Chapter 2

Author: Anwood Young
There was music playing throughout the banquet hall.

I stood by the rearmost pillar as the pack's attention shifted back and forth between me and the stage.

Ryan stood onstage in the black suit I had personally helped him get custom-tailored, his shoulders squared and his back straight. Bella gathered her gown and climbed the stairs one step at a time.

Just then, someone stepped forward with an empty tray as the Elder of the pack announced, "Please exchange your tokens of commitment."

Ryan froze for a moment and looked toward me, as though he had just remembered something.

Bella's gaze swept across the crowd and locked onto me. She then said sweetly, "I was in such a rush earlier that I left my token in the dressing room. Do you mind lending me yours for a moment? I'll only need it for a while, Allie."

Everyone in the banquet hall instantly turned their attention toward me. Maya even gasped and gripped my arm tightly. "You worked through three nights without sleep at the forge to make those two Moonmark Rings, hammering them out one blow at a time, Allie!"

Under everyone's gaze, I walked up to the stage and handed over the velvet box.

Ryan opened the velvet box and saw the two Moonmark Rings inside, his expression instantly softening. He turned to me and said gently, "I know this has been unfair to you, so I'll definitely make it up to you once the ceremony is over, Allie."

"Hold on," Bella said, taking the microphone from the Elder with a gentle smile. "Why don't we have Allie help us put on the rings since she is already up here? It'll make the blessing feel so much more meaningful, after all."

Did Bella really expect me to slip the rings—the ones I had personally forged for Ryan and myself for the ceremony—onto her finger myself? Those Moonmark Rings were engraved with my name on the inside!

I spoke up softly, but my voice echoed clearly across the banquet hall. "I'm not doing it."

Ryan was visibly caught off guard. He had gotten so used to me giving in every time and probably thought I would do the same now. "A-Allie?"

Bella's smile grew even gentler, looking completely innocent. "Have you forgotten, Allie? Those Moonmark Rings are already part of the vow. Ryan will face the vow's backlash if you don't help us put them on, not to mention the calamity the witch foretold. You wouldn't want anything to happen to Ryan, would you, Allie?"

Ryan turned deathly pale. He knew perfectly well that those three Moonvow Stones could be fatal. He grabbed me by the shoulders, his grip so tight that I nearly fell, and leaned toward me, whispering, "Please don't act up right now and help us put on the Moonmark Rings, Allie—just this once."

I suddenly felt a sharp pang in my chest. I had thought I no longer cared about any of this, yet the pain in my chest felt as if something had stabbed straight through it, leaving me unable to breathe.

Ryan loosened his grip on my shoulders and grabbed my hand instead. He opened the velvet box, picked up one of the Moonmark Rings, and forcefully guided my hand, pushing the Moonmark Ring that belonged to me onto Bella's ring finger.

That ring hung loose on her finger and didn't glow at all.

Those below the stage immediately began to whisper among themselves. "Why isn't it glowing?"

"Isn't that the Moonmark Ring?"

"It should glow, no matter who wears it. If it doesn't glow, then it means it never acknowledged their relationship."

Bella's expression faltered, but she quickly put on a smile and held up her hand. "It's such a beautiful ring! Thank you, Allie!"

I took a tissue out of my handbag and slowly wiped my fingers down. "You can wear the Moonmark Ring all you want, but whether it actually acknowledges you isn't up to me."

Bella shuddered slightly while Ryan stiffened on the spot, though he still kept his hand resting intimately on her shoulder.

It wasn't long before the moonlight from the full moon poured through the glass dome of the banquet hall.

Under werewolf custom, tonight should have been the night Ryan marked me, with the Moon Goddess as witness. He would have bitten my nape before the whole pack and left his mark.

I had, however, handed the marking ceremony to someone else instead.

Ryan said the ceremony didn't count without a mark and that we could hold the actual ceremony later. He was right—nothing counted, not him and Bella, not him and me.

Every bit of what I had endured alone over the past three years counted, though.

I turned and walked off the stage. I held myself together all the way out of the banquet hall until the whispers could no longer reach me. It was only then that I noticed that the back of my clothes was soaked through.

Maya was indignant on my behalf. "I would've shifted on the spot if I had stayed there any longer! Why didn't you fight back, Allie? You love Ryan so much! They're clearly using the Moonvow Stones to get away with this!"

"It's not worth it anymore, Maya," I said calmly. I had considered making a scene because I believed Ryan was still worth fighting for, but the moment Bella wore the Moonmark Ring, I knew it was time to put an end to everything.

I scrolled through the contacts on my phone and stopped at Kai Lang. He was one of the few people I really clicked with. He never held back his words and had even mocked my taste in men the last time he caught me crying. He, however, was still the first person I thought of at this moment.

I lowered my gaze, opened his contact, and tapped the call button. He answered the instant the call went through. "I want to use the Moonvow Stone, Kai."

