I had already wiped away my makeup and hung the gown I was supposed to wear by his side back in the closet.

When Dario pushed the door open and saw me sitting there, a faint flicker of guilt crossed his face. "You're still up?"

"Today is our anniversary," I replied with no expression.

Dario fell silent for a long moment before setting a velvet jewelry box on the vanity table, revealing a striking emerald necklace inside.

"I saw it at the auction and thought it would look beautiful on you," he murmured, wrapping his arms around me from behind and brushing a soft kiss against my neck. "I'll make it up to you tomorrow night. I've already reserved the entire restaurant, so it can be just the two of us."

A familiar ache tightened in my chest, yet I didn't push him away. For ten years, whenever Dario made the effort to coax me, I had always chosen to forgive him.

But before his lips could touch my skin again, his private phone rang.

It was Scarlett again.

The moment Dario answered and heard the few frantic words on the other end, his face turned dark, and the hand resting on my waist instantly slipped away.

"Lock the doors and stay away from the windows. I'm on my way."

My heart sank. "What's wrong with her?"

"There's a suspicious vehicle idling outside her building, and someone tried to force the security keypad three times," he explained, already pulling on his coat.

"Where are her men?"

"I reassigned them to the docks tonight."

"Do you really have to go personally?" I couldn't stop myself from asking.

"If someone is scouting her location, I need to verify it myself."

"But today is our anniversary," I reminded him.

Dario frowned. "You have a full team protecting you at the estate. She has no one right now."

Without waiting for my reply, he left. I sat in the silent bedroom for hours, losing all track of time, until my phone finally buzzed with a short text from him. [Don't wait up.]

I stared at the screen and let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh.

It was nearly three in the morning when the heavy crunch of gravel signaled his return. Dario had come back, with Scarlett right beside him.

She was still in her evening dress, his suit jacket draped over her shivering shoulders, while two bodyguards carried her luggage into the foyer.

My face hardened. "What is she doing here?"

Dario tossed his car keys to the butler. "She's staying here tonight."

"The camera feeds at my apartment went down, and the backup generator failed," Scarlett quickly explained. "I was going to check into one of the family hotels—"

"Then go to the hotel," I interrupted coldly.

Silence fell over the hallway as Dario fixed me with a harsh, warning glare. But I refused to yield. "This is our home, Dario. She can go to a hotel or another safe house, but I will not allow her to stay here."

Scarlett's eyes welled with tears. "It's alright... I'll just go to the hotel."

She reached for her bag, but Dario's icy command instantly cut her off. "Put it down."

He turned his gaze back to me, his tone dropping to a dangerous whisper. "There is nowhere safer than this estate tonight. Eliana, you know exactly what she just went through. At a time like this, I expect you to show at least a bit of empathy."

Refusing to argue any further, he turned to the butler. "Prepare the guest suite on the east wing."

My chest constricted. "Not there!"

That wing housed my father's original logbooks, nautical maps, and private archives, which I treasured ‌above all else. Because of their sentimental value, it was the most heavily secured room in the mansion.

Years ago, when Dario personally upgraded the locks, he had promised me, "This space is yours alone. No one will ever touch it."

Scarlett spoke up. "Is that where your father's things are kept?"

I froze, wondering how she knew. Noticing my sharp glance, she hastily added, "Dario mentioned it to me before."

Dario, having completely lost his temper, cut in. "It's only for one night. Nobody is going to touch your things."

Ignoring my stance, he signaled the guard to unlock the door. As Scarlett brushed past me, a smile flashed across her lips. "Thank you, Eliana. I'll be very careful."

I stood frozen as the sanctuary that was supposed to be mine alone opened for another woman. A dull, hollow numbness washed over me.

It doesn't matter anymore.

Just four more days, and I would never have to endure this again.

