Chapter 3

Author: Little Hedgehog
Soon, the autopsy results came out.

"The deceased was around twenty-six years old. Judging by the wounds, the perpetrator hated him deeply, torturing him extensively before finally killing him with the bomb.

"Also, the victim only had one kidney. We'll probably be able to find a clue about that if we check hospital records."

At those words, the room fell silent.

Torture, explosion, and the lack of one kidney. Just one of these descriptions was alarming enough, but now they were all used to describe the same person.

While my heart no longer beat in my chest, my kidney was still working just fine—It had been donated to Lucas about a year ago, after all.

Back then, Lucas had suffered sudden kidney failure and desperately needed a transplant.

Coincidentally, my kidney was completely compatible with his, so I was practically forced into the operating room by Jamie as a result.

Now, as she cut open my body, she couldn't even recognize me.

After hearing the forensic doctor's report, Truman frowned and looked closely at my body. "Poor guy… Let's get this case solved quickly so he can rest in peace, yeah?"

Later, in the courtyard, Truman chatted with Jamie. "Jamie, couples always argue! If your husband's upset, just play nice with him, won't you?"

Jamie scoffed. "Like that would work. He'd only start causing more of a ruckus! Just today, he called me while I was at work and threatened me, so he's probably going to act dead the next time!"

What she didn't know was that I was truly dead. Somewhere in my heart, I wondered if she would feel any semblance of regret for what she was saying at that moment once she found out.

That being said, I truly didn't care anymore. All I wanted was to be able to leave her completely.

Seeing that she wasn't listening to reason, Truman could only sigh softly.

The police then started to investigate reports on missing persons and hospital records, and after a few days in the office, Truman compiled a list of missing men who seemed to fit the bill—one of whom was me.

However, Jamie only took one look at my document and placed it aside, before carefully inspecting the other documents in the list.

Right at that moment, her phone rang. It was a call from her childhood friend, Lucas.

"Jamie, when are you coming home? I couldn't find you when I went to see you today!"

The exhaustion on her face from staying up all night melted into a smile. "I'm a little busy now, so I'll go back and be with you later, okay?"

Lucas' voice was almost like a child whining. "But Jamieee, I want to find a horror movie! Without you, I'm too scared. You always used to stay by my side, remember?"

In response, not only did Jamie not get angry at him for bothering her during work, she even started to comfort him instead. "I'll bring you on a trip after I finish dealing with this case, alright?"

Seemingly carelessly, he asked, "Oh, what is it about?"

"A man was blasted to death by a bomb after being kidnapped, so we're checking his identity now. We suspect that he's crossed the perpetrator in some way, see?

"Anyway, I won't tell you much about the details. You'd be too scared to fall asleep, knowing you."

I couldn't help but scoff at the ironic scene that was playing in front of me. She was even worried about scaring Lucas, but wasn't willing to spend a few seconds thinking about my whereabouts.

She'd always treated him and me completely differently, after all.

After hanging up the phone, she continued going through the documents with Truman, finally finishing late into the night.

At the end, none of the files really seemed to fit the requirements, and the investigation came to a standstill. Everyone sat in silence, wondering what to do next.

Jamie stared at the corpse for a long time, before turning to Truman. "Send out the victim's description to the TV station, maybe someone hasn't reported a missing family member yet."

The others nodded and quickly contacted the local TV station, and within ten minutes, the information was broadcast across the city.

Not long after, Jamie's phone rang again. Then, I was lingering beside her in a haze, dull and unresponsive, until the voice on the line jolted me awake.

It was my father's voice, frantic.

"Jamie, Caleb has been missing for days! The description you released matches him perfectly!"

Jamie lingered for a long moment before finally rising, phone in hand, and walked toward the restroom.I breathed out in relief. If she learned the truth, maybe I'd be able to go free. The bridal shop's restroom wasn't gendered, so anyone could enter without any restrictions.Inside, Lucas's voice rang out loudly, "I only meant for Wilson to blow Caleb up and blow off some steam, but it didn't work! Caleb was too useless of a man to even get Jamie to care about him, so Wilson ended up kidnapping me instead, because I'm the one Jamie loves!"I described it really well for him too, what a shame…"Jamie froze in the doorway, standing there for a long moment before turning around and going back to the showroom. Then, shockingly, I realized that I was no longer bound to Jamie—I was now bound to Lucas instead. When he and his friends returned to the hall, Jamie was waiting by the gowns. She looked up at him with a smile, gesturing at one of them. "I want this one."Lucas blinked in s

