Chapter 3

Author: Shawney
The next day, when Celia had been in the cold long enough to lose nearly all feeling in her body, the door finally opened.

A bodyguard stood in the doorway, expressionless. "Mr. Keller says next time, the punishment won't be this light."

She braced herself against the wall and stumbled out, trembling so hard her teeth chattered.

There would not be a next time. Soon enough, she would make sure he was out of her life for good.

That evening, Roman's assistant delivered a gown and a set of jewelry, along with instructions that Celia was expected to attend a charity auction gala.

Celia went. She saw Lana the moment she reached the entrance. Lana was wearing a couture gown and a diamond necklace that Roman had won at auction last month for an eight-figure sum.

Celia stopped and looked at Roman. "She's here too. What do you still need me for?"

His expression barely shifted. "I wasn't planning on bringing her, but she's never been to something like this and wanted to come."

He paused, his tone careless. "Celia, don't be so petty."

A faint tremor ran through her.

It was not about being petty. It had simply never occurred to him what it would mean for his wife and his mistress to show up at the same event. People would talk, and they would laugh at her behind her back.

Roman walked in with Lana on his arm, and she clung to him with an adoring smile.

The whispers started almost immediately.

"Mr. Keller and his wife look wonderful together, don't they?"

"You've got the wrong woman. That one over there is Mrs. Keller. The one on his arm is just... the other woman."

The first speaker glanced awkwardly at Celia. "Well, look at the way Mr. Keller treats her. She's in designer originals, and Mrs. Keller's wearing complimentary pieces... You can't really blame me for mixing them up."

Celia's fingers curled into fists, her nails digging hard into her palms.

Once the auction began, Celia raised her paddle for a few pieces without much thought. Every time she made a bid, Lana topped her by exactly one dollar.

Quiet laughter rippled through the crowd.

"The wife getting bullied by the mistress right out in the open. That's a first."

Celia's expression did not change. She lifted her hand and made the signal for an unlimited bid, meaning she would take the piece at any price, no ceiling.

Lana's face went white. She tugged at Roman's sleeve, looking wounded. "Roman, I really love that piece..."

Roman frowned and turned to Celia. "Celia, let her have it."

"No. She can't place an unlimited bid, but I can, because I'm your wife and marital assets are shared property." Celia looked directly at Lana. "It doesn't matter how much you give her. She'll never outrank me."

Lana's eyes welled up instantly. She shot to her feet. "You..."

The next second, she covered her face with her hands and burst into tears. "You're right, you're his wife... I'm just the dirty little secret who had no business dreaming. Roman, let's just end this."

She turned and ran.

Roman's expression went rigid. He grabbed Celia's wrist, squeezing hard enough to bruise. "I told you I'd get tired of her eventually. Did you have to push her this far?"

Celia met his gaze evenly. "Whether she stays or goes has nothing to do with me."

His eyes went cold. He dropped her wrist and strode after Lana.

Celia stood alone in the middle of the room. The stares around her ranged from mocking to pitying.

She did not care. She would be gone soon enough.

The next morning, however, Celia was jolted awake by a news alert on her phone.

The headline read: [Breaking news! 999 intimate photos of Keller Corporation CEO's wife to be sold at a public auction through Kingsley's.]

Her blood ran cold. Those photos existed in only one person's possession.

Outside the door, Lana stood alone. A gust of cold wind swept past her, as if mocking how far she had fallen. She walked without direction. When she passed a fountain, she glanced down at her reflection in the water and nearly jumped out of her skin. A scream tore out of her before she could stop it. She clapped both hands over her face. The woman staring back at her from the surface was horrifying, and she could not believe it was herself.During her time in detention, there had been no time or energy for anything resembling self-care. Every day, before the old wounds could heal, new ones were added on top of them. Without proper treatment, they had festered and rotted. She had always been the kind of woman who cared about her appearance more than almost anything. She could not comprehend how she had ended up here.It was not just her own suffering. Her parents were in constant pain as well. While she was locked up, someone had shown her how Gerald and Patrice were doing. They w

