"You changed the time of the exchange at the port without authorization?"

"Yes."

"You failed to verify the intelligence, and four of our people were badly hurt. That was your doing too?"

"Yes."

The man behind the long table turned to the last page.

"And the shipment the police seized because you exposed the route? Do you admit to that too?"

I knelt in the middle of the hall and nodded.

"I admit it."

The captains around the table erupted the second I said it.

"The Don trusted her with everything, and she keeps making these basic mistakes!"

"If this keeps up, who's going to want to work under her?"

I didn't explain.

A second later, the man behind me brought the whip down hard across my back.

Old wounds that had barely closed split open again. Blood soaked through my shirt.

At the 99th stroke, I couldn't hold myself up anymore. I collapsed onto the floor.

Nobody in that room felt sorry for me.

The people who used to trust me looked at me now with nothing but disappointment and contempt.

One pair of dress shoes after another moved out of sight. Finally, a pair of high heels stopped in front of me.

Angela, the Donna of the Castellano family, planted her heel on my back.

I forced my head up and looked at her through red-rimmed eyes.

She didn't care. She ground her heel into my spine.

"Why are you looking at me like that? Something bothering you?"

My fingertips dug into the floorboards. "What do you think?" I ground out through clenched teeth.

"Being upset won't help you."

Angela crouched down slowly and patted my face.

"Whatever they do to you, Victor will always side with me.

"As long as he protects me, there's nothing you can do to me. Ever."

I laughed, then bit down on her finger as hard as I could.

"Ah!"

Angela jerked her hand back in pain. I spat out a mouthful of blood and gave her a contemptuous look.

"Angela, you had better pray he protects you for the rest of your life."

She grabbed the whip beside her and raised it. Just then, Victor called from outside the door. "Carina!"

Angela's expression changed. She dropped the whip at once.

By the time Victor came through the door, she was holding up her bitten finger for him to see.

"Victor, you're here.

"I tried to help Carina up, but she still blames me. She wouldn't let me touch her. She bit me!"

Concern flashed in Victor's eyes as he looked at her fingertip.

Then he saw me lying facedown on the floor, barely able to move. He said nothing about the bite.

He pressed his handkerchief into Angela's palm, then bent down and picked me up.

"How did it get this bad?"

The concern in his voice was almost laughable.

Once, he couldn't bear to see so much as a scrape on me.

Now every drop of blood I shed was on his orders.

Victor carried me back to my room and tried to dress the wounds himself.

Before he could touch me, I took the ointment from his hand. "You have a wife," I said coolly. "From now on, I'll do this myself."

Victor's face went cold.

"Carina, you've always known why Angela and I married."

"I know."

"Then what are you still upset about?"

I lowered my head and rubbed the ointment onto my wrist.

"She's the Donna—your lawful wife. It's better if we keep some distance."

Victor stared at me for a long time, then let out a cold laugh.

"If I actually loved her, why would I have come for you first in that explosion?"

My hands stilled.

This again.

Victor lifted my chin and made me look at him.

"Carina, if that doesn't prove who I love, what exactly do you want me to do?"

I held up my swollen wrist and said, "Is this what you call proof?"

Victor had no answer. He looked away, his patience wearing thin.

"Because I came for you first, Angela didn't get treatment in time. Now she can never have a child.

"People in this family have been talking about her ever since.

"And if the captains find out she's botched several jobs in a row, who's ever going to accept her as Donna?"

He walked over to the bed and lit a cigarette in frustration.

"Carina, we owe her this.

"You are alive because of her. What's the big deal about taking the blame for a few small mistakes?"

I stared at him for a few seconds before repeating quietly, "Small mistakes?"

I remembered every time they'd dragged me into the punishment room.

Hundreds of lash marks, 11 days locked up, six public punishments, and more humiliation than I could count.

I didn't know what to say to him.

"Never mind. Go."

"Carina."

"I'm tired."

I turned my back on him. I didn't want to say one more word.

Victor said nothing more. He finished his cigarette in silence and crushed it out.

The door opened. From outside, I heard him give an order. "Give her the best treatment we have. I don't want a single scar left."

And a moment later, "Nobody is to know what Angela did.

"Carina confessed to it, so keep your mouths shut."

Bang.

The door slammed shut behind him.

I lay under the blankets, staring at the marks on my wrist. Some had faded more than others.

He'd always given me the best treatment available. But even the best medicine couldn't erase every scar.

Just as nothing could erase what had happened.

That night I took a notebook out of the bottom of my nightstand.

It listed every offense I'd taken the blame for over the past three years.

Everything from disposing of an important prisoner without authorization to losing a key to one of the Castellano warehouses.

And every time, Victor would tell me, "This is the last time."

Yet here I was.

I read it for a long time, then turned to a blank page and wrote: [The last time.]

This time he wasn't the one saying it.

I was.

Victor kept saying I would have died if he hadn't come for me first. Fine. I'd treat this life as one Angela had bought for me.

I'd take the blame for her one last time.

After that, my debt to her would be paid in full.

