Chapter 4

Author: Nine Fifteen
Eva slowly forced her eyes open.

Seeing it was me, she tried to smile, but a tear slipped down her cheek first. "Mom, is Dad saving another kid?"

I pulled her body into mine, trying to transfer every ounce of my body heat to her.

My throat was so tight I couldn't utter a word.

Eva went ahead and answered for Jordan. "Is that other kid… worse off than me?"

Her teeth were chattering violently from the cold, yet she was still trying to make excuses for him. "Dad isn't ignoring me. He's the captain. He has to save the people in the most danger first, right?"

My tears dropped onto the foil emergency blanket.

It seemed that those who were constantly pushed aside eventually learned to justify the favoritism on their own—just like I used to.

Derick and his crew hauled down the cutting gear.

As they slowly wedged the tree trunk away, Eva's body spasmed in agony, but her cries were nothing more than soft whimpers.

I covered her ears and kissed her freezing forehead over and over. "Almost done. I'm right here."

After they splinted her and secured her to the rig, they managed to hoist Eva up the cliff.

But when we reached the foot of the mountain, my heart sank all over again.

The parking area was completely desolate.

Every official rescue truck, ambulance, and medical team had been sent to the south side of Mount Sarthia on Jordan's orders.

The civilian team had to park their vehicles further out on the paved road, separated from us by a stretch of mountain road that the storm had turned into a muddy bog.

A regular car couldn't even make it through.

I called Jordan over and over, but he never answered.

I finally resorted to texting him. "We found Eva. She fell down the cliff and is in critical condition. I need an ambulance and med team right now."

A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.

It was just one cold, detached sentence. "Stop exaggerating her injuries to force a truck. Follow the on-site medics' instructions."

Raindrops splattered against the screen, blurring his words.

He must have forgotten there were no medics left on site. He had personally ordered the very last first aid kit hauled over to the south.

Derick caught sight of the message, and his face instantly hardened.

Wasting no time, he radioed a nearby tunnel construction crew.

Ten minutes later, an off-road utility truck caked in mud rumbled up.

The back seat was crammed with tools. There wasn't even enough space to lay a stretcher flat.

We had to lash a piece of plywood to the seats with climbing rope just to lay Eva down.

I squeezed into the narrow gap beside her, holding her close, feeling even colder than she was.

Lightning flared, and thunder cracked outside the window.

At that exact moment, Jordan and his team found Layla's daughter, Demi Barton.

The so-called missing child had been hiding in the equipment tent back at the camping site the whole time.

She had gotten into a spat with a friend, decided she didn't want to join the group activities, and crawled into the tent to snack.

When Jordan zipped the tent open, Demi was halfway through her second bag of chips.

She was clean, rosy-cheeked, and completely uninjured.

Seeing the dozens of rescue workers gathered around, she simply frowned in annoyance. "What took you guys so long?"

Jordan froze.

A split second later, Layla lunged forward and threw her arms around Demi, sobbing uncontrollably. "Demi, you scared me to death!"

She looked up at Jordan, her eyes brimming with sheer relief. "Jordan, thank you. I would have been completely lost without you."

Jordan didn't say a word.

He pulled out his phone and finally saw the 20-plus unread messages I'd sent.

The last one had been sent 40 minutes ago.

His expression dropped, and he immediately hit redial.

But I wasn't the one who answered.

Derick's voice came through, cold as ice. "Captain Reid, your daughter is already in the operating room."

The missing boy had nothing but a low-battery smartwatch.Under the pouring rain, the signal interference caused a positioning error of over two miles. The old systems could only display a broad, useless blur. The Golden Six-Hour System, however, calculated three high-probability grid coordinates.Jordan stood at the back of the line as an ordinary volunteer. After forfeiting his captain's badge, he volunteered for a transfer to a grassroots rescue station, starting over from the ground up by lugging equipment and coiling ropes. This time, he didn't question my calls, nor did he attempt to alter the route based on his own experience. From the initial report to the successful rescue, it took just 2 hours and 47 minutes. The boy's mother broke through the police tape, pulled her son into a frantic embrace, and thanked everyone through her tears.Jordan stood in the rain, watching the scene unfold for a long time.Once the operation wrapped up, he came to the tech center."Aman