"I wouldn't... I'd never do that. I just wanted her to apologize to you. If you want me to pay for what I did, I'll go. I'll do it."Roman scrambled to explain himself. He wanted to move closer to Celia but was held back by the fear in her eyes. He did not dare take a single step.Dominic's brows furrowed together. He rested a hand on Celia's back and said to her softly, "Don't worry. I won't give him another chance to hurt you."When he turned to Roman, his expression went cold."Roman, do you even believe what you're saying? If you really wanted to make amends, would you need Celia's permission to go do it? Or is the truth that you're too afraid?"Before Roman could argue, Dominic continued, "Whether you're willing or not doesn't matter. I'll send you there myself."The moment the words left his mouth, several bodyguards stepped forward. They bound Roman and hauled him toward a waiting car.Roman did not resist. His eyes stayed on Celia the entire time."Celia, the only reaso

The photos looped through his mind like a nightmare that would not end. Even with his eyes shut, the images kept playing behind his eyelids. After what felt like an eternity, the guilt crushed him flat. He began to apologize, over and over, to no one."I'm sorry, Celia..."No matter how many times he said it, the torment did not stop.Cold sweat soaked through his clothes. He fumbled blindly around the room, desperate for a way out.He found a bathroom eventually. The moment he stepped inside, all he could feel was how filthy he was.He turned the hot water up as high as it would go and scrubbed at his skin over and over, long past the point of reason. It was as though he were trying to strip off a layer of himself entirely."Celia, I'm not dirty. I'll never touch anyone but you again. I'm not dirty..."The words fell out of him in a vacant murmur. The ordeal ended at some point, though he could not say when. When Roman had finally exhausted himself, his eyes were hollow and

"I'm sorry, Celia. I really do love you. Everything that happened with Lana, I can explain all of it. I was deceived. She manipulated me. I've already made her pay. Please, don't be this cruel."Give me one more chance. I swear I'll never hurt you again. If I do, I'll walk away with nothing. No, forget that. I'll transfer everything I own into your name right now."Roman begged, his voice stripped of all pride. He picked up a shard of broken porcelain from the floor and pressed it against his own throat. Then he seized one of Celia's hands and forced it around his, making her the one holding the blade to his skin.A wild, desperate smile twisted across his face, bitter underneath it all. "Celia, if you hate me that much, then kill me. Anything is better than hearing you say no. I can't face a future without you."Take everything I have. I don't care. Just don't take yourself away from me. Punish me however you want. Lock me in the freezer. Throw me in a cell. Hit me, curse me, I'll

After hearing all of this, Celia sat still for a long time before a buried memory finally surfaced. Dominic had been there, in the background of her past, more than once. She had simply never thought of him as anything other than one of Roman's friends. Now, listening to everything Dominic had just said, she felt genuinely moved. At the same time, a quiet panic stirred inside her. She wondered if she really deserved love this sincere. She was not there yet. She did not love him that deeply. Her relationship with Roman had drained every last reserve of emotional energy she had, and it had left her second-guessing everything. She was terrified of giving all of herself again, only to be torn apart by someone new.She could not afford another six years.Dominic sensed the fragility in her. He reached over and took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers without a word. The warmth of his skin traveled into hers, and something in her chest thawed along with it.His voice was gentle.

Martin and Ruth were furious the moment they laid eyes on Roman. Neither of them bothered to hide it."Mr. Keller, you and our family are not the same kind of people. Go back to your privileged little world, where you can have as many women as you want and throw them away when you're bored. Our Celia is not your toy, and she is not your punching bag.""Our daughter was perfectly fine before she married you. Do you have any idea how much she suffered? How many times she was hurt? You had her thrown in a cell. You let her be abused over and over again. What did she ever do to deserve a man like you?"The more they spoke, the angrier they became. Tears streamed down their faces as they hit him, one blow after another.Roman stood with his head bowed and took every strike without resistance. The guilt was written all over him.Still, he could not stop himself from asking, "What about Dominic? He's the same kind of man I am. Same world, same money. Aren't you worried he'll turn out the
