"Gavin, you've already faked your death. Why are you still keeping Emily around? Don't tell me you've actually fallen for her?"

"Don't be ridiculous. The accident left me sterile. If she weren't carrying my child, I would've kicked her to the curb a long time ago.

"Charlotte, don't worry. She's just a walking incubator. Once she gives birth, the baby will be yours on paper. In my heart, there's only ever been you."

Charlotte Evans blushed, playfully thumping Gavin Holt's chest before hesitantly asking, "But… what about your brother? Do you really think you can keep this from your parents?"

He was silent for a long moment, then let out a heavy sigh.

"We have to try. Dad and Mom always loved Sebastian best. They were going to leave the entire family fortune to him. If I hadn't made a move first, then…"

The bouquet of flowers I was carrying froze in my hands. The vase slipped from my grasp and shattered on the floor.

So… the one who died in that car crash wasn't Gavin at all. It was his brother, Sebastian Holt!

"Emily? What are you doing up?" Gavin—no, "Sebastian"—rushed out, his face sharp with panic.

"The flowers by Gavin's memorial had wilted. I was just coming to replace them." I forced down my shock, bent to pick up the shards, and tried to keep my voice steady.

"You're sure you didn't hear anything?"

"Positive. I'd just reached the doorway when I dropped the tray."

Relief flickered across his face, though his tone was still impatient.

"Before Gavin passed, he said that even though his heart belonged to Charlotte, you were pregnant, so we owe you some consideration. Next time, let the servants handle this. Go back to bed.

"And one more thing… stop coming to the room Charlotte and I share."

I muttered a quiet "okay," but pain was clawing at my chest.

The night before our wedding, he had held me like he never wanted to let me go.

And by the very next day, he had moved Charlotte into the Holt mansion.

Now I finally understood: he had come back using Sebastian's name just so he could be with her openly.

A dull ache throbbed low in my abdomen, and I dug my nails hard into my palm.

When I first heard the news of Gavin's death, I had defied my family and vowed to keep this baby. Now, this child felt like a cruel joke.

I was just a vessel he was using.

Five years of love, devotion, and time—all of it wasted.

"Sebastian, what are you doing chatting with a widow? Don't you find that bad luck?"

Charlotte appeared in a thin silk slip, leaning lazily against the doorframe, her gaze sharp with provocation.

"Can't wait anymore? Tonight, I'll give you everything you want."

Sebastian pulled her into his arms, his hand squeezing her waist with practiced intimacy.

My heart seized.

That was his habit—every time Gavin touched me, he would do the exact same thing.

The man tangled in sheets with Charlotte—if he wasn't Gavin, then who else could he be?

"Since Emily loves eavesdropping so much, let her listen to us."

The door swung wide, and soon the air filled with obscene gasps and the slick, shameful sounds of flesh against flesh.

Beneath him, Charlotte moved with wanton abandon, yet her eyes sought me out, taunting with every glance.

The flood of humiliation and anguish dragged me from my shock. I wanted to flee that disgraceful scene, but my legs refused to move.

Five years ago, Charlotte had gone abroad. Heartbroken, Gavin accepted my confession. From then on, he cherished me, swore to make me his wife.

But the day Charlotte returned, he abandoned me at the altar and rushed to the airport to meet her.

Not long after, came word of his death.

So these five years of love had been nothing more than a meticulously spun lie.

When their frenzied entanglement finally ended, the two lay entwined, bare and breathless.

"Haven't seen enough yet? Sebastian and I need to rest."

By then, my face was streaked with tears.

Back in my room, I picked up my phone and typed a single message: [Alex, I'm ready to leave with you.]