A year later, Jamie was preparing for her wedding with Lucas. To be exact, it was Lucas who bustled about in excitement, while Jamie buried herself in case files at the station, working day and night.Truman grew uneasy seeing her like this and tried to persuade her to rest, but Jamie only shook her head and kept reading reports.Meanwhile, I continued being tethered to her side for an entire year.By day, she pretended to be fine. By night, she clutched my photo to her chest, sobbing, whispering over and over that she loved me, and that she was sorry. But I felt nothing, not even hatred or any grief. I just wanted to leave her, more than anything. No matter how I tried, though, I couldn't. Some unseen force bound me to her, and slowly despair took root. Perhaps I was cursed to be bound to her for the rest of our lives, and my suffering could only end once she was dead, too.Eventually, Truman reported Jamie's condition to the captain, and she was forced to go on break for a mon

Jamie's eyes were unfocused, as if she wasn't even processing what was going on in front of her. At that rate, she was going to beat Wilson to death. It was Lucas's shrill scream that finally snapped her back. "Jamie! There's only five minutes left on the bomb—forget him, save me!"Only then did Jamie stagger toward Lucas, fumbling to dismantle the device strapped to his chest. But then, Wilson sat up and gripped the remote controller in his hand, smiling as blood trickled from his lips. "Let's all go to hell together."At that split second, armed officers burst through the door, and Wilson was struck down on the spot.Other officers rushed forward, hands flying to detach the bomb from his body, and the moment Lucas was freed, he bolted for the warehouse door, running for his life.Truman grabbed Jamie's arm. "Jamie, move! We've got three minutes before it blows!"Most of the squad scattered, retreating fast. But Jamie stood rooted, staring at the bomb as if her soul had left he

Just then, Jamie's phone rang again. She answered, her voice hollow, almost detached. "Hello?"On the other end, a sharp, panicked scream pierced the line, "Jamie, help! Someone kidnapped me!"He's telling you to come here, Jamie! I've got a bomb strapped to my body, so come save me!"It was Lucas.Jamie froze for a moment, then rushed out of the morgue. "Get a team together, we're going to save a hostage! Wilson's at it again!"When Lucas overheard her giving orders, however, he cried frantically, "No, you have to come alone, Jamie! The kidnapper said if you bring anyone, he'll blow me up! I'm scared!"And so, Jamie got in a car and headed to the address that Lucas had told her about, while the other police followed from a distance to prevent any accidents.I sat silently beside her in the passenger seat, invisible to her eyes. Her face was completely expressionless, showing nothing.Rather, it seemed like it was drained of everything, like a stagnant pool. She moved purely o

Tears streamed down my face nonstop. In that moment, regret consumed me.I regretted meeting Jamie, regretted everything that happened, and most of all, that I quarreled with my father just before my death. All because we'd been dating for years, and Jamie still refused to get married to me.My father advised me to break up with her, and we had a giant argument over it.They had never meant me any harm, yet I was intent on pushing myself into the flaming pit.Seeing my parents hunched backs disappeared into the distance, bitterness consumed me. I hated Jamie, I hated Wilson, and most of all, I hated myself. After closing the door, Jamie seemed to contemplate for a moment, brows furrowed, before calling my number again. Naturally, it didn't go through, so she sent me a voicemail instead."Caleb, stop being such a child! Do you know what your parents are going through because of you? Where's your conscience?"Then, she hung up and stormed to the police station without any hesita

Truman took the address and headed straight for the place where Wilson was supposed to be.It was a simple urban village, but the moment I saw it, my entire soul started to tremble uncontrollably. This was where Wilson had first taken me, where I endured inhumane torture as he demanded that I reveal Jamie's whereabouts, but I refused to say a word. In the end, he strapped a bomb to my body and dragged me to that abandoned warehouse in the suburbs. They arrived at one of the houses, and kicked the door open once they confirmed that no one was inside.I followed them in. Wilson had long since destroyed any trace of my suffering here, so not a single clue remained. As Jamie and Truman searched through the building, I finally spotted a button, one from my shirt. If Jamie noticed it, she would be able to confirm that there was foul play afoot at last.I struggled desperately, trying to draw their attention, but it was all useless. They didn't see it, and eventually walked out of the
