Mia were standing on the deck of a cruise ship, looking out at t

Julian came home the next evening. The moment he walked in, I caught the faint scent of crabapple blossoms on him and noticed a faint red mark on his neck.Julian was allergic to crabapple blossoms. He never allowed them anywhere near him.But because Mia liked them, suddenly none of that mattered. The corner of my mouth curled up involuntarily into a cold, mocking smile."Done throwing your tantrum?"Do you have any idea that one comment of yours nearly got Mia harassed online?"Julian tossed his car keys onto the cabinet by the entrance, fuming.I said nothing and continued sorting my things, planning to put them in my suitcase later. My silence only made Julian angrier."Nora, what exactly are you trying to pull? You think giving me the silent treatment is going to make me come crawling?"Playing hard to get? You'll have to do better than that."I straightened up and looked him dead in the eye.
