NATHANIEL POV

Annoying!

Seeing Anna and Gabriel together makes me sick. What’s even more irritating is how Anna still treats me kindly. Does she think I’ll feel left out because Gabriel and I are still in a cold war?

Ha, I know they’re scheming. Anna’s using Gabriel’s feelings to win The Heir. As if they could easily get rid of me. Oh, no—definitely not!

Even if Anna and Gabriel are in this together, I won’t lose to either of them. I’ll prove that I’m the best, the one Alexei will choose. And once I become the leader, I’ll get rid of all of them.

I got out of the car and walked along the street with my friends. Once again, I saw Anna with Gabriel and her loyal handmaiden, Isolde.

My irritation boiled over.

“Let’s go to the movies, the new one just came out,” one of my friends suggested.

My eyes stayed fixed on Anna, Gabriel, and Isolde across the street as they entered a café.

“You guys go ahead,” I said.

“Come on, Nathaniel. It’ll be fun.”

I nodded. “You go first, I’ll catch up la

Nathaniel had passed the critical phase, though he still was not fully conscious. The doctors had put him under sedation, intentionally keeping him that way to reduce the pain. It was pointless for me to keep waiting for him at the hospital. Now I was back home, waiting for Katerina to arrive, my heart restless. I could not let her find out that I was doing business with Darius. The point was, if Katerina sensed that something was off, especially involving me, she would never stop digging. I had to act as if nothing was wrong. At precisely nine o’clock, Katerina arrived at the mansion. Isolde, Tisha, and I met her in the living room. The air was tense and stiff as I sat across from her. Isolde and Tisha took the seats to my left and right, both of them silent.Once the maid finished serving the refreshments and left the room, Katerina took a sip of her warm tea and set the cup down on the table. I drew a slow breath. Any second now, she would begin.“I never expected something like th

My feelings were still in chaos by the time we arrived at Isolde’s house. I barely listened to the conversation between my two friends. My mind was too busy trying to figure out where Alexei was. As the car passed through the gate, I noticed a black sedan parked in the yard.“Whose car is that?” Tisha asked.I did not even need to look at the license plate to know. “Gabe and Nate,” I murmured.“God,” Tisha scoffed softly. “They really can’t live without you, can they? You haven’t even been at Isolde’s for two days.”I only shrugged and sighed. The twins had an instinct for this, and they were probably here to take me home. Besides, Darius had made it clear that our relationship was strictly business. Anything beyond that did not concern him.Why should I stay at Isolde’s place anyway? At most, it was just to avoid stalkers who might try to get revenge on me. Fine. I would face them and find out who sent them.We got out of the car, and a maid immediately greeted us at the entrance.“M

ALEXEI POVI woke up with my head feeling lighter, the pain finally easing. It turned out Imelda had genuinely helped me; she hadn’t planned to quietly get rid of me after all. Slowly, I sat up on the bed and stepped out of the bedroom.Imelda was sitting casually on the couch, reading a book. My eyes drifted to the coffee table. There was a box of donuts and two cups of coffee already there.“You’re awake? How’s your headache?” Imelda asked.I simply nodded. “Better.”“I didn’t know what you’d want for dinner, so I just got donuts first. I know it’s sugar, but I think you need it.”A little awkwardly, I sat down and picked up a donut. “Thank you.”Silence stretched between us. I focused on each bite, the sugar melting on my tongue. My weak body slowly regained energy, and the coffee helped clear my thoughts.“This really is you, right, Alexei?” Imelda stared at me intently. “Or am I just hallucinating? You were supposed to be dead, in the sea.”When I woke up in bed with parts of my

ALEXEI POVBastorin. What little remains in my mind stirs old memories. Seeing the academy neglected, reduced to something like a haunted ruin, makes my chest ache. I do not even understand why I suddenly wanted to come here, even though there is no guarantee I will find any answers.I step inside and walk along the pedestrian path, taking in the garden that has turned into overgrown brush. My gaze drifts to the grimy windows, dull and sorrowful, and to the front doors standing wide open.Memories of my time studying here surface. Yet something feels off, as if there is more buried beneath those memories. My head refuses to cooperate, refuses to recall it all.I keep wandering through the academy, not thinking about any danger that might be lurking. Strangely, I feel safe here. Bastorin is the safest place for me. The place where I found…Love.“Love?” I murmur, confused.I step into the headmaster’s office and stop at the open doorway. The room is in chaos, ransacked brutally. Yet I

Isolde, Tisha, and I cautiously stepped out of the car. We scanned the abandoned agricultural airstrip—it was eerily quiet, completely unguarded. Tall weeds grew wild around neglected hangars, and the runway itself was cracked and riddled with holes.“Hm. Fancy meeting place,” Tisha muttered as she casually sat on the hood of the car. “Is Darius taking long? It’s pitch-dark out here.”Isolde, who had left the headlights on, shot her a look. “Sit in front of the lights, not on my hood.”I glanced at Tisha as she moved from the hood and slid into the back seat. She pulled out a pack of cigarettes from her jacket pocket, took one, lit it, and soon thin smoke filled the car. Isolde didn’t even bother complaining anymore.About ten minutes later, three cars arrived in a convoy and parked not far from us. I exchanged a look with Isolde and Tisha; both went on alert instantly. Their expressions were calm, but they were clearly ready for anything.“Great. He brought reinforcements,” Tisha sco

“This is the only solution,” Isolde said.Quickly, she shoved my suitcase into the trunk while Tisha practically pushed me into the car. Meanwhile, the twins looked clearly unwilling to let me go. I hated how tense the atmosphere had become, mainly because I had no voice anymore, as if all the problems had started because of me.“Anna will still be safe with us,” Nathaniel insisted.“In what way?” Isolde snapped. “She just terminated a few people who were following her!”“And only God knows what would’ve happened to Anna if she hadn’t been trained by Katerina all these years,” Tisha added. “Listen, Nate, these people will keep coming after Anna. She should stay with us for now.”“Until the business with Darius is finished,” Isolde added.Nathaniel clicked his tongue, clearly still disagreeing with Isolde and Tisha’s plan. The bottom line was, in the twins’ opinion, if I were away from them—Gabriel and Nathaniel—I wouldn’t be safe. But whether they admitted it or not, even staying clos
