“Don’t worry, dear. It’s just that time of the month again. He’ll be back soon.” Sadie persuaded, calming Kaylie, whose worry was written all over her face.

Kaylie furrowed her face, staring at Sadie’s face, confused. “That time of the month?” She repeated, asking, “what are you talking about, ma?”

“That’s his usual exit routine from the 20th to the month’s end,” Sadie said. “His whereabouts remain a mystery. The chairman’s last attempt to pry sparked a fierce confrontation.”

“But-” Kaylie tried to speak, but she bit back her words, not wanting her concern to seep into her tone. However, her emotions betrayed her, and her face revealed her distress when she discovered that Gage and Richard had left the house before dawn, while everyone else was still asleep.

“Your meal's ready. Go take your bath and join us,” Sadie encouraged, her smile spreading across her face. “Don’t fret about him. He’s not a child.”

Kaylie’s lips pursed, and she shook her head slightly. “Yes, ma’am, but…”

The third most luxurious car, after Bryson’s and Chairman Paul’s, pulled up to the Regency Hotel entrance, and the porters sprang into action, opening the doors. Sadie emerged from one side, while Kaylie stepped out from the other. Bryson hastened to greet them, a warm smile spreading across his face. “Welcome, Mom.” He said, his voice filled with affection.Kaylie stood beside Sadie, her expression decidedly unenthusiastic. “Good afternoon.” She replied, her tone subdued. Bryson’s face fell, and he looked at her with concern. “What’s wrong?” He asked, his gaze darting between Kaylie and Sadie. "Did something happen at home or on your way here?"“Not at all,” Sadie responded. “She’s just worried the chairman will blame her because Gage didn’t come with us.” “Don’t worry, queen. Dad won’t be angry at you. He knows it’s impossible to convince Gage. He only wants you to try,” Bryson consoled, his voice soothing. “He won’t be harsh on you, trust me.”“Do you think I should just go back?

Gage’s words hung in the air, filled with appreciation and admiration.“Gage…” Kaylie whispered, her eyes wide with shock as she met his gaze. Her mind was a jumble of emotions—surprise, wonder, and a dash of confusion. She hadn’t expected him to show up, and that he had made her thoughts swirl with possibilities. What was he doing? What lay behind this charming display of affection? Was this just a show, or was there something more to it?Gage’s eyes sparkled, his smile growing wider as he waved at her. “Come closer,” he said softly. Kaylie’s mind was still reeling, but her body seemed to move of its own accord. Her gaze dropped, and she took slow steps toward him, her heart pounding. When she finally stood before him, his gaze roamed over her face, drinking in every detail.“She’s the first and only person to ever accept me for who I am,” he said. “She’s the first whose presence makes a significant difference in my life. For this reason, she’s irreplaceable, and for many reasons,

She poured and he drank until the liter bottle was empty. She shook it, announcing, “that's it!”She set it down on the table with a thud and asked, “Should I grab another?” He raised an eyebrow. “Still asking? I thought we were making the most of this moment. What's changed? Are you getting tired?”She smiled brightly. “Of course not,” she replied, glancing to her right and waving until a server noticed her. She held up the empty bottle, signaling for another wine. The server arrived, pushing a wine cart. He opened a fresh bottle and placed it on the table before curtsying and departing. Kaylie batted her eyelashes at Gage. “A new one has arrived,” she announced, lifting the bottle and refilling his glass. “Carry on.”He lifted the glass, a faint smile creeping onto his face as he brought it to his lips. “The taste just keeps getting better.” He said. “Is smiling a sin?” She asked, and he glanced at her, his expression puzzled. “Yes,” she confirmed with a shrug, not letting him

“What’s the difference between here and the atrium?” Kaylie threw a question from behind, slowly taking her steps as she entered the atrium, lightly holding a glass of wine in her right hand.Gage glanced backward at her, and without saying a word, he escorted her with his eyes until she arrived before him.“You were angry because the host and your father lavished praise on Bryson, and left the hall all because you didn’t want to hear Bryson’s voice,” she let out, staring into his eyes. “Now, tell me. The hall is just a few steps away from here. Isn’t his voice reaching here?”“It does,” he answered in simplicity. He averted his gaze from her, staring at his front. “But I did the least I could. I can’t help hearing his voice since you insist I should say, but I’m not seeing his face,”“That’s the hardest to bear.”She shrugged, exhaling softly. She wore a smile and slightly bent her neck. “Anyway, thanks,” she appreciated. He gazed at her, and knowing what he would say, she instantly e

“Didn't I just say until we get home?” She said.He licked his lips and nodded. “Okay. Agreed,” He lengthened his hand, requesting, “can I have the wine, please?”“Yes. Of course.” She handed her the wine.He sipped it and stared at her from head to toe.“What's wrong?” She asked, but he said nothing. She checked herself to see if there was something on her body, but there was nothing, so she asked again. “What are you looking at?”He took his eyes off her. “Nothing,” he said. “Just want to say you look beautiful. I love how the dress looks on you.”“Finally. You admit it.” She said with the transparency of excitement.“Let's forget about it,” he let out. He stared away from her and sipped the wine again. “I just feel the need to say what's on my mind. Nothing more.”She nodded twice. “Okay.”“When is your birthday?” He asked.“Soon. next month. On the thirteen,” she responded instantly, as if she'd been waiting years for him to ask. “But why do you ask?”“Never mind,” he said, taking

