PIPER’S POV

I was in bed now with Rowan, and honestly, I felt… safe. It wasn’t the kind of safety that came from love or trust .. at least not yet …but it was something. Just being near him made me feel like Ruben couldn’t reach me here. This house, this room, this bed …it was ours. And as long as Rowan was around, Ruben wouldn’t dare.

But that didn’t mean my mind was calm. My heart was pounding in a rhythm that didn’t make sense, shifting between relief and unease. I could hear Rowan moving beside me, his quiet breathing breaking the silence.

He’d tried asking what was wrong, but how could I tell him? How could I tell him that if I closed my eyes, I saw Ruben’s hand reaching for me… or that every time I felt someone’s touch, even his, my whole body froze?

So I told him nothing was wrong.

It was a lie. A small one. But one that kept me from unraveling in front of him.