After the wedding, there was no trace of Gavin in the fitting room.I didn't give it another thought. My heart was already full with excitement as Alex and I began planning where to spend our honeymoon. He leaned lazily against my shoulder. "Wherever my lovely wife wants to go, that's where we'll go.""You and that sweet mouth of yours," I teased. After a bit of playful banter, I settled onto the sofa and scrolled through my phone. A breaking news alert popped up.Gavin's parents had drawn up a will in advance, declaring that after their passing, the entirety of the family fortune would be donated to charity. After his public disgrace at my wedding, Gavin had thrown Charlotte out of the Holt household.Unwilling to accept defeat, she later stormed into the Holt estate, claiming to be his wife and demanding her share of the inheritance. Security dragged her out in disgrace. Not long after, she vanished completely. Some said she fled abroad. Others whispered that Gavin's parents

Inside the Holt family's grand estate, Gavin knelt before his father."If you hadn't insisted that Sebastian pick you up from the airport, how could that accident have happened? And now you still dare to say your brother's death has nothing to do with you?"I favored Sebastian only because he had more talent for business than you. But you are still my son. I wouldn't sideline you. I never imagined you'd go so far, scheming against your own brother and causing his death. You unfilial child!"And when Emily finally carried your child, you dragged that shameless woman home and drove Emily into miscarriage. How can you face Emily? How can you face the rest of our family?"Perhaps this is simply the curse of our bloodline. Every cent of the family fortune will be donated after your mother and I are gone. We will never forgive you. From here on, you are on your own."Gavin remained silent, only lifting his head in anguish after his father left. His gaze fell on the mantle, where his own

I frowned. Before the wedding, I had already told Cordelia the truth about Gavin's identity. Even the surveillance footage… I managed to obtain it with her help.So now, in a moment of crisis, she could only think of coming to me.But I no longer bore that responsibility."There's no need. From now on, his life or death has nothing to do with me. Cordelia, you've worked hard these past few weeks, but I'll be getting married soon."Cordelia immediately understood the unspoken meaning: from this moment on, matters concerning the Holt family no longer required my attention. After hanging up, I finally noticed the headline blazing across the trending list online.[The Holt family's eldest son rises from the dead—cancels wedding on the spot after learning his ex-wife miscarried.]The accompanying video showed Charlotte, her makeup streaked into a mess of tears, kneeling on the floor in desperation, begging Gavin to finish the ceremony. But he shoved her aside without hesitation, ign

A haze clouded Gavin's eyes."You're talking nonsense again. You love me so much. How could you possibly bear to divorce me?"I let out a cold laugh."Before the accident, yes—I loved you so much I couldn't pull myself free. Even when I saw the body, I still foolishly dreamed that one day you'd return to me, safe and whole."Heaven may have spared you, and you did come back—but by then, there was no place left for me at your side."You chose to fake your own death just to give Charlotte a wedding. Now that I'm stepping aside, isn't this exactly what you wanted?"I reached for the suitcase behind me just as Alex's call came through."Emily, I've arrived at the hotel. I'm waiting for you at the entrance.""Alright, I'll be right there."With that, I cast Gavin one last indifferent glance and turned to leave. He rushed after me, grabbing my arm, his voice trembling."Emily, where are you going?""We're no longer connected in any way. I don't owe you an explanation. You should

"Sebastian" froze on stage, a flicker of panic flashing in his eyes before he quickly straightened, his tone righteous."Emily, what nonsense are you spouting? Who allowed you to attend the wedding?""I did. Let's see who dares to stop her." Mr. Holt's cane struck the floor with a sharp crack, silencing any further protest. The once lively banquet hall fell into a suffocating hush.I walked up the stage, plugged the USB drive into the projector, and the screen lit up. A familiar conversation echoed through the speakers—Gavin's voice intertwined with Charlotte's."Gavin, you've already faked your death. Why are you still keeping Emily around? When my relationship with Gavin was first made public, his parents were overjoyed. They were determined to see me as the Holt family's daughter-in-law.So when "Gavin" died, "Sebastian" insisted I remain in the Holt household with the child I carried, and his parents supported the decision. But now that the child was gone, I had no more ties to them and no reason to keep up the charade. The next morning, I woke to the sharp pounding of fists on my door."Emily, what is this nonsense? Just because I didn't go to your doctor's appointment with you, you let my brother's photo get into this state?" "Sebastian" yelled.I glanced toward the memorial set up in the living room. The flowers had long since wilted and rotted, and the photo on the mantel was coated in a thick layer of dust. There was a time when I would replace them with fresh bouquets every few days, carefully dusting so not a single speck of dirt would ever touch his photograph. But now, I no longer had the heart."I for
