The private elevator didn't just climb; it clawed its way upward, tearing through forty floors of reinforced steel and concrete with a breathless, vertical violence that pressed Galen and Nurin’s backs hard against the brushed-steel walls. The digital floor counter glowed in a harsh, bleeding red, ticking upward with terrifying speed: 42... 45... 48...

Galen stood with his weight balanced evenly on the balls of his feet, his weapon held at a low, defensive ready. His dark eyes were fixed on the polished metal doors, a muscle ticking rhythmically in his clenched jaw. Every instinct honed by a lifetime of corporate warfare and underground survival screamed that the car was a coffin.

Beside him, Nurin didn't flinch. Her thumb rested lightly on the magazine release of her suppressed sidearm, her breathing slow and controlled. The adrenaline was a cold, sharp spike in her veins, but her mind was operating with terrifying clarity.

"They bypassed our primary lockdown protocols," Nurin said, her voice barely louder than the hum of the elevator's magnetic brakes. "Which means the override code didn't come from an outside hack. Someone inside our inner circle gave them the administrative root keys."

"Hendrata was just a proxy," Galen replied, his baritone voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated in the confined space. "Whoever is waiting for us at the top has been inside the architecture since the beginning."

Ding.

The elevator car slammed to an abrupt, jarring halt on the fiftieth floor. The pneumatic doors parted with a clean, smooth hiss, revealing the sprawling, glass-walled expanse of their private penthouse suite.

Except it no longer looked like a home.

The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering SCBD skyline had been blown out, leaving jagged teeth of glass framing the storm-ravaged night. Rain blew horizontally across the white marble floors, mixing with shattered pottery, overturned designer furniture, and the acrid, lingering scent of military-grade smoke grenades.

"Clear," Galen muttered, stepping out of the elevator first, his broad frame shielding Nurin as his gaze swept the shadows of the living area.

Nurin slipped out right behind him, her eyes darting to the structural pillars and the darkened hallways leading toward the master suite. "It's a trap. There are no thermal signatures on the floor sensors, which means they're using thermal-damping gear. They're waiting for us to walk into the center of the room."

"Then let's give them what they want," Galen said coldly.

He didn't head for the living room. Instead, he made a sharp pivot toward the sleek, minimalist kitchen alcove against the back wall, gesturing for Nurin to flank the opposite side of the reinforced structural pillar.

Before the echo of their footsteps could fade, the darkness near the floor-to-ceiling windows shifted. Three figures clad in matte-black tactical rigs materialized from the shadows, their suppressed carbines raised in a synchronized sweep.

They didn't waste time shouting warnings. They opened fire.

The air erupted into a deafening roar of supersonic lead chewing through marble and hardwood. Galen dropped into a low crouch, returning fire with three precise, double-tap shots that caught the lead operative square in the ballistic vest, spinning the man hard against the broken glass wall.

"Left flank!" Nurin yelled, diving behind the marble kitchen island as a burst of automatic fire shattered the granite countertop inches above her head.

She didn't hesitate. Pulling a heavy ceramic flash-bang grenade from her tactical belt, she pulled the pin and tossed it with an underhand arc across the open floor toward the second operative.

Clatter. Flash.

A blinding white explosion tore through the penthouse, followed instantly by a concussive boom that rattled the remaining windowpanes. The mercenary caught in the blast staggered backward, dropping his weapon with a cry of agony as his night-vision goggles fried in a spark of white-hot circuits.

Galen was already moving, closing the distance across the slick marble with terrifying speed. He slammed his forearm into the blinded operative's throat, driving him hard into the concrete pillar before sweeping his legs out from under him. The man hit the floor with a heavy thud and went limp.

The third operative raised his rifle, swinging the muzzle directly toward Galen's chest.

Bang.

Nurin’s weapon cracked once from behind the kitchen island. The round caught the third mercenary cleanly in the shoulder, dropping him to one knee. Galen didn't hesitate; he closed the remaining gap and delivered a ruthless, downward strike with the butt of his Glock, rendering the last attacker unconscious instantly.

Silence rushed back into the penthouse, broken only by the steady howling of the storm wind blowing through the shattered windows and the heavy breathing of the two survivors.

Galen stood over the fallen mercenaries, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter before turning back to Nurin. She stepped out from behind the kitchen counter, her pistol still raised, her expression completely unruffled.

"Standard Syndicate contractors," Nurin said, kicking aside a discarded tactical helmet with the toe of her boot. "They didn't come here to negotiate. They came to wipe us out."

"They wanted us to use the elevator so we'd enter the kill zone from the front," Galen said, walking slowly toward the master control panel embedded in the wall near the private panic room. "Which means they didn't expect us to bypass the lower sub-levels on foot."

"Which leaves the safehouse protocol," Nurin realized, her eyes widening slightly as she caught his drift. "If the penthouse was compromised, the primary escape route in the master suite..."

"...is the only way out," Galen finished, his face hardening.

He punched a rapid, twelve-digit biometric sequence into the wall panel, followed by a retinal scan. For a tense second, the screen flashed red, pulsing with an error warning.

"System override," Bagas’s frantic voice suddenly crackled through their encrypted earpieces, loud and breathless. "Boss! Are you guys copying? I'm picking up a massive data packet bouncing from the penthouse router right now! Someone is trying to upload the sovereign ledger core files directly to an offshore relay in Zurich!"

Galen’s eyes locked onto the wall panel as the error light suddenly shifted from red to a steady, glowing amber.

"They aren't just trying to kill us," Galen growled, a dark, lethal fury rising in his chest. "They're trying to steal the ledger from under our noses."

The heavy steel bulkhead of the panic room slid open with a deep, pneumatic groan, revealing a dark, descending stairwell illuminated by a single strip of emergency red lights.

Nurin stepped up beside Galen, her hand sliding smoothly back into her holster as she checked the charge on her tactical device. She looked up at him, her dark eyes flashing with an unyielding, razor-sharp defiance.

"Then let's go down into the dark, husband," Nurin whispered, her voice a promise of absolute retribution. "And show them what happens when you steal from a Prakoso."

Galen didn't smile. He simply reached out, his warm fingers gripping her hand tightly before letting go to lead the descent into the shadows below.

The deafening rattle of automatic gunfire tore through the cavernous server vault, chewing chunks of reinforced concrete from the pillars and sending a blizzard of pulverized dust into the air.Galen lunged to the left, his broad frame slamming into the heavy metal casing of a quantum server rack just as a high-velocity round sparked off the steel edge inches from his ear. His Glock was already up, clearing leather with practiced fluidity. He didn't hesitate, returning fire with two controlled, double-tap shots that tracked upward along the catwalk.

The rain had finally slowed to a stubborn, freezing mist by the time Galen and Nurin touched down on the private helipad of the Prakoso-Qistina tower. Their tactical gear was soaked through, smelling faintly of gunpowder and ozone, but neither of them broke stride as they bypassed the primary elevators and headed straight for the sub-level intelligence vault.Bagas was already waiting for them by the master console, a half-empty can of cold energy drink in one hand and a heavily modified decryption deck in the other. His eyes were bloodshot, glowing under the harsh fluorescent lights of the bunker.