When that day came, I'd die in front of them all.

And leave this family for good.

The final battle was over the main port in Palermo.Nearly half the Castellano family's shipping passed through it. If Victor lost it, Simon would finally have enough leverage to face him as an equal."I can't give up the main port."Victor pressed his hand flat against the agreement."The moment I sign, every captain loyal to me will go over to Simon. I won't just lose my position as Don. I'll lose my right to sit at this table. He looked up at me."If I lose everything, how am I supposed to compete with him for you?"Victor tore the agreement apart."So this time, I won't give it up."I looked at the scraps of paper on the floor and laughed."I haven't threatened you, and I'm not forcing you."I'm only reminding you that you still have a promise to keep, Don."Victor froze."Now I want you to keep that promise."I watched the pen hover without touching the paper and laughed again.Victor looked up."What are you laughing at?""The fact that I once believed you'd keep it."I pulled th

Three days later, Simon announced a celebration. That night, I entered the ballroom on Simon's arm and immediately spotted Victor in the crowd. He clearly wasn't enjoying himself. The drink in front of him hadn't been touched. Then he saw me, and his casual expression froze.I wore a long gold dress and a gold feathered mask, my chin held high. The gold of my dress caught the light, making me glow. The room fell quiet for a moment. Then someone laughed."Simon, am I seeing this right?"The man stepped closer, a glass in his hand, and openly looked me up and down."I've known you for years, and I've never seen you so protective of a woman. Has someone finally got you wrapped around her finger?"Laughter spread through the room."That's not all. I watched them come in. Simon never let go of her once.""Well, that's a first.""Don't just stand there laughing," someone else called. "Let's see the woman who's got Simon acting like this."The others joined in at once."Take the mask off!""C

The next day, every captain in the Castellano family gathered in the room again. After what had happened, they were all waiting for Victor's answer.Victor sat at the head of the table. His first words were, "As of today, Angela is stripped of her title as Donna."The room erupted. Angela's father jumped to his feet and struck the floor with his cane."Victor! This is your answer to the family? Simon brings in a few worthless pieces of paper, and you strip my daughter of her title?"Victor didn't argue. He simply raised a hand.A second later, Angela's voice rang out clearly from the recording. The maid's statement followed, detailing every time Angela had framed Carina over the years. The room gradually fell silent. The anger froze on Angela's father's face.Only then did Victor look up at him coldly."You wanted an answer. Is that enough?""Enough! More than enough!"Simon stood up and gave two slow claps."The Don's evidence is certainly more thorough this time. Carina was convicted

At another estate.A faint medicinal smell lingered in the air. An IV stand stood beside the bed.Carina lay weakly in bed, her chest still heavy. The door opened, and Simon came in."I didn't think Angela would go that far. Drowning you at sea? A few minutes later, and you really would have died. Our plan nearly got you killed."He held out a medical file."Your old wounds never healed. After this, you'll have permanent damage."Carina didn't take the file. Exhausted, she rubbed the space between her brows."It doesn't matter.""It matters to me."Simon sat beside her, a hint of a smile on his face."Because if Victor finds out you died at my estate, he'll probably kill me on the spot."My people say Victor had Angela locked up as soon as he heard you were dead. Then he fell ill himself. If I'd known you mattered so much to him..."Simon's eyes narrowed."I should have gone after you a long time ago, instead of waiting for you to come to me with a deal."A week earlier, Carina had onl

That night, Victor canceled an important meeting and flew back to Sicily on a private plane. He reached the estate just as the convoy that had taken Carina away returned through the gates.Car doors opened one after another. The men who'd accompanied her looked relaxed, as if they'd just finished a difficult job.Angela heard Victor was back and came out of the main building to meet him. She'd barely opened the door when Victor lunged at her, before she could say a word.He clamped a hand around her throat and slammed her against the wall."Who gave you permission to have Carina killed without my order?"Angela's chin tilted up, her feet nearly leaving the ground. Her face flushed as her struggles weakened.Everyone around them fell silent. His second-in-command's expression changed. He forced himself to step forward."Don, Carina defected and then tried to kill the Donna. Under family law, that's enough to convict her."He paused, glancing at Angela's face. It had turned purple."And

The next morning, Victor wasn't at the table. I was told he'd gone abroad for negotiations. There were several times as many guards watching me as before.Angela looked at the guards around me with satisfaction. "The Don goes to such lengths to protect me."I laughed at her.Her smile froze. "What are you laughing at?""You flatter yourself."I undid the top buttons of my shirt, showing her the marks Victor had left the night before."They're here to keep me from falling for another man. And you thought this was about you.""That's not possible!"Angela stared at the marks, the color draining from her face.I slowly buttoned my shirt and raised my chin in deliberate defiance."Why so surprised?"He's always loved me most. Marrying you was just a way to secure an alliance."Angela exploded."Carina!" she screamed, lunging at me with her hand raised.I dodged, and her hand swept past my ear."You cheap little bitch!"You think you've beaten me because he kissed you a couple of times?
