Chapter 2

Author: Flowering Tree
The truth was, I was supposed to be the Donna.

Then Victor's family ran into trouble. To secure Angela's father's backing, he had to marry her.

The day their engagement was announced, I fought with him for the first time.

I smashed everything in the room, sobbing as I told him to get out.

Victor dragged me into his arms like a man possessed and wouldn't let go no matter how hard I hit him.

"It's a marriage on paper only.

"Carina, I won't touch her. There has never been anyone but you."

For a long time afterward, he kept his word.

He loved me even more fiercely to make up for what the marriage had cost me.

He even chose me without hesitation during the explosion.

And from that day on, everything changed.

At family council meetings, he would overturn my decisions simply because Angela said so.

One after another, he canceled the dinners he'd promised me.

Sometimes I'd go to him and he'd move out of reach without even thinking.

And there were marks on his neck that weren't mine.

I finally went to confront him. With my hand on the door handle, I heard voices inside.

"I'm the one who neglected you. I'm going to make it all up to you."

Then came Angela's breathless voice. "And Carina?"

The room went quiet for a few seconds.

Those few seconds felt endless.

And then I heard him say, "She's already gotten more than enough."

I let go of the handle.

That same day, I wanted to walk away from everything and leave the Castellano family.

But I had my own family to think of. If I left, Victor wouldn't leave them alone.

So I stopped making trouble. I did my work and forced myself to forget what we'd once had, little by little.

What I hadn't expected was to take the blame for every mistake Angela made after that.

It destroyed the reputation I'd spent years building in the family and brought endless humiliation on my own family.

It couldn't go on.

So that night, I contacted a black-market forger and had him create a new identity for me.

Then I went to a doctor who owed me a favor and had him prepare a death certificate good enough to fool anyone.

Three days later, I attended another family council meeting.

I limped into the council room.

Victor and Angela sat side by side at the head of the table. My seat had been moved to the far corner.

I braced a hand on the table as I sat down. Angela raised an eyebrow, pretending to be surprised.

"Carina, you came. Healed already?"

I didn't look at her.

"Council meetings matter. Of course I came."

"True enough."

Angela picked up a file from the table.

"There's a job no one has taken on yet. I think it would suit you."

"Her?"

One of the captains laughed out loud.

"Donna, find somebody else. I have no interest in cleaning up after her again."

Everyone laughed, and Angela frowned and put on a show of defending me.

"Everyone makes mistakes. Carina should get another chance."

The man across from me gave a cold laugh.

"There was a rat in her casino last month. She mishandled it, and we lost close to a million dollars.

"She can't run what she already has, and now she wants somebody else's work?"

"Right. Chances go to people who can deliver. She's lucky we haven't thrown her out of the family."

"If you ask me, take back everything she runs now and reassign all of it."

My father shot to his feet and slammed a hand on the table.

"She won every one of those businesses herself. Who are you to divide them up?

"She made a few mistakes, and she's been punished for them. You're just looking for an excuse to take what's hers!"

"A few?"

Somebody laughed at that.

"How many times has your daughter screwed up? Or have you lost count?

"If she was capable enough to win them, she should be capable enough to hold them."

My father's face darkened with fury as he argued with them.

I didn't hear a word.

I looked past them at Victor, seated at the head of the table.

They'd refused to work under me and proposed taking my businesses and my people. Through it all, he hadn't said a word.

His expression never even changed.

I laughed bitterly at myself, then tapped the table twice.

"Enough."

The council room went silent.

I swept a cold gaze around the table, then fixed it on Victor.

"None of you gets to decide whether my people and my businesses are taken away.

"Don, what do you say?"

Victor finally raised his head.

Our eyes met across the table.

Then he looked away and said flatly, "As of today, Carina is stripped of all authority in the South District. Her businesses and her people will be reassigned."

"Don! Carina paid for the South District with her..."

"Dad, let it go." I put my hand over his and cut him off.

"It doesn't matter.

"The Don has decided. So that's how it is."

Victor froze. He frowned at me, his lips parting as if he wanted to say something.

But I'd already looked away. I didn't look at him again.

After a long moment, he looked away too and awkwardly adjusted his cuff.

"That concludes today's council."

Before the meeting had even ended, they were excitedly dividing up what had been mine.

"I'll take the casino in the South District."

"The docks are mine."

At that, my father sank into his chair, one hand pressed hard against his chest.

I scrambled for his pills and helped him take them. Only when the color returned to his face could I breathe again.

Then I took the asset transfer agreement I'd prepared out of my bag.

"Dad, sign it."

He looked at me, confused. "Why are you putting all of it in my name?"

I gave a small, bitter smile.

"So the next time I make a mistake, they can't use it as an excuse to take these too."

My father's eyes reddened as he pulled me into his arms.

"Carina, I failed to protect you."

I didn't say anything. I just put a hand on his back.

It wasn't his fault.

It was mine, for blindly trusting one man for so long.

I'd give the Castellano family back what belonged to them.