The doctor quickly adjusted the settings on the device.A few seconds later, Eva's eyelashes fluttered. She looked around in confusion, as if touching a foreign world for the very first time.I held my breath and called out to her again, "Eva."Her head snapped up. Doubt filled her eyes first, followed by a torrent of tears."Mom?"The sound processed through the cochlear implant sounded different from normal hearing. Eva's pronunciation was a little slurred, too, but I heard it.I pulled her into a tight embrace. My tears fell uncontrollably into her hair."Mom, I hear you."She leaned against my shoulder, repeating it over and over, "I hear you, Mom."At the end of the hallway, Jordan took a tearful step forward. "Eva."Her body froze instantly. She didn't turn around.Assuming the volume was too low, Jordan raised his voice. "Eva, I'm right here."She squeezed my hand and whispered, "I hear him. I just don't want to answer."Jordan stopped a few feet away, tears finall

I rented a two-bedroom apartment in Lindale. It wasn't huge. The balcony barely fit a single desk.Yet the moment the keys hit my hand, I felt for the first time that this place truly belonged to Eva and me.Eva picked a soft shade of blue for her bedroom walls. She covered them in star decals, saying if her ears couldn't hear, she could still watch the stars while falling asleep.I set up my workspace on the balcony, hanging my old, worn-out maps back on the wall.Nobody complained that the maps ruined the decor. And nobody demanded that Eva give up her favorite colors for Demi.We finally didn't have to shrink ourselves for anyone. The day I walked back into the National Emergency Technology Center, dozens of former colleagues gathered around. Some called me Ms. Palmer; others used the codename I hadn't heard in years."Homing, welcome back."I thought I'd be thrilled, but when I finally sat down at the workstation, all I felt was a hollow sense of disorientation.Eight ye

Amanda's POVJordan showed up in Lindale anyway.During Eva's first hearing assessment, he stood outside the glass, watching us.Inside the exam room, the doctor stood behind Eva, ringing bells of different frequencies one after another. The crisp chiming cut through the glass, clear enough for anyone in the hallway to hear. But Eva kept her head down, completely focused on the building blocks in her hands, never once turning around. The doctor moved to her left side and clapped hard twice.Still, there was no reaction from Eva.I crouched in front of her and used the sign language I'd recently learned to tell her, "Don't be scared. It's okay if you can't hear. I'll help you learn, step by step."Eva understood, her eyes crinkling into a sweet smile.A second later, her gaze drifted past my shoulder toward the door.Jordan stood there in his search-and-rescue jacket, pressing his palm against the glass with bloodshot eyes. The smile on Eva's face vanished instantly. Third-Person POVLayla's face paled slightly. "I'm a mother, and I was terrified. GPS isn't always accurate. What if Demi had been taken by a stranger?"Demi, who was sitting on the couch unwrapping a piece of candy, pouted in annoyance at Layla's words."Mom knew I was in the equipment tent the whole time. She was the one who told me not to come out. She said that if you brought your team, it would prove that you cared about us the most."The living room fell dead silent.Layla lunged forward to clap a hand over Demi's mouth. "Demi, stop lying!""I'm not lying!"Demi wrenched herself free from her grasp. "You even said Mrs. Reid loses every single time."The light in Jordan's eyes grew colder by the second. He had known Layla for over a decade. In his eyes, she was a vulnerable, fragile widow raising a daughter on her own, so she needed extra care.It had never occurred to him that beneath all those tears lay such calculated, manipulative games."You used the lives of two

After her surgery, Eva was moved to the ICU.As the anesthesia faded, she opened her eyes, but she didn't react to any noise around her.Jordan stood by her bed, calling her name over and over, "Eva, I'm here. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I was late."Eva just stared at him blankly. She couldn't hear a single word of his overdue apologies. With bloodshot eyes, Jordan reached out to touch her.Eva flinched like she'd been struck and instinctively shrank toward me. She clutched my shirt and silently mouthed a question. "Did Dad find the more important kid?"Tears streamed down my face. I forced a smile and nodded.Eva smiled too.She reached for her neck, pulled off the empty red cord, and placed it on the nightstand. She didn't want it anymore. The promise she had cherished most turned out to be nothing more than a useless string. That night, I compiled all the evidence—the dispatch logs, the risk assessments, the command center recordings, and the distress call that was cut off.
