Chapter 4

Author: Shawney
Celia's hands were shaking when she dialed Roman's number. Her voice came out raw. "The photos... Did you leak them?"

On the other end, Roman let out a cold laugh. "You liked placing unlimited bids, didn't you? If you don't want anyone else seeing those photos, then get over there and buy them back. One by one. Bid to your heart's content." His tone was cruel.

In the background, Lana's voice floated through, sweet and delicate. "Roman, is that Celia calling? I should go. I really shouldn't be here..."

"Don't be ridiculous." His voice softened instantly. A moment later, the unmistakable sound of a kiss came through the line. "I already stood up for you. Try walking away again and see what happens."

The call went dead at some point after that.

Celia felt the floor drop out from under her. She rushed to the auction venue. When she pushed through the doors, her entire body was trembling. The room was full of men, and her intimate photos were flashing on the large screen at the front.

There was one of her sleeping face. Roman had called it adorable and saved it.

There was one of her back as she stepped out of the bath. He had coaxed her into letting him take it, saying he wanted something to look at when he missed her.

There was one of her bare in bed, her skin covered in marks he had left. He had told her those were proof of how much he loved her.

The men in the room stared at Celia with undisguised hunger, and the murmuring cut into her like a blade.

"That body... Keller's a lucky man."

"Didn't he used to be crazy about his wife? Why's he putting her photos up for sale?"

"He's gotten bored, obviously. These trophy wives look good on the surface, but behind closed doors..."

Every word drove itself deeper. Celia thought of how ferociously possessive Roman used to be.

Years ago, on an island vacation, she had worn a backless dress and a man glanced at her one too many times.

Roman pulled her straight back to the hotel room and pinned her against the floor-to-ceiling windows, refusing to stop until she repeated after him—"Celia Vaughn belongs to Roman Keller."

Now, for the sake of another woman, he had taken her most private photos and handed them to a room full of strangers.

She bought them back one at a time. With every press of the bidding paddle, something inside her grew a little colder. By the time she bought the last one, the love she had carried for Roman was completely spent.

Her phone rang as she walked out of the auction house.

"Did you enjoy your unlimited bidding?" Roman's voice dripped with mockery.

Celia gripped the phone until her nails bit into her palm. "You did this without worrying that I'll divorce you?"

His tone was flat, almost bored, like an adult explaining something obvious to a child. "You can't divorce me, Celia. If I don't sign, the marriage doesn't end."

She said nothing.

He had forgotten. She already had a divorce agreement with his signature on it.

When she stayed silent, Roman's voice eased slightly. "Today was just a lesson."

There was a short pause. "I've told you before. Stop going after Lana, and I'll come back to this family when the time is right. Your birthday's coming up in a few days. I'll throw you a party to make it up to you."

Celia was about to say she did not need one, but the line was already dead.

Over the following days, Lana's social media posts appeared in Celia's feed like clockwork. The latest was a photo of Roman holding Lana on a yacht, captioned: [I wanted to see the ocean, so he bought me an island.]

Below that was: [He's allergic to cat hair, but he got me a Ragdoll anyway.]

There was also: [His entire camera roll is just me. Hehe.]

Before, something like this would have hurt Celia so badly she could not breathe. Now, she felt nothing at all.

Roman had been staying at Lana's place most nights. On the rare occasion he came home, he did not even notice that things had gone missing around the house. He probably would not notice if she disappeared either.

Outside the door, Lana stood alone. A gust of cold wind swept past her, as if mocking how far she had fallen. She walked without direction. When she passed a fountain, she glanced down at her reflection in the water and nearly jumped out of her skin. A scream tore out of her before she could stop it. She clapped both hands over her face. The woman staring back at her from the surface was horrifying, and she could not believe it was herself.During her time in detention, there had been no time or energy for anything resembling self-care. Every day, before the old wounds could heal, new ones were added on top of them. Without proper treatment, they had festered and rotted. She had always been the kind of woman who cared about her appearance more than almost anything. She could not comprehend how she had ended up here.It was not just her own suffering. Her parents were in constant pain as well. While she was locked up, someone had shown her how Gerald and Patrice were doing. They w

