“I’m at the Luffy restaurant. Can you come ma’am, there’s something important I need to discuss with you.”

“Okay. Sure.”

Haley ended the call. She stopped a car when she got outside and told the driver to take her to the Luffy restaurant.

As soon as she got there, Haley saw the man seated and waiting for her. She smiled as she got to his table.

“Sorry. Are you Jude Firth? The one who called me before, that you’re sent by my grandfather to me?” She asked.

“Yes ma’am. I’m your grandfather’s assistant. Please have a seat.” The man smiled and gestured for her to have a seat.

Haley returned the smile and sat down. “You said it was something important? Is it about my grandfather? Is he okay. Is he—“

“Yes ma’am, old master is fine.”

Haley sighed in relief.

The man placed the phone in his hand into the pocket of his suit, then turned to look her.

"Ma’am, your grandfather told me to tell you he has forgiven you," stated Jude.

"He would like you and your husband to come visit," Jude went on. “He is prepared to give you all of his possessions as promised. What time would be ideal?”

"Really? Haley’s voice faltered as she couldn't conceal her happiness. "That's incredible, Jude. I'm able to visit today."

She let out a long breath, as the burden she had been carrying for three years had finally been removed. The call had finally arrived after three arduous years of waiting.

At last!

Three years prior, Haley had defied her grandfather by choosing Kieran Colin over her family’s fortune and the marriage he had arranged and had left. And now, her grandfather had forgiven her for that.

It demonstrated that she had made the correct decision. The sacrifice had been worthwhile because of Kieran.

Additionally, it was her and Kieran’s fourth anniversary today.. This called for double celebration.

Haley intended to give them both the future they deserved by shocking Kieran with the news.

“Okay ma’am. But to make the transfer, your grandfather's lawyer had requested that you get a certified copy of your marriage license. Is it possible for us to go get it now?”

“Of course. Let’s go.” Haley responded.

When they got out of the restaurant, Jude pointed at the car waiting and gestured for her to get in after opening the car door.

*****

The office of the county clerk had a subtle scent of old files and paper. It was the same registry office where she and Kieran got their marriage license, so they have the records on file.

Excitement pounded in Haley’s heart. She went up to the clerk and told him about getting the certified copy after providing some info.

She smiled gently as she imagined Kieran’s astonished reaction upon discovering the truth, that she’s from a wealthy background. She had hidden her family’s background from him this three years.

The clerk entered data into the system, double-checked, and then double-checked. His expression stiffened as his frown grew deeper.

"Ms. Kane, I'm very sorry," he said, looking up at Haley with a professional, keen stare after some time. “This marriage certificate is a fake. Our records indicate that you are single at the moment."

"Uh? Unmarried?" Haley froze, shock showing on her face. "That's impossible."

The clerk continued to speak in a kind but forceful tone. “Mr Kieran Colin is, nevertheless, lawfully wed. Lydia Douglas is mentioned as his spouse here.”

The remarks struck like a blow to Haley’s body. She leaped to her feet and raised her voice. "That is untrue! How could the certificate be phony?”

"I'm afraid the records are clear," the clerk said. “Additionally, Mr. Colin and Ms. Douglas have a daughter, Riley Douglas Colin. Riley is three years old.”

"What?" Haley stumbled.

Riley….Kieran’s daughter? Three years of age?

"The marriage was registered three years ago," the clerk added, "on the exact same date as this certificate.”

Riley, the young girl Haley had cherished like her own goddaughter, was the biological child of Kieran?

Haley’s legs gave out and her vision darkened.

Jude steadily grasped her. "Ma’am," he murmured, struggling to contain his rage, "this is unacceptable. Right now, I'm phoning your grandfather—“

"No," Haley abruptly interrupted, putting her fingers to her temples. "Don't tell him just yet, Jude. I need time to work this out on my own. Please.”

Then something struck her, and she turned to the clerk, her voice raspy. "The child's birth date—can you check that?"

It was excruciatingly loud to hear the keys tapping against the keyboard.

“It’s March 31st at 2:10 p.m.” the clerk said after a while.

The date struck her in the chest like a knife.

She had fallen and been admitted to the hospital on that same day—the day of her miscarriage.

The baby she had worked so hard to conceive was gone at 9:30 that morning.

In an instant, tears welled up.

It had not been an easy pregnancy. To get pregnant, Haley had undergone numerous injections and taken innumerable drugs. She lost everything after falling for no apparent reason while she was less than three months pregnant.

Her body had never handled pregnancy well, and that miscarriage almost killed her.

Kieran had given her a gentle back rub while she lay in that chilly hospital bed, wallowing in sorrow. "Darling, don't be so upset," he said. “Perhaps it's for the best. Our careers are just getting started. He had stated, "It's really not the right time for a baby."

It was never about timing, she realized now. He already had a baby with someone else that day. And not just anybody…but Lydia.

He had never desired the inconvenience of what she had lost.

The phony certificate was returned by the clerk. It slipped from Haley’s grasp and hit the ground as her fingers grew limp.

Three years of love and devotion were turned into a cruel joke by those official-looking letters, which felt like a slap in the face.

The chilly breeze outside the office cleared her head but made her chest feel even colder.

"Ma’am, what Kieran did is unforgivable," Jude said, following with a worried expression on his face. “Do you really not want your granddad to handle this?”

Haley gave a gentle shake of her head. "No," she responded calmly, "Jude, tell my grandfather that before the end of this month I'll come home with my decision and formally take over the family business." The astonishment and grief in her gaze vanished, to be replaced by something colder and more determined.