The moment I stepped out of the harbor, Scarlett blocked my path. She looked shockingly gaunt, her clothes hanging loosely on her frame."Eliana, give me five minutes."I came to a stop. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal the brass nameplate that had fallen off my father's model ship."They found it while restoring the vessel. I never dared to give it to you until now."When I didn't reach out for it, Scarlett's eyes quickly welled up with tears."Dario hasn't seen me in six months. I was removed from the core operational team, and the other four families refuse to let me participate in formal negotiations ever again."My expression remained calm. "None of that has anything to do with me.""I know." She lowered her head, taking a long moment to compose herself before speaking. "I admit it. I fired that shot on purpose."I wasn't surprised. "I know."Scarlett lifted her tear-streaked face.I looked her dead in the eye. "Your marksmanshi

Over the following days, he managed the family's business remotely while trying every possible way to get me to sit down and talk with him.Every day, gifts arrived for me ranging from exquisite, rare Ecuadorian roses to priceless handcrafted art pieces. Later on, I began receiving small trinkets and toys I had loved as a child, a continuous stream that went on for an entire month.Eventually, I officially secured a legal shipping partnership route running from Quebec to Northern Europe. On the day of the contract signing, the partner hosted a celebratory dinner. As I stepped out of the hotel, I spotted Dario once again. He stood at the back of the crowd, waiting until everyone else had dispersed before walking over."Congratulations."I gave a nod. "Thank you."He handed me a large envelope.Inside lay the permanent title deeds to the old shipyard, the ownership certificates for all of my father's private archives, and an official statement of liability issued by the Falcone fa

By now, I had successfully finalized an independent shipping contract at a small harbor in Quebec. When I stepped out of the office, snow was falling softly, and a black sedan was parked along the curb.Dario was standing by the vehicle. He had grown noticeably thinner, wearing only a leather jacket, without a bodyguard in sight. He looked starkly different from the solemn, imposing Don he usually was.The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. "Eliana."I came to a stop, my face composed."How did you find me?"His dry, cracked lips curved into a sudden smile—a look of relief at finally finding me."It took me two months," he rasped, swallowing hard before continuing. "You switched ports three times and used your father's old connections. I almost thought you had completely vanished."I said nothing.Dario reached into the car and pulled out a wooden box. When he opened the lid, inside lay the scale model ship Scarlett had shot through. The snapped keel had been pieced back toget

There were no cameras inside the east wing archive room itself, but the hallway camera had captured everything. At 5.42 a.m., Scarlett had walked out of the room. There wasn't a single trace of panic on her face, and her steps were calm and steady.Dario stared at the screen, all color draining from his face.Mike placed the estate's security log for that night onto the desk. "Before and after the gunshot, no strangers entered the east wing, and none of the perimeter alarms were triggered."Dario remained completely silent. Sitting across from him, Scarlett's eyes slowly welled up with tears. "I've already explained this to you, Dario. My apartment was targeted that night, and my nerves were completely shot."Dario lifted his eyes to meet hers. "You've been with me for eight years. You can hit a moving target from twenty meters away. That ship model was less than three meters away from you. Are you honestly telling me your shot strayed by accident?"Scarlett's face stiffened. "

"We're over?"He repeated the words in a low murmur, his fingers tightening around the slip of paper."Since when does she decide when we’re over?"He quickly dialed my number, only to hear the automated voice of an operator informing him that the line had been disconnected. The color finally drained from Dario's face. He immediately called his underboss, Mike."Go to the West Port shipyard, and bring Eliana back."Half an hour later, Mike called back, his tone nervous. "Don, the donna isn't here. The captain said she boarded a cargo vessel before dawn."Dario snapped upright. "Where did she go? Which route?""It wasn't a ship under Falcone's name. The vessel exited Sicilian-controlled waters last night, and its port of destination was altered at the last minute."A deadly silence settled over the living room."Find her," Dario commanded, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "Check the airports, the harbors, and every network in the family. Bring her back to me."Mik

Two documents lay flat on the mahogany table. Dario didn't bother beating around the bush."Sign them."I flipped through the pages. The moment my signature went on those lines, the accident would be officially classified as a minor rear-end collision. The family elders would never learn that Scarlett had intentionally ambushed the donna's car, allowing her to retain her seat as an official representative at the Five Families Summit.I slid the papers back across the table. "I'm not signing."Scarlett's eyes instantly welled up with tears as she stared at me. "Eliana, I know I ruined San Luca. But I've waited eight years for that seat! If word of this reaches the elders, they will never let me step inside that conference room again."Dario spoke up, too. "San Luca is already lost. Ruining the seat she spent eight years waiting for won't bring your project back. Besides, I will compensate you. South Port's shipping routes, two main warehouses, and a fully legitimate logistics fir
