“Sir, I…” My hand trembled as I gripped the fencing foil.

My eyes darted to Alexei, silently begging him to take back his words. But no, he looked dead serious. Maybe even excited to see me fight Nathaniel.

An unfair match, obviously.

“Mr. Alexei, going against Anna would only damage my reputation,” Nathaniel said arrogantly. “I could defeat her in two minutes.”

“Two minutes?” Alexei scoffed. “You sparred with me for five.”

Nathaniel chuckled softly. “Well, I respect you, sir. I wouldn’t dare beat you in two minutes, would I?”

God, how could he say that to Alexei? He was so cocky!

But Alexei wasn’t fazed by the jab. He just chuckled, nodding a few times.

“Well then, two minutes should be more than enough for you to defeat Anastasia. Don’t hold back. I’m sure you can take her down.”

Nathaniel didn’t reply. He shot me a glance filled with irritation.

I knew it, I was going to be his punching bag. Two minutes might be short, but the humiliation would last longer. I could already imag

"Did you hear the rumor that Marva's gone missing?" Isolde whispered.I didn’t answer, but I already knew. The rumor said that Marva had tried to escape from Bastorin. Did they just let her go? That can’t be right. Someone like her could easily be found.Something’s not right. My gut tells me so.After everything that’s happened, I can’t shake the feeling that Alexei knows something—maybe he’s even involved.I know I should ignore it. I promised myself I would focus on my goal. But my conscience is screaming at me. What I hate most about myself is the kindness I inherited from my mother."Don't do anything stupid," Isolde warned, as if she could read my mind.I only stared at her in silence."Enough, Anna. If you start digging, everything will fall apart. Please, I’m begging you…” Isolde sighed. "It's better to close your eyes and ears. And your lips, too.”"Okay," I shrugged.I wasn’t planning to investigate anything. Not really. I'd rather confront Alexei directly; he must know the

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   45. The Shadow Behind Bastorin

ALEXEI POVI stared at the file on the table—the same one Anna had read—and secured it. I felt careless. Had Anna found out about the file I’d hidden? Where did she get this information?Of all the students I suspected, only one name came to mind: Marva.I’ve heard that her father’s in trouble. The question is, where does her loyalty lie? Most likely, Marva was trying to get help from Anna.I heard the front door being knocked on and saw a shadow behind it. The door opened, and my right hand walked in. Yuri placed a tray with a covered dish on the dining table. He bowed slightly when he faced me."Sir Alexei, your dinner," he said."Later. I don't have an appetite." My eyes stayed fixed on the file. "Leave, Yuri."Without saying much, Yuri started toward the door, but something suddenly crossed my mind.“Yuri, wait.” He stopped and turned around. "I need to speak with Marva. Bring her to my office after dinner.”"Yes, sir."I leaned back on the couch and exhaled a heavy breath. Me? Ti

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   44. What Power Demand

It feels like I’ve lost myself. I keep thinking about Alexei—his words, everything—and it only makes the pain in my chest worse. What I found in the library was Alexei’s plan to create a new ruler. But all those who failed before me must have disappointed him.Slowly, I will end up on that list too, because of my own foolishness. Why didn’t I stick to my original purpose for coming here? To win. Why did I let myself get distracted by other things and start doubting Alexei? My steps halted when Marva blocked my way as I exited the classroom. Her eyes were red, with dark circles underneath. Isolde, who had just come out of class, looked at her suspiciously.“Did you find it?” Marva asked.I glanced at Isolde, who was also looking at me. Her eyes seemed to say, ‘What did I miss? What have you done, Anna?’“Nothing,” I shook my head.“You’re lying,” Marva hissed.“Just stop bothering me.”I brushed past Marva, but she quickly followed. Anxiety lingered on her face, while Isolde walked on

  • Tied to the Ruthless Three   43. Alexei's Punishment

Alexei closed the safe and gestured for me to follow him. I assumed he was going to take me to his office. But I was wrong. Instead, Alexei led me out of the Bastorin building and across the quiet pedestrian walkway, which was lit by soft, yellow garden lamps. He took me to a part of Bastorin that I had never seen before. A black gate stood there, guarded. The guard opened it at once. I followed Alexei, full of questions.Where was he taking me?Ahead was a house—spooky from the outside, but well kept. It had double glass doors with white curtains. The windows were arched at the top with matching drapes.Alexei opened the door and waited for me to step inside. His scent filled the room the moment I entered. There was a living room that flowed into a sitting area, a dining room, a kitchen, and a bedroom. Was this where Alexei lived while at Bastorin?Silence fell for a moment.I watched as Alexei walked to the table by the couch and poured a drink into a glass. He turned, and our gazes

Before lunch, I went to the library with Isolde. We searched the shelf indicated on the note, but we didn't find anything. There were no books or papers—just an empty, dusty shelf.Isolde leaned her back against it and sighed in frustration. "I told you. You're just being messed with," she whispered irritably.I didn’t respond. Part of me refused to believe the girl—whoever she was—had lied. I continued to inspect every inch of the shelf obsessively, running my fingers along the wood and the gaps between the panels. Nothing. No paper, no clue—except..."Wait," I murmured.I squinted at the top corner of the shelf. There was a faint marking there. I turned on my phone's flashlight and brought it closer."What are you doing?" Isolde hissed, her voice low but sharp."Just a minute."Another set of letters and numbers appeared in the corner, faintly scratched into the wood: Z.333.32."Z.333.32," I read aloud.Isolde rolled her eyes. "Seriously, Anna? Don't play detective. Let's get out of

I rubbed a towel through my damp hair. Warmth seeped through me, along with a gnawing hunger. Swimming lessons with Isolde were exhausting, but I was improving little by little.Isolde was already in her pajamas with her hair wrapped in a towel. She yawned several times from her bed."I'm sleepy and starving. Is dinner still far off?" Isolde grumbled halfheartedly."Well, I can grab us some snacks from the pantry. Do you want some?" I offered."Yes, thank you."I stepped out of the room and glanced down the empty corridor. The other students hadn’t returned from downtown yet—they'd probably be back in another hour. I casually walked to the pantry, grabbed a few snacks, and two cans of juice. Just as I was about to head back, however, a girl appeared at the doorway, startling me."Anastasia?" she whispered, glancing left and right as if to make sure no one was watching. My guard went up immediately. "Yes? What is it?""I—I need your help."Okay, this was not something I expected. A ran