Haley then called a cab and provided the driver Kieran’s company's address. Without waiting for Jude to say anything, she entered the cab and told the driver to go.

Kitty scowled and let out a chilly chuckle. "Have to do? Haley, I see this for what it is—you just want to make yourself important in this family." Haley gave a headshake. "The Kane family has ample resources. That's not how I have to assert myself. However, Rhett and I are now married. Our interests are intertwined. We rise and fall together. He puts in a lot of effort operating a large firm and handling crisis after crisis. It is my responsibility as his wife to ease his burden and ensure that everything is in order at home. I'm not targeting you or anyone else in this family with what I'm doing right now. I'm just doing as a wife ought to." Kitty’s neck tensed. "Don't make yourself out to be some kind of saint." Haley looked her in the eye. "Mrs. Fez, after all these years married to Mr. Jason Fez, haven't you ever wanted to do something for this family or for your sons?" Kitty was unprepared. Her face became stern. "Everything is available to the Fez. What can I do?” Haley gr

Neither of them saw the automobile arrive at their apartment complex. A breeze dispersed cherry blossoms from the courtyard trees as they stepped outside, the petals falling like snowflakes across their shoulders. Haley stood on her tiptoes and instinctively leaned into Rhett as she reached up to remove a petal from his hair. He seized her, and they found themselves sharing a gentle, deep kiss beneath the falling flowers, the heat of something new blending with the easy closeness of long love. The surroundings vanished from view. Neither saw the eyes peering through the tinted window or the brand-new luxury vehicle parked close by. Building a new life in Africa had brought Kieran dangerously close to suicide. He had made roughly $6 million, which was sufficient to pay off his debts and leave him with about $1 million. He registered a new business, purchased a new vehicle, and located the tech partners who had collaborated with him from the start. They would return to the intern

Fabian spoke in a stern tone. "You've only indulged yourself over the years, Jason. And Kitty, since the day you married into this family, your focus has been on your own comfort and freedom. You've never worked yourself to the bone like Rhett, thinking about the future of this family. You spent your early years fighting with Jason all the time, and then you launched yourself into the life of a wealthy socialite. “You resented this family while happily enjoying every privilege it gave you. You don't compare to my wife or your grandmother-in-law as a wife, but I kept quiet out of respect for the three sons you brought into this family. You ought to examine your own actions,” Fabian looked across to the twins. "Roy, Riven, you spent your early years at school and were younger than Rhett. I never pushed you the way I pushed Rhett because I think grandparents shouldn't meddle in children's upbringing. But starting today, I want you to pay attention to Haley and Rhett. Become self-suffic

"I would like to call a family meeting with everyone. However, our parents haven't even had a formal meeting yet. If I intervened like this and began cutting costs, wouldn't it lead to animosity within your family?" Rhett took a while to respond. "I believe it's a good place to start. Let everyone see who the true head of the household is right away.” Still uncomfortable, Haley paused. "But won't this make things even worse between your mother and me?" He spoke in a steady tone. "It's preferable that she knows right away that you're not someone to bully if a conflict is unavoidable. I'll always have your back, so don't worry." "But she's your mother," Haley whispered. “Would we appear unfilial as a result of this?” After pausing, Rhett said, "We're considering the family's long-term future. Even the greatest wealth will run out if this kind of unrestrained spending persists. This must take place. Do not be scared. Take the necessary action.” Her confidence increased with his unw

At last, Jason understood. He could tell that Rhett was no longer the same son who had quietly and uncomplainingly taken on everything. He was no longer the same. However, as a man, Jadon came to the realization that this was a good thing. Perhaps he wouldn't have let himself go, wasted his finest years, and ended up as an old leech living off his son's success if Kitty had handled the household financially instead of threatening divorce every other day, and if she had cared about his feelings the way Haley cared about Rhett’s. Jason coughed deeply and cleared his throat. "Rhett has a valid point. Your spending patterns have become excessive. We wouldn't be living this comfortably if Rhett hadn't been keeping this family together for all these years. Roy and Riven are mature men. They ought to pay attention to Rhett. They will benefit from some actual work experience; they may even learn how to relieve some of Rhett’s workload. I'm in favor of this. Let's take action.” Kitty betra

Haley had thrown on a light jacket and nothing else, assuming it was just the delivery. There was no time to conceal anything. She almost ran back inside, embarrassed and taken aback. Behind her, Rhett materialized. His face furrowed as he saw his folks at the entrance. "What are you doing here?" Jason and Kitty awoke from their reverie. Jason raised the containers he was holding. "I brought lunch to your office, son. Your mother and I decided to bring it here since Theo mentioned that you hadn't come in today.” Seldom one to soften, Kitty forced a tight smile. “Yes, your father prepared your favorite meals: beef stew and omelette with cheese. I prepared some soup with chicken for you. You ought to give it a try. “ At the threshold, she hesitated. "May we come in?" They both glanced beyond Haley, staring at Rhett. Rhett remained silent. Rather, he grasped Haley’s hand and gazed at her. "Are you okay with that? You make the decision.” Even when Kitty’s face darkened, she remaine

Then Haley heard a voice she recognized. "I apologize, Lydia," Kieran murmured in a quiet, personal voice. "Haley’s appearance surprised me too. With a fixed smile, Haley looked around before calmly focusing on Kieran. "You still weren't home," she remarked softly. "I wanted to check in. Are you finished now? Haley’s smile froze as she brought out a full pink princess dress. This outfit was obviously appropriate for Riley in terms of color, size, and style. Haley felt as though someone had squeezed her heart hard. Her heart began to race to its highest point as she locked her gaze on the outfit. "
