Chapter 2

Author: CC
The fleeting warmth had long since vanished into smoke.

Ethan's voice carried anger now, his Alpha aura leaking out in suffocating waves. His pine-forest scent turned sharp and bitter with rage.

"Daniel is still just a pup!" he snapped.

"You're his... nanny. You failed to teach him properly—that's your screw-up. I'm already being generous by not holding you accountable for that, so what gives you the right to throw a tantrum?" he continued.

Nanny?

I laughed bitterly at the word.

Daniel's mother, Danielle Woods, was my adoptive sister.

Ethan and Danielle had been fated mates, and Ethan had loved Danielle with everything he had.

But their social positions were worlds apart.

Sure, Danielle was an Alpha's daughter, but Eclipse—my adoptive father's pack—was nothing more than a small pack compared to the great Silver Howl Pack.

Even so, Ethan Brooks had defied his pack elders' opposition and took Danielle as his Luna.

From that moment, Eclipse Pack transformed from an ordinary remote pack into a prestigious family overnight.

After becoming mates, they were inseparable, madly in love.

But fate is cruel.

Danielle died in childbirth.

Eclipse Pack, terrified of losing their newfound status, sent me—the foundling they'd picked up from the forest—as a replacement.

Ethan, on the other hand, loved Danielle too deeply to take another Luna, but his heart ached for the young pup, who had no one to care for him.

So the two packs negotiated a ten-year agreement, allowing me to stay at Silver Howl with the title of "Luna."

Though I was called Luna, Ethan and I never held a mating ceremony. We had no mate bond, which meant no recognition from the Moon Goddess.

My entire identity hung on nothing more than a piece of paper—an agreement between two packs.

When you really thought about it, I was still single. Ethan and I had no mate bond, and though I was called Luna, it was an empty title.

Ten years of my life, reduced to a few words on a contract. Ten years spent caring for Daniel, and for what?

I pulled myself from these thoughts and said calmly, "I'm not throwing a tantrum. The agreement has expired."

"If I stay at Silver Howl like this, it'll drag you and Danny down. People will talk."

Hearing my "explanation", Ethan's furrowed brow relaxed slightly, and his oppressive aura eased somewhat. Those sapphire eyes held a mixture of testing and questioning, though his tone had softened.

"Have my baby and I'll make it official. We can do the ceremony, write you into the pack lineage. Make it real this time...."

"No," I answered, my voice flat. "There's no need."

I was done being the unloved substitute.

Done destroying myself for people who couldn’t care less about me.

How could I bear to let my pup walk the same painful path?

I straightened my clothes and retrieved the tokens of Silver Howl's Luna status from my bedroom, along with the pack’s business and political documents.

"I've already organized all the pack's company accounts. The person taking over is one of Luna Danielle's trusted confidants—she'll handle all my duties."

"Danny's grown up now. He needs professional tutors. I don’t know enough—I was never able to teach him right."

With a sweep of his hand, Ethan sent everything flying.

Fury burned in those sapphire eyes as the papers and the ten-year agreement hit the ground with a crash, scattering like garbage.

He stepped on them without mercy.

"Amelia Clark, you're testing my patience," he said, his voice dangerously low, his alpha aura suffocating.

"It's your birthday," he added after a moment, his tone softening just slightly. "I'll overlook this... outburst. Take some time to think things through—you'll see reason soon enough."

With that, he left.

Slam—

The heavy door closed, separating us into two different worlds, leaving behind only the lingering scent of pine.

I looked up at the night sky, watching a tiny light grow more distant until it disappeared completely.

A hollow laugh escaped me.

That was the lantern they'd lit for my birthday—a prayer sent up to the Moon Goddess.

My birthday.

The bitter irony wasn't lost on me.

Today wasn't just the Full Moon Festival. In Ethan's mind, it was also the day I was born.

But the truth was far more calculated—today marked the anniversary of Ethan and Danielle's first meeting.

The night before I was sent to Silver Howl, Danielle's mother—my adoptive mother Beth—had found me. She made me memorize everything about Danielle Woods, to imitate her words and actions.

"Amy, you need to become Danielle for him. Eclipse Pack's survival depends on it. So does yours." Beth's voice cracked, but her eyes remained fierce.

Just as she'd predicted, Alpha Ethan—who paid attention to nothing else—had remembered my "birthday."

This was the one day each year I looked forward to, the only day I could feel a hint of familial warmth, briefly held in his thoughts.

But stolen things must eventually be returned.

As I sighed, sharp pain exploded across my forehead.

I looked up to see Daniel perched on the wall, triumphantly holding his slingshot.

"Keep refusing to leave and next time I won't miss. And it won't be a rock hitting your head—it'll be claws!"

He grinned, proud of his deadly aim.

I stared at his smug little face, and it felt like someone punched me in the gut.

He’d completely forgotten that I was the one who’d taught him everything—how to shoot, how to race, how to fight with his claws. I’d held his hands every step of the way.

All those years I'd poured into him. All those sleepless nights and patient lessons. And this was all I had to show for it.

Ten years later, and now this father and son… one treated me like I was nothing, and the other just wished I’d disappear.

