Chapter 6

Author: True Chord
Lucy borrowed a phone and ordered her subordinate to bring Steven to the city hall to register the marriage.

The subordinate hesitated. "Ms. Quinn, Mr. Zimmer's condition still isn't stable. I'm afraid he can't make it in person—"

Lucy's voice turned icy. "He's the one who drove Zack away. This mess is his doing. As long as he's still breathing, drag him here if you have to. He's signing those papers!"

By the time Lucy finished registering the marriage with a barely conscious Steven and somehow dealt with the reporters outside, she was completely drained.

Just then, her secretary called, panic evident in her voice. "Ms. Quinn! The news online is seriously damaging our company's reputation. Our stock price has dropped sharply. Many of our clients are demanding to terminate their contracts. How should we handle this?"

Lucy replied wearily, "Do I have to handle everything myself? Find whoever was responsible for those contracts. Do I have to spell it out every time?"

  • Till the Ninth Break Do Us Part   Chapter 8

Lucy looked so different from before that I almost didn't recognize her. Her face was pale and gaunt, and her frame so thin it looked fragile. It was only when she lifted her frail arms to stop me and called my name that I finally recognized this former wife of mine. When Lucy saw me, a faint glimmer appeared in her sunken eyes. "Zack, are you here to see me?"I shook my head, straightforward as always. The light in her eyes dimmed instantly, but she quickly recovered and looked at me anxiously. "Why are you at the hospital, then? Did you get sick? Are you alright?"I held up the medical report in my hand and pointed at it. "My wife is pregnant. I'm here with her for a checkup."Lucy froze for a moment, and then she teared up. "Zack, can you stay and talk to me for a bit?"As if afraid I'd refuse, she pleaded, "Just a little while."We sat down together, and for a moment, neither of us knew what to say. Silence stretched between us.She studied me for a long time before saying

Not hearing the answer she wanted, Lucy pleaded again, "Zack, can you forgive me? As long as you're willing to forgive me, I can propose ten times, a hundred times if I have to. I don't care."Her love had come far too late."Lucy, if this were the old me, maybe I would've been glad to hear you say that," I said. "But I can't anymore. Day after day of your games wore me down, and I don't have any love left to give you. We're never ever getting back together."She broke down completely, crying so hard she could barely breathe. It was obvious she truly regretted it, but it was too late.In the end, Lucy left, drained and defeated.I had just turned around when I bumped into my neighbor, Yvonne Brown. She didn't even flinch, smirking as if eavesdropping wasn't a problem. "I didn't think you were this irresistible, Chubs. Looks like your ex still hasn't gotten over you."Yvonne was my neighbor and my childhood friend. We had grown up together.Back in middle school, stress from sch

"Lucy, are you okay?" I asked, confused. Lucy gritted her teeth. "I agreed to your proposal yesterday! And now you're nowhere to be found! You know what? I might just change my mind and not marry you!"I couldn't help but laugh, cold and sharp. "Proposal? Did I propose? Lucy, you're still living in your own fantasy. I made it clear, didn't I? I already proposed to you nine times, so I don't owe you anything anymore."After our ninth divorce, I never planned to remarry you. Falling for you three years ago was the biggest mistake I ever made!"Lucy could hardly believe what she was hearing. Her hands shook so violently she nearly dropped the phone. "No… Zack, you're lying, right? We said this divorce was temporary."Her voice cracked. "The game is over, and we're getting married today! You're still upset about Steven, aren't you? I'll fire him right now. I swear I'll cut all ties with him. Come back to me, okay?""Lucy, why should I bend for you again and again?" I asked, my tone

Steven tossed the sheets onto the coffee table. They were the divorce certificates, numbered one through nine.He sneered. "Lucy, how can a man be so petty? He's keeping score with those divorce certificates. He's probably scheming to get back at you!"Lucy stared blankly at the divorce certificates.I quickly reached out to gather the certificates, but a drop of water landed on the back of my hand.Lucy was crying. Her tears fell freely as she choked out, "Zack… I'm sorry. I remember now. Give me another chance, okay? Tomorrow, we'll go to the city hall to get our marriage certificate. We won't divorce again, okay? Don't leave me."I was about to refuse. Before I could speak, Steven jumped in, flustered, trying to interrupt. "Lucy, why are you crying? This must be one of Zack's tricks—"She slapped him across the face before he could finish. "Shut up! Zack and I only divorced because of you! Now get out of my house!"Steven froze, completely taken aback by Lucy's sudden feroci

Lucy patted my shoulder as if to comfort me and said, "Zack, don't listen to their nonsense. Your place in my heart is irreplaceable. I won't let anyone who hurts you stay in the company."Tomorrow, I'll have Steve take over Henry's position. Oh, and I'll transfer those recent major deals to him as well. You can help him ease into things."I almost laughed from sheer anger. Lucy wanted to promote Steven from a personal assistant who knew nothing to a director. She wanted to put me in the line of fire, then quietly hand everything I'd worked for to him. She had it all figured out.I refused outright. "No way."In the past, I had indulged Lucy in everything to the point where I'd have gladly torn my heart out for her. Now, my refusal made her frown instantly, and her voice turned sharp. "Zack, the company doesn't need employees who are petty and selfish. The threat in her words was unmistakable.I nodded and replied calmly, "I understand. Then I resign."After all, I had already