Instead, she let out her worry. “How's he?” She asked. “Is he sleeping?”He nodded. “Yes,” he responded, and Kaylie instantly walked past him, but he stopped her. “He’s asked to be alone, and I think we should respect his wishes and let him have some quiet time.”Kaylie scoffed. “I appreciate your concern, but I think I can handle this. As his wife, let me take care of this.” She made a point and took another step forward, and as she laid her hand on the lever, his words stopped her again.“He said it was because of you.”She slowly turned around, her face furrowed, confused, and as her eyes landed on him, she asked, “What are you talking about?”Richard sighed. “I don't have all the details, but from what he told me, it sounds like he's really passionat

-Later in the evening-Kaylie entered the room with a plate of food cradled delicately in her hands as if it were a fragile treasure that might shatter at any moment. She approached the couch with measured steps and set the plate down on the table with precision.“What’s that?” Gage asked, taking his eyes off the book in his hand to look at her.“Your food. I doubt you’ve had anything since morning, so I prepared instant noodles,” she explained, beaming. “Wish I knew your favorite meal without asking. I would have surprised you with that.”“Isn’t preparing a bowl of noodles classified as babysitting?” He queried and before she could utter a word, he put the down beside him, adding, “my favorite meal is pounded yam with egusi, preferably with goat meat, but if not available, ponmo can take its place.”Kaylie scoffed, staring downward, but said nothing.“Mock me right to my face. -The next day-As Sadie stepped out of her room, her eyes met Kaylie's, who was emerging from the kitchen. Sadie rushed over, grasping Kaylie's arms. “Good morning, dear,” she exclaimed, her face radiant with a warm smile. “You left the event yesterday informing no one, and we got back late last night, so I couldn’t speak with you. How was your night?”Kaylie nodded sympathetically. “I was still awake when you got back, ma, but couldn’t come out because Gage was still wide awake,” she explained. “He's still upset that I took Bryson’s side at the event yesterday, so I was doing my best to apologize and make amends.”“I completely understand your approach, and I must say, I’m impressed,” Sadie praised. “You're navigating this situation skillfully, knowing exactly when to take a step back. If you had openly supported Gage yesterday, the chairman would likely have turned on Bryson,”Sadie leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. “He might even reconsider transferring Gage's share to Br

-Later in the day-Elizabeth hesitated in the doorway, her head peeking into the parlor like a cautious whisper. The room was empty, and with a quiet resolve, she slipped inside, the door creaking softly shut behind her. For a moment, she stood frozen, her thoughts swirling in a silent debate. Then, with a deep breath, she steeled herself and took her first step forward, her determination warring with the doubts that lingered in her mind.As she reached the door to Kaylie’s room, her hand rose, hesitating in mid-air. The distance between her fingers and the door handle grew, a chasm of uncertainty yawning open. The doubts won out, and her hand faltered, hovering just out of reach.‘Should I really do this?’ She wondered, her brow furrowing as doubt etched across her face. ‘Should I just resign as a price I’ll have to pay for my mistakes?’‘If I do, can I really hide from the consequences? Won’t she find me wherever I go if she’s determined?’ Her thoughts swirled, tangling in a kno

Gage’s mind had been boiling in a rage since they left Director Rachel’s house. “That lady must pay!” He growled, his words echoing for the second time - first, as they exited Director Rachel’s compound, and now, as they waited for the Garcia main gate to swing open.As the gates creaked open, Richard’s foot hovered over the accelerator, ready to move forward. But Kaylie’s stopped voice halted him. “Wait,” she said softly, her eyes locking onto Gage’s as she turned to face him. “Gage, I need you to take a step back. Elizabeth’s actions were directed at me, not you. Can you let me handle it?”“But-” his lips parted to protest, but Kaylie's raised finger silenced him, its gentle gesture imbued with an unspoken authority that only she seemed to wield. He swallowed his words, his eyes locked on hers as he waited for her to continue.“It’s connected to you, yes, but the device was planted on me,” Kaylie pointed out, her voice even and measured. “I’m asking you, please, to let me handle t

As Vera approached, Elizabeth’s gaze locked onto hers. “What do you mean, she shouldn’t give me the money?” Her voice rose, worry and frustration boiling over. “Why? Why shouldn’t she give me the money? Who are you to dictate?”Elizabeth reached out, her arm stretching toward Sadie, but Vera swiftly snatched the envelope. “What are you doing?!” Elizabeth’s voice escalated, her face twisted in frustration.Vera raised an eyebrow, her arms crossing over her chest as she leaned slightly to one side. That old man is desperate.”Director Rachel nodded in agreement. “His actions shouldn’t surprise you. You know how he operates. This isn’t his first time, but it should be his last,”She paused, taking a deep breath—a rare moment of respite from the verbal sparring matches with Chairman Paul. “We need to win and make him regret his actions. This must be his last attempt to destroy either you or her,” she emphasized, her right index finger wagging twice. “If this continues or happens one more time, we can’t predict the consequences...”She drummed her fingers on her palm, concern etched on her face. “We need to cut off his options and clarify that he’

With Sadie beside him, her legs crossed and hands folded across her chest, her right foot tapping out a slow rhythm. The creak of the door announced Kaylie’s arrival, and Sadie's gaze flicked up, her eyes narrowing slightly as she tracked Kaylie’s approach.“Why have you decided to starve us?” Chairman Paul’s question hung in the air, his voice low and even. Though his eyes remained fixed on some point ahead.Kaylie’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Hun?” She replied, her tone questioning.Chairman Paul’s gaze finally lifted to meet hers, his expression unchanging. “I’ve been informed you’ve forbidden the maids from preparing meals without your authorization.” He explained.“Yes, sir,” Kaylie confirmed, her face cast downward, bracing herself for a scolding.
