Axel’s pov

I paced the hallway of the hospital, hands balled into fists in an effort to keep myself distracted. It smelled strongly of antiseptic and herbs; a combination which only made my wolf more agitated. I freaking hated hospitals. Hated the feeling of helplessness that came with being forced to wait.

Lysander, Alaric and Kai were seated on a bench not far off from where I was pacing, looking almost as impatient as I felt. Karla was behind one of those doors with a healer, going through another session of whatever therapy they were doing trying to get her back healthy and sane, while we all sat around seemingly waiting.

I sighed loudly and ran a hand through my dark hair. “This is taking forever.”

Lysander let out an exasperated noise and rolled his amber eyes. “It’s physical therapy, Axel, not something she can just get up and do in a day.”

“I know that,” I muttered, annoyed. “I just hate sitting around doing nothing.”

Kai smirked. “Then sit down instead of walking in circles l

Kayla’s povI sat on the edge of the bed, my legs tingling under the weight of the blanket, and watched while she fluffed my pillows and took my pulse. I wasn’t really looking at her. My thoughts had been preoccupied by things I’d forced myself to forget, but now they came back.At least I was done with those exercises and I was glad it was supposed to give me back sensations to my feet. At least it was beginning to work.Soon, the door clacked open.I turned my head and there she was – the mother of the quadruplets. The mother of my so-called mates. She smiled at me as if we were old friends, as if I had any interest in her being there in the first place. I forced a smile back, but it wasn’t real. The kind that crinkles your face and sparkles in your eyes but it was very fake. I just wanted her to leave me alone. It had been a long while since I had seen her or even talked to her and it was something I actually liked. I just loved staying on my air but instead I kept having visitors

Axel’s povThe air in the hospital felt stifling. I needed a drink myself after Mother’s sermon and i needed to be somewhere else, so when I sighed and announced to my brothers that I was heading down to the bar, Kai and Lysander answered with identical scowls of agreement. “Yeah, anything to get our minds off all this madness.” Lysander ran a hand through his hair.Alaric didn’t say much, but he followed. That was Alaric’s word for okay.We left the hospital without speaking again and headed straight to one of the bars on the outer limits of the pack’s territory. It was a place we rarely went, mostly because it was filled with warriors, traders, and occasional troublemakers—hardly the sort of place princes should be seen frequenting. But that day I didn’t care.As soon as we stepped inside, waves of alcohol and stale sweat hit me full force. The room was dimly lit and packed with voices shouting over each other, drunken laughter too jarring to sound genuine, an occasional wolf growl

Karla’s povAlaric immediately knew the healer was not taking any of his bullshit and clamped his mouth shut. Kai sighed. “Okay but we are just leaving our food here.”I shook my head with a smile. ‘‘I’ll eat. Just go guys.’’They hesitated, looking at each other until finally, they filed out. Axel was the last to leave and he cast me a long glance before he muttered, “So don’t get any ideas that this means you like Alaric more than me.”“Get out, Axel.” I laughed. He growled before leaning as he slammed the door behind him. With them gone, I sighed and leaned back in my pillow. The healer chuckled. "That bad?"“You have no idea.”“I don’t know about that but you do have to understand that we still need to continue with your therapy today. Oh and it’s going to be tough so I hope you are ready to handle it.”I nodded, glad that the room had become quiet at last. The healer helped me when I tried to step forward, but I couldn’t walk. My legs seemed as if they weren’t really mine. I cou

Karla’s povI lay in bed and looked at Kai, who sat on the edge of my bed with a plate of food. His calm eyes told me all I needed to know about him as he watched me with curiosity.“I can keep this here for you if you want,” he said. “You look like you need something to eat.”I didn’t know what to say to him but to give him an awkward smile. I couldn’t even say anything as I knew there would be a war soon enough when Alaric and Axel would show up.“Actually, there’s something I have to tell you,” I said as the door almost immediately reopened and before speaking even one word, two loud voices intruded.“I got here first, Alaric!” Axel’s voice rang out.“You did not! I was literally right behind you!” Alaric shot back.I sighed as they marched into the room. Each had a tray of food and both were so engrossed in their argument that neither saw Kai until they reached us.Then, both of them stopped dead. Their faces changed from annoyance to disbelief.“Kai?” Alaric said, blinking in sur

Karla’s povAxel leaned forward in his chair, his elbows on his knees as he studied me. There was something different in his sharp gaze today—less arrogance, more curiosity. I wasn’t sure what to make of that."I'll be honest." His voice was lower than usual. "I didn't like you at first."I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "No shit. You don’t need to repeat this over and over you know, we get it."“Oh I’m sorry. Did I hurt your feelings?” I could easily have taken that as a sarcastic joke but he was serious about his words. He really wanted to know if I was hurt and this was a shock to me which I shrugged about and decided to shrug.“No.” was all I could say.He smirked, but there was something softer in his expression. “But,” he continued, “I think I might be starting to like you.”I blinked at him, thrown off for a moment before letting out a sharp, humorless laugh. “Yeah, okay. Whatever you say, Axel.”I didn’t believe him for a second. These brothers were full of lies. I had already mad