But I wouldn't let anyone take what was mine.

The final battle was over the main port in Palermo.Nearly half the Castellano family's shipping passed through it. If Victor lost it, Simon would finally have enough leverage to face him as an equal."I can't give up the main port."Victor pressed his hand flat against the agreement."The moment I sign, every captain loyal to me will go over to Simon. I won't just lose my position as Don. I'll lose my right to sit at this table. He looked up at me."If I lose everything, how am I supposed to compete with him for you?"Victor tore the agreement apart."So this time, I won't give it up."I looked at the scraps of paper on the floor and laughed."I haven't threatened you, and I'm not forcing you."I'm only reminding you that you still have a promise to keep, Don."Victor froze."Now I want you to keep that promise."I watched the pen hover without touching the paper and laughed again.Victor looked up."What are you laughing at?""The fact that I once believed you'd keep it."I pulled th

Three days later, Simon announced a celebration. That night, I entered the ballroom on Simon's arm and immediately spotted Victor in the crowd. He clearly wasn't enjoying himself. The drink in front of him hadn't been touched. Then he saw me, and his casual expression froze.I wore a long gold dress and a gold feathered mask, my chin held high. The gold of my dress caught the light, making me glow. The room fell quiet for a moment. Then someone laughed."Simon, am I seeing this right?"The man stepped closer, a glass in his hand, and openly looked me up and down."I've known you for years, and I've never seen you so protective of a woman. Has someone finally got you wrapped around her finger?"Laughter spread through the room."That's not all. I watched them come in. Simon never let go of her once.""Well, that's a first.""Don't just stand there laughing," someone else called. "Let's see the woman who's got Simon acting like this."The others joined in at once."Take the mask off!""C

The next day, every captain in the Castellano family gathered in the room again. After what had happened, they were all waiting for Victor's answer.Victor sat at the head of the table. His first words were, "As of today, Angela is stripped of her title as Donna."The room erupted. Angela's father jumped to his feet and struck the floor with his cane."Victor! This is your answer to the family? Simon brings in a few worthless pieces of paper, and you strip my daughter of her title?"Victor didn't argue. He simply raised a hand.A second later, Angela's voice rang out clearly from the recording. The maid's statement followed, detailing every time Angela had framed Carina over the years. The room gradually fell silent. The anger froze on Angela's father's face.Only then did Victor look up at him coldly."You wanted an answer. Is that enough?""Enough! More than enough!"Simon stood up and gave two slow claps."The Don's evidence is certainly more thorough this time. Carina was convicted

At another estate.A faint medicinal smell lingered in the air. An IV stand stood beside the bed.Carina lay weakly in bed, her chest still heavy. The door opened, and Simon came in."I didn't think Angela would go that far. Drowning you at sea? A few minutes later, and you really would have died. Our plan nearly got you killed."He held out a medical file."Your old wounds never healed. After this, you'll have permanent damage."Carina didn't take the file. Exhausted, she rubbed the space between her brows."It doesn't matter.""It matters to me."Simon sat beside her, a hint of a smile on his face."Because if Victor finds out you died at my estate, he'll probably kill me on the spot."My people say Victor had Angela locked up as soon as he heard you were dead. Then he fell ill himself. If I'd known you mattered so much to him..."Simon's eyes narrowed."I should have gone after you a long time ago, instead of waiting for you to come to me with a deal."A week earlier, Carina had onl

That night, Victor canceled an important meeting and flew back to Sicily on a private plane. He reached the estate just as the convoy that had taken Carina away returned through the gates.Car doors opened one after another. The men who'd accompanied her looked relaxed, as if they'd just finished a difficult job.Angela heard Victor was back and came out of the main building to meet him. She'd barely opened the door when Victor lunged at her, before she could say a word.He clamped a hand around her throat and slammed her against the wall."Who gave you permission to have Carina killed without my order?"Angela's chin tilted up, her feet nearly leaving the ground. Her face flushed as her struggles weakened.Everyone around them fell silent. His second-in-command's expression changed. He forced himself to step forward."Don, Carina defected and then tried to kill the Donna. Under family law, that's enough to convict her."He paused, glancing at Angela's face. It had turned purple."And

The next morning, Victor wasn't at the table. I was told he'd gone abroad for negotiations. There were several times as many guards watching me as before.Angela looked at the guards around me with satisfaction. "The Don goes to such lengths to protect me."I laughed at her.Her smile froze. "What are you laughing at?""You flatter yourself."I undid the top buttons of my shirt, showing her the marks Victor had left the night before."They're here to keep me from falling for another man. And you thought this was about you.""That's not possible!"Angela stared at the marks, the color draining from her face.I slowly buttoned my shirt and raised my chin in deliberate defiance."Why so surprised?"He's always loved me most. Marrying you was just a way to secure an alliance."Angela exploded."Carina!" she screamed, lunging at me with her hand raised.I dodged, and her hand swept past my ear."You cheap little bitch!"You think you've beaten me because he kissed you a couple of times?