The words hung in the air like a punch I didn't see coming."Prince? Prince Noah Bennett?"My throat went dry. The world tilted slightly.I'd known Noah wasn't ordinary. Anyone with half a brain could tell from the expensive watch, the way he moved like someone born into power. But this? The legendary Prince Noah Bennett. One step away from the Alpha King throne before he walked away from it all.My hands felt cold. I pressed them against my jeans, trying to ground myself. All those stories he'd told me over beers—the family drama, the power struggles. I'd thought it was just upper-tier pack politics. Now it all made sense."Alpha Ethan," Noah said, his voice cutting through my shock. Calm. Almost lazy."Amelia craves freedom. So why the hell are you trying to shove her back into that suffocating cage?"He tilted his head, green eyes sharp in the fading light. "You know damn well she wasn't happy those ten years."The words hit me like cold water.Wasn't happy. Was I?Ten years at Silv

I stared at Ethan standing there in his expensive suit, looking completely out of place in my garden."Come back to Silver Howl?" I let out a short laugh. "Daniel needs me? Really?"Ethan tugged at his collar, clearly uncomfortable. The damp air was getting to him.His sapphire eyes swept over me—the dirt under my nails, the mud streaked across my clothes and face."I know you're upset," he said, looking me up and down like I was something he'd scraped off his shoe. "But you don't need to live like this."His Alpha aura rolled off him—not a threat, just a reminder that he was used to people doing what he wanted."We lived together for ten years. If you want to come back, just say the word. I've kept the Luna position open for you."He spoke like he was doing me a massive favor. For someone like Ethan Brooks—born with everything, blessed by the Moon Goddess—bowing his head wasn't in his nature. The fact that he'd traveled all the way to this remote village was already the biggest conces

I took a deep breath. Earth and wildflowers—that's all I smelled. No carefully trimmed hedges, no imported roses. Just nature. After half a month on the road, I was finally home.I slowed the motorcycle as I reached the hillside overlooking the valley. The river curved through it like it always had, trees lining the banks. Smoke drifted up from a few chimneys in the village below.I climbed off and stretched, my legs stiff from the ride. My spine cracked as I rolled my shoulders. Mountains rose in the distance, trees thick everywhere I looked, sky wide open above me.Something in my chest loosened. Like I could finally breathe.I grabbed Snowball's ashes from the saddlebag—a small wooden box, light in my hands. All I had left of him.I stayed clear of Eclipse Pack and headed straight for the village near the woods where Beth had found me all those years ago. That's where my cabin was.The village sat quiet as I rode through. A few people waved from their porches. I waved back but didn'

"You think you can just bail on us?" Daniel snapped."I told you last time—this time I'll use my claw."That's when I noticed his right hand behind his back—already shifted into a claw. One I'd taught him to control."Go ahead and leave! But once you're gone, don't you dare come back!" he screamed. His clawed hand came at my face fast.I jerked my head to the side, throwing my arm up to block. Sharp pain ripped across my forearm—his claws tearing through fabric and skin. Deep red blood spread through my white sleeve. My grip on the motorcycle handle slipped.Crash—The bike tipped sideways. I couldn't catch it. We went down together, hitting the ground hard. The omegas and guards who'd been watching suddenly scrambled forward, their faces going pale.Daniel stood frozen. His eyes were locked on the blood streaming down my arm, his face going pale. His mouth opened, but no words came out.I didn't wait for them. I pushed away the omega trying to help me and grabbed the silver sword from

"Of course I like her!" Daniel shot back, his disgust plain as day.He let out a cold snort. "Don't think I'm stupid. You were jealous of my mom being Silver Howl's Luna. You did everything you could to steal my dad. That's why mom died—the betrayal pain killed her!""You're evil, and I'll never forgive you! Someday, I'm gonna make you pay for what you did to her!"His blue eyes blazed with that Alpha fury—same as Ethan's.When he moved, something red flashed on his chest—the Lunar Fang Pendant.I stared at it, feeling something twist in my chest.Daniel had always been a sickly pup. I'd tried everything—cooked every meal myself, studied nutrition, spent hours researching remedies. Nothing worked. That's when I found it buried in some ancient text—the Lunar Fang Pendant. Legend said it was blessed by the Moon Goddess, could strengthen even the weakest wolf. The materials were nearly impossible to find. Took me months, cost me every favor I had. "It's cold at night—don't catch a cold," I said to him quietly.I didn't want to argue with a pup, especially one I'd raised with my own hands. With that final warning, I turned and headed back to my bedroom. The next morning, Beth—my adoptive mother—showed up looking like she'd barely slept, practically jogging across the courtyard to catch me as I tried to leave."Mother," I greeted her.She ignored my greeting entirely. Instead, she cupped my hands in both of hers, her face going from hopeful to desperate in an instant. Her eyes brimmed with tears, begging me just like she had ten years ago."Amy, Danny's still small—he needs you," she began."Our pack needs Ethan's support. Your father, your brother—everyone depends on it. You can't just have a meltdown and bail on everyone."I finally couldn't take it anymore and cut her off."You talk and talk. But did you ever ask if I'm okay? Not once."Beth froze. We were interrupted by the sound of a car horn outside.Honk honk—The car horn