In the blink of an eye, two years had passed. Moonless Atelier had carved out a formidable reputation, rising to become the premier independent artisan studio around. In my first year of business, I had saved enough to purchase the property outright. I now owned the place completely and no longer had to worry about being constrained.Kai returned from an overseas exhibition and handed me a gold-embossed invitation. "You've got a seat reserved for you at next month's Inter-pack Artisan Expo. You'll be one of the guests of honor."I kept my head down as I took the invitation and slipped it under my sketches. I then continued to polish the ring setting in my hands. "Got it. I'll be there."Kai chuckled and took a seat across from me, watching intently as I worked on the piece.I had taken in two new apprentices at the studio—one a werewolf and the other human—who had to treat me respectfully as their mentor. I passed on everything I'd learned at the studio years ago, while giving the

It was a year later, and I was the final featured artisan at the annual werewolf craftsmanship gala. I wore no other jewelry as I stood on the stage, except for the brooch I had designed—from the "Moonless" collection—pinned to my collar.Among those seated below the stage were the senior members of the Moonstone Guild and high-profile clients from far and wide.Ryan had somehow managed to sneak in. He looked far thinner as he stood in the very last row, a look of pathetic defeat in his eyes that I had never witnessed in the past three years. He had tried creating numerous opportunities to reach out to me again, but I was simply too occupied to give him any thought. He wanted to come by my studio, but even getting an appointment to enter the studio was booked solid until the following year.Ryan's Alpha cloak—the one draped over his shoulders—was wrinkled, and half of the pack crest embroidered on the shoulder had been cut off with scissors.Maya later told me that the Elders fro

Six months later, the Moonstone Guild finally held its new artisan exhibition. Although my booth was in the innermost section, it was surrounded by so many people that there was hardly any room to move.I designed the "Moonless" collection without using the typical silver or any materials that were harmful to werewolves. I worked only with moonstone and tungsten steel, setting the strength of the pack and the light of the moon into rings and brooches.Kai stood at the edge of the crowd with a drink in his hand, a faint smile playing on his lips. He then said to the judge beside him, "I told you six months ago that she'd make it, but you just wouldn't believe me."The judge nodded and said, "You can really feel the soul in her work."Just then, an elderly artisan stopped nearby, pointing directly at the brooch in my display cabinet. "That design is practically identical to Mr. Morrow's final piece from 30 years ago! This exhibition is for original creations, not for copies!"A hush

Third-Person POVUpon returning to the apartment, Ryan slammed the dissolution notice onto the coffee table right in front of Bella.Bella was in the middle of painting her nails when she glanced at the paper and smiled sweetly. "Did Allie actually leave? Haven't I already told her that I was just borrowing the marking ceremony? Why does she have to be so petty—"Ryan cut her off, his voice low and tense. "Those three Moonvow Stones were tokens I personally gave you because your mother saved my life back then. I can forgive you for using them to threaten me because I owe your mother my life, but you had no right to push Allie this far, Bella."Bella's eyes instantly welled up with tears. "I didn't do that! I just wanted to escape the calamity the witch warned me—"Ryan scoffed. "That calamity was meant to happen when you turned 24. You reached that age three months ago, Bella!"He was suddenly overcome with exhaustion. He noticed that Allie's house keys were still on the coffee t

Third-Person POVRyan instantly realized that it was Allie's handwriting—every precise stroke matching the script she had engraved on the inside of the Moonmark Rings back at the forge. "I have a Moonvow Stone, too, Ryan."Ryan's eyes widened in surprise. "Kai gave it to me one winter, before I ever met you. He said that if I ever found myself trapped somewhere with no way out, I could use it to ask the Moon Goddess to show me the path I wanted to take. He said he'd get me when the time came. "I'm going to follow my own path now, Ryan."She hadn't signed it with her usual "Your beloved Allie." Instead, she had only written "Allie".Ryan let out a low, guttural growl and crumpled the paper into a ball, only to frantically smooth it out again, afraid that leaving even one more crease in it would make everything real.Ryan's phone suddenly buzzed. He received an official notification from the courthouse. "The mate bond between Ryan Blackwood, the Alpha of the Hawthorne pack, and

It was 8:00 am the following day, and I wheeled my suitcase out of the guest room. I placed the house keys on the coffee table, then pulled a sheet of paper from my handbag and laid it beneath the key. It was a copy of the mate bond certificate issued by the city hall three years ago.I hesitated for a moment before closing the door behind me.I opened the last message Ryan had sent me before the marking ceremony. "I've double-checked everything for the ceremony. You'll be the brightest star of the night, Allie."I stared at the message for a couple of seconds before I deleted it.There was hardly anyone on the street.A black car was parked outside the residential complex. Kai got out of the driver's seat and took my suitcase. "Is that all you've got? If you need anything, I'll take you to go buy it later, Allie.""I didn't own much to begin with."Kai handed me a paper bag with a sandwich inside—bacon and egg, without any mayo. I took it from him, feeling the warmth of the bag