"I wouldn't... I'd never do that. I just wanted her to apologize to you. If you want me to pay for what I did, I'll go. I'll do it."Roman scrambled to explain himself. He wanted to move closer to Celia but was held back by the fear in her eyes. He did not dare take a single step.Dominic's brows furrowed together. He rested a hand on Celia's back and said to her softly, "Don't worry. I won't give him another chance to hurt you."When he turned to Roman, his expression went cold."Roman, do you even believe what you're saying? If you really wanted to make amends, would you need Celia's permission to go do it? Or is the truth that you're too afraid?"Before Roman could argue, Dominic continued, "Whether you're willing or not doesn't matter. I'll send you there myself."The moment the words left his mouth, several bodyguards stepped forward. They bound Roman and hauled him toward a waiting car.Roman did not resist. His eyes stayed on Celia the entire time."Celia, the only reaso

The photos looped through his mind like a nightmare that would not end. Even with his eyes shut, the images kept playing behind his eyelids. After what felt like an eternity, the guilt crushed him flat. He began to apologize, over and over, to no one."I'm sorry, Celia..."No matter how many times he said it, the torment did not stop.Cold sweat soaked through his clothes. He fumbled blindly around the room, desperate for a way out.He found a bathroom eventually. The moment he stepped inside, all he could feel was how filthy he was.He turned the hot water up as high as it would go and scrubbed at his skin over and over, long past the point of reason. It was as though he were trying to strip off a layer of himself entirely."Celia, I'm not dirty. I'll never touch anyone but you again. I'm not dirty..."The words fell out of him in a vacant murmur. The ordeal ended at some point, though he could not say when. When Roman had finally exhausted himself, his eyes were hollow and

"I'm sorry, Celia. I really do love you. Everything that happened with Lana, I can explain all of it. I was deceived. She manipulated me. I've already made her pay. Please, don't be this cruel."Give me one more chance. I swear I'll never hurt you again. If I do, I'll walk away with nothing. No, forget that. I'll transfer everything I own into your name right now."Roman begged, his voice stripped of all pride. He picked up a shard of broken porcelain from the floor and pressed it against his own throat. Then he seized one of Celia's hands and forced it around his, making her the one holding the blade to his skin.A wild, desperate smile twisted across his face, bitter underneath it all. "Celia, if you hate me that much, then kill me. Anything is better than hearing you say no. I can't face a future without you."Take everything I have. I don't care. Just don't take yourself away from me. Punish me however you want. Lock me in the freezer. Throw me in a cell. Hit me, curse me, I'll

After hearing all of this, Celia sat still for a long time before a buried memory finally surfaced. Dominic had been there, in the background of her past, more than once. She had simply never thought of him as anything other than one of Roman's friends. Now, listening to everything Dominic had just said, she felt genuinely moved. At the same time, a quiet panic stirred inside her. She wondered if she really deserved love this sincere. She was not there yet. She did not love him that deeply. Her relationship with Roman had drained every last reserve of emotional energy she had, and it had left her second-guessing everything. She was terrified of giving all of herself again, only to be torn apart by someone new.She could not afford another six years.Dominic sensed the fragility in her. He reached over and took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers without a word. The warmth of his skin traveled into hers, and something in her chest thawed along with it.His voice was gentle.

Martin and Ruth were furious the moment they laid eyes on Roman. Neither of them bothered to hide it."Mr. Keller, you and our family are not the same kind of people. Go back to your privileged little world, where you can have as many women as you want and throw them away when you're bored. Our Celia is not your toy, and she is not your punching bag.""Our daughter was perfectly fine before she married you. Do you have any idea how much she suffered? How many times she was hurt? You had her thrown in a cell. You let her be abused over and over again. What did she ever do to deserve a man like you?"The more they spoke, the angrier they became. Tears streamed down their faces as they hit him, one blow after another.Roman stood with his head bowed and took every strike without resistance. The guilt was written all over him.Still, he could not stop himself from asking, "What about Dominic? He's the same kind of man I am. Same world, same money. Aren't you worried he'll turn out the
