Chapter 5

Author: Joy
I didn't reply, merely blocking him and turning off my phone before leaning back on my seat and falling soundly asleep.

I dreamed of those dark days, when Elise had kicked the urn holding my mother's ashes. When its contents spilled on the ground, I freaked out and tried to scoop them up, only for her to crush my fingers beneath her feet.

I could only watch as Mom's ashes were blown away by the wind.

"Your mom's a dumb bitch," she said with a sneer. "I told her that I'd give Dad back to her if she jumped down from the building, and she believed me!"

I tried to tell Dad what kind of person Elise and her mom were. Before I could finish, though, he slapped me across the face, sending me falling to the ground.

"You disappoint me, Shana! How dare you spill your mother's ashes and try to frame Elise for it?"

After Dad left, Elise gave me a gleeful look. She yanked on my hair, scorching my face with a red-hot curling iron. She held it there until it hurt so bad that I couldn't even

  • Time to Wake Up   Chapter 8

I'd given him this ticket when we started dating, but I'd also said that this could only apply to smaller mistakes and not anything that was past my limits. Seemingly afraid that I'd reject him, he quickly fished out a velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a diamond ring with a bigger and shinier jewel than the one I'd thrown away. The crown of the ring was also in the shape of a violet. "Marry me, please, Shana? If you say yes, I promise I'll break it off cleanly with Elise!"Before I could react to his proposal, someone charged in from outside the door, snatched the ring, and stomped on it, grinding the heel of her foot on it. It turned out to be Elise—she must have stalked Harold all the way here. I watched as she slapped Harold across the face, putting all her strength into it. "I agreed to marry you, but you regretted it and left me alone at the wedding. And it was because you wanted to come to her!"How shameless can you be, Harold March? You said yours

  • Time to Wake Up   Chapter 7

I buried myself in my work. Cirro Village was hidden amidst the layered mountains, secluded from the real world, and hence was underdeveloped. Many villagers were afflicted with severe psychiatric illnesses because of their stressful lives, but had no idea how to improve their negative emotions. Even after I'd arrived at the village, they refused to consult me because they found voicing their thoughts and emotions out loud to be embarrassing. In order to change their minds, I visited them at their homes one by one and explained basic psychology to them. A month later, one of the villagers sought me out himself. More and more villagers came to trust me after that, and they fought to consult me, filling my days to the brim. Little did I know that Harold would manage to find me in such a secluded place. When I saw him, I thought that I'd mistaken him for someone else. It'd only been a month since I left, but he looked as weathered as a man in his 50s. He'd grown out a moustache

"Why, darling?" he asked, then continued when I remained silent, "I know! You're not satisfied with the venue decorations, are you? I'll have them change the flowers into your favorite violets right away!"The ring and wedding dress, too! I'll have them altered to fit you!"It turned out he'd known that I was unhappy all along, but he did nothing because he didn't care. Now that I'd run away, he was panicked, and he was trying to make me come back to him. Admittedly, Harold was a good actor. Even the uncontrollable tremor in his voice seemed to spell out his love for me. I interrupted him, scoffing. "Isn't this your and Elise's wedding? Are my presence and my preferences for venue decorations important?"Harold was silent for a while. Then, he raised his voice, sounding annoyed. "When are you going to stop making a fuss, Shana? We're finally getting married after being in love for eight years. I'd never marry another woman!"I know you have your qualms against Elise, but I'm

With shaking hands, I turned off the laptop and went to pack up my things. Only then did I realize that I'd bought most of my stuff in pairs. Only I used them, though; Harold never used the items I'd prepared for him. He was obviously cold to me, but I'd always ignored those subtle signs. I tossed all the matching couple stuff into the bin and packed everything else before texting my best friend, Jane Ramsey. "Do you want to meet up tonight?"I would be heading to the mountains as part of an aid group later, so I wouldn't get to see her for a long time. I decided that I should say goodbye to her properly. Soon after, Jane's reply came. A simple question mark, followed by a long message. "Aren't you busy organizing your wedding? Why are you suddenly free to meet up? Harold shouldn't have left everything to you, even though he's busy with work.""Where are you? I'll drive over now."We agreed to meet in a restaurant we frequented. The moment I walked in, she came forward and l

  • Time to Wake Up   Chapter 3

Before I knew it, Harold had left me alone by the roadside. "Elise wants nothing but to make it up to you, but you won't accept her goodwill. You're always wearing that frown on your face too. "Walk back home alone and reflect on your atrocious behavior along the way!" he said. And so I dragged my battered body back home. After what seemed like forever, I arrived at the front door, which I wouldn't open no matter what I tried. When the alarm blared loudly, Elise strutted over and opened the door, her head held high. She said, covering her mouth in a mockery of an apologetic expression, "Oh, it's you, Shana. I'm sorry. I couldn't remember the complicated passcode, so Harold changed it into something simpler."I nodded expressionlessly instead of breaking down like she'd wanted, so she pouted in disappointment. Harold, on the other hand, was satisfied with my reaction—he probably assumed that I'd taken his words to heart. He picked a fallen leaf from my hair, as gentle as he'd b

  • Time to Wake Up   Chapter 2

I sat on a bench in front of my apartment and waited for Mr. Perez's reply. Finally, when the sky had turned bright, he replied, "The position was filled after you rejected the offer. I did everything I could to get you a promotion, but you'll have to work in the mountains for one year as part of an aid group. The living conditions there are terrible. "Also, didn't you say that you're planning to settle down here after getting married? You should consider it properly.""I've thought it through, Mr. Perez. I'm willing to head to the mountains," I typed in my response to him. It went through right before my phone ran out of battery, and I heaved a sigh of relief. Throughout the past eight years, I'd always give myself excuses to forgive Harold no matter what he'd done. This time, though, I was truly exhausted. The moment I got ready to head home, a hand closed around my wrist and yanked. "Why didn't you tell me after you reached the apartment?"I looked up to see Harold's fur

  • Time to Wake Up   Chapter 1

Harold claimed he was busy, so I busied myself setting up our wedding venue alone until midnight. Over the years, he'd refused to marry me 108 times for various reasons—including but not limited to—his career that was just taking flight, not having a fitting suit, and ugly flowers at the venue. This time, it was because of my future assignment to Touden, the capital city. He didn't want to be in a long-distance relationship. And so I gave up on my bright future and organized the wedding by myself, down to the details. I assumed that he was picky because he wanted to have a perfect wedding, but now, I was watching camera footage of him kissing another woman passionately in bed. Elise leaned her head on his shoulder, scoffing. "What excuse are you planning to give her this time? I think you should just end this and marry her."Harold frowned. He grabbed her wandering hand and kissed it. "Don't make a fuss," he said. "You know that I proposed to her just to rile you up. I didn't
