Chapter 1

Author: Sunnys
Julian had been in photography for eight years, working his way up from an assistant to a renowned photojournalist. From his days of obscurity to landing jobs all over the country, I'd been there the whole time, quietly supporting him every step of the way.

During his busiest year, I had no choice but to quit my job to take care of everything for him, from his meals to his daily needs.

My friends used to tease me. "Your boyfriend's a photographer! Doesn't that mean you get gorgeous photos whenever you want?"

I could only laugh and shake my head. "He thinks taking photos of people is beneath him. Only landscapes are real art, apparently."

The truth was, I had asked him to take my photo more than once over those eight years, and every single time, he'd turned me down.

I told myself he probably just had his principles.

The moment I saw those photos, it all suddenly felt so absurd.

When I went back to the bedroom, I heard Julian murmur my name in his sleep.

But a chill ran down my spine.

I didn't sleep at all that night.

Dawn was just breaking when Julian rolled over and wrapped his arms around me from behind, as naturally as he always did.

I used to love this tenderness before his departures. Now, it made my stomach turn.

I slowly pushed him away. Under Julian's surprised gaze, I said quietly, "I'm a little tired. Just grab something for breakfast yourself."

For the past eight years, whenever Julian was home, no matter how early, I always made him breakfast myself.

I would pack everything he needed for his trips.

Then I would drive him to the airport, hold him tight, and kiss him goodbye.

But this time, Julian was clearly thrown by my distance. "You stay home all day doing nothing. What could you possibly be tired from?"

The words had barely left his mouth when a message popped up on his phone.

"Hey, favorite photographer, I'm packed and ready to go!"

"And don't forget an extra jacket, favorite photographer. It's been raining a lot, and I don't want you getting sick."

Julian snatched up his phone and quickly typed a reply.

Before leaving, he glanced at me.

He must have sensed something was off, because he asked softly, "Nora, what's wrong with you today? Did I do something to upset you?"

I shook my head, then looked him in the eyes.

"Julian, would you take a photo of me? Just a regular one. Nothing fancy at all."

I was holding on to one last shred of hope for us.

I thought, if only he'd say yes.

Just this once.

But Julian refused without a second thought.

"Nora, you're really no fun, you know that?

"I've explained this to you more times than I can count. Why do you always have to push it?"

There was a note of irritation in Julian's voice.

He stormed out in a huff, slamming the door behind him.

I let out a humorless laugh, and my heart sank like a stone.

Three years ago, Mia had broken down sobbing in front of me after losing her job. My heart softened, and since she already had some photography skills, I recommended her to Julian.

Within months, she'd made a name for herself at Julian's studio, quickly becoming his go-to person and eventually his assistant.

I was still celebrating for her, even opening a bottle of wine I'd been saving for years to toast her success.

Who would have thought that Julian and Mia had been carrying on right under my nose?

Julian had taken every photo of Mia that he'd refused to take of me.

He'd opened his heart to Mia after keeping it closed to me for years.

And I had become a complete outsider.

I sat down at the computer, confirmed my flight home for the following week, and then deleted every photo, every memory of us from the hard drive.

On the twenty-first day after coming home, I spotted a figure that was both familiar and foreign. It was a hot afternoon. I was about to head out for lunch with my coworkers when I happened to glance out the window and saw a familiar man standing below, looking up.My heart dropped."I'm watching my weight. I'll skip lunch today."I told my coworkers and sat back down at my desk.I put off anything that required going outside. Late that night, after checking the street below several times to make sure Julian was gone, I finally left the building. The moment I stepped out, I heard someone call my name from behind."Nora!"I stopped in my tracks and turned around.Julian appeared from around the corner and rushed toward me."Nora, you really came back here."It took me a long time to find out you were working here. I know this is sudden. I'm sorry."Julian's voice was as cool and measured as always, but I could hear the faint tremor he couldn't quite hide.I shook my head."It's fine."G

Mia stumbled back several steps, stunned by his outburst. She had never seen Julian like this. She'd first met him through Nora.Back then, he was refined, polished, with a warm smile that made him seem like the boy next door.Mia was drawn to him instantly. After that, she fell for him completely. She started clinging to Nora all the time, but it was never really about Nora. It was about getting more time around Julian.Mia lowered her head, her voice hoarse."Julian, why are you yelling at me? What did I do wrong?"You're the one who said you liked me. You said Nora was stubborn and boring, and that I was the one who truly understood you."I never planned to ruin your engagement. I never wanted to hurt Nora. You're the one who made her upset. So why are you blaming me now?"Mia's voice was barely a whisper, threaded with hurt.Tears glistened in her eyes, her expression perfectly fragile and sympathetic."What are you saying?"Julian's heart lurched."If you hadn't gotten me drunk at

The plane landed in San Francisco.Julian frantically called everyone Nora knew. Her former coworkers, her friends... but no one had any idea where she'd gone.Julian was out of his mind with panic. With no idea where to turn, he sank to the floor and clawed at his hair."Nora... Nora..."He murmured her name over and over.Just a few days ago, he'd been telling himself that maybe his heart was big enough for two people. One was the fiercely restrained, stubborn Nora. The other was the passionate, spirited Mia.But in this moment, it hit him with brutal clarity: his heart had only ever had room for Nora. The regret was crushing. It consumed him whole. Then a phone call broke the silence."Hello, is this Mr. Hale? I'm Miss Ashford's attending physician. She had surgery to remove uterine fibroids three months ago, and she's several days past her follow-up appointment. We haven't been able to reach her, and you're listed as her emergency contact."Could you please let her know she needs t

Two hours later, the plane touched down smoothly at Portland International Airport.Years ago, I'd left this place with nothing but a small suitcase, following Julian into what would become my eight-year dream. Now, after all that wandering, I was right back where I started. It was a little deflating. For the next several days, I stayed in my room and did all the things I'd never had time for.Binge-watching shows, reading, painting. It suddenly hit me that for the past eight years, aside from Julian, my entire life had been blank.I'd given Julian everything, but somewhere along the way, I'd lost myself.A week later, I decided to start job hunting. My resume wasn't exactly impressive, but my college degree helped, and I quickly landed a position at a consulting firm. That night, I opened a bottle of champagne on my own, sat on the balcony, and toasted the moon to celebrate my fresh start. At that very moment, Julian and Mia were standing on the deck of a cruise ship, looking out at t

Julian came home the next evening. The moment he walked in, I caught the faint scent of crabapple blossoms on him and noticed a faint red mark on his neck.Julian was allergic to crabapple blossoms. He never allowed them anywhere near him.But because Mia liked them, suddenly none of that mattered. The corner of my mouth curled up involuntarily into a cold, mocking smile."Done throwing your tantrum?"Do you have any idea that one comment of yours nearly got Mia harassed online?"Julian tossed his car keys onto the cabinet by the entrance, fuming.I said nothing and continued sorting my things, planning to put them in my suitcase later. My silence only made Julian angrier."Nora, what exactly are you trying to pull? You think giving me the silent treatment is going to make me come crawling?"Playing hard to get? You'll have to do better than that."I straightened up and looked him dead in the eye. "I'm not playing games, and I don't need you to win me over.""What's with that attitude?
