Chapter 1

At the gate to the cemetery, I felt a strong grip on my wrist again.

Noah Pratt stood before me with bloodshot eyes.

“Virginia, let’s talk this through.”

“We have nothing to talk about,” I said coldly as I wrenched my hand out of his grasp.

His fingers twitched in midair, but he finally let his hand drop.

“How dare you come back here, Virginia?”

Noah’s best friend, Sheldon Baker, furiously took a few steps forward.

“Don’t you think you’ve caused Noah enough harm? Are you here to make trouble again because you heard Noah is planning to get engaged to Yvonne? I’m begging you, let him go.”

I had no intention of getting caught in this argument. I angled my body away to leave.

But Sheldon lost his cool and reached out to block my way. He shoved me so hard that I fell to the ground.

My elbows and knees stung.

Seemingly at the same time, Noah took a subconscious step forward and reached out as if to help me up.

He frowned. There was a look of hurt in his eyes.

“Don’t touch me.” I pushed his hand away and levered myself off the ground.

Noah’s hand remained hanging midair. His face was as white as a sheet.

“Noah,” a gentle voice called.

I looked over and saw Yvonne Hastings walking over from the car.

At practically the same time, Noah took a step back and put more distance between us.

Then, he walked toward Yvonne and draped his coat over her shoulders.

“You shouldn’t be out here. It’s so cold, and you’re not in good health.”

He smoothed the coat over her shoulders in a well-practiced motion.

Yvonne easily melted into his touch.

“You pamper me too much. It’s better for my health if I walk around more. Besides, I missed you. I want to be with you.”

Yvonne’s face reddened as her gaze fell on me.

“You’re finally back, Ginny.”

I did not answer. I simply raised my hand to hail a cab.

As I opened the door, Noah called out worriedly, “Virginia!”

But I did not look back.

The car set off. Through the rearview mirror, I saw Noah stand in place with a complicated look in his eyes as he stared after me.

A bit into the drive, the cabdriver started excitedly, “Excuse me, miss. Was that man back there, Mr. Noah Pratt of Portdale?

“His and his fiancee’s love story has spread through the entire city. According to what they say, his ex-fiancee dumped him, and he nearly lost it. It was lucky that he met his current fiancee.”

The cabdriver sounded very emotional. “I wonder if the woman who left him at the altar feels any remorse.”

“She wouldn’t,” I said neutrally as I looked at the scenery flying past in the window.

“Don’t be so certain. You’re not her.”

I lowered my head. My fingertips brushed the line of skin where there used to be a tan line from a ring. My heart was completely calm.

I was right. She did not regret it.

As I looked at that patch of skin, memories flooded in.

Everyone thought Noah was the prince of Portdale, who was born with a silver spoon.

Little did they know that, in the summer of his eighth year, I saw him curled up beside a frozen trash can.

I had stood at the mouth of that alley with my feet seemingly glued to the ground.

In the next second, I rushed over and dragged him back home by his freezing wrist with no room for protest.

That night, I had given him all the food on my own plate.

He had kept his head down the whole time. When I watched him swallow, I finally saw how difficult things were for him.

After that, I found out that his parents had only married because of a business arrangement. They had no feelings for each other.

At three years old, he had been shunted over to his father, but he was completely ignored. Even his nanny treated him poorly.

From that day on, I kept walking past that fateful alley.

Noah was not great with words, but he would always quietly follow behind me. He walked me safely home every day.

In the past, Noah would unhesitatingly envelop Yvonne in his arms and patiently comfort her.But right then, he slapped her without any hesitation. He was shaking from the anger, and he had put his full strength into the slap. “You disappoint me, Yvonne.”Another palm print etched itself on Yvonne’s face. Her hair was a mess, and Yvonne dropped to her butt on the floor inelegantly. Then, she started cursing out Noah. “Do you think you’re all that? You were going to be engaged to Ginny, but you still kept messing around with me. You deserve to be played.”Noah had regained a bit of his cool. After all, he had spent many years with Yvonne and had feelings for her. However, Yvonne’s words reignited his temper. He grabbed Yvonne by the hair and smashed her head on the tabletop. Yvonne’s pretty face quickly became a bloody mess. She lost all energy to keep resisting Noah. She simply closed her eyes and lost consciousness. Noah quickly realized that Yvonne had died. He starte

However, I coldly said, “I don’t need your money.”Noah was suddenly enraged by this. He slammed a hand on the table. “Don’t pretend to be high and mighty, Virginia. Don’t think I don’t know what kind of life you’re living now. I am offering you sympathy.”Damon coldly stood before me like a shield. “Ginny said no. Didn’t you hear her?”Noah burst into hysterical laughter. I had never seen him lose his composure so completely before in all my life. He seemed like he had lost his mind. “Don’t you know what five million dollars would mean to you? Don’t you know what kind of life Virginia used to live? She used to be a pampered princess. Back in the day, five million dollars was nothing to her.“But her family went bankrupt years ago. This is money you’ll never see, even if you worked hard all your life.”At some point, Noah had learned to judge people based on looks. Just from what Damon wore, he determined that Damon was not successful. When it all came back down to it, eve

“If you had only given us the tiniest bit of help, my family wouldn’t have ended up this way!” Yvonne said. I looked at her calmly with emotionless eyes. It seemed that Yvonne could not stand my calmness. She picked up her coffee cup and was about to splash her drink on me. I did not allow that to happen. I slapped her right in the face. “Yvonne Hastings, my parents did not cause your parents’ downfall. However, you did cause everything that happened to me, and I will make you pay for it.”No one had ever dared to speak to Yvonne this way since she got together with Noah. For an instant, she was livid, and she scrambled up from the floor to hit me back. I did not hesitate to slap her again. I did not hold back at all, and her face soon reddened, showing the imprint of my palm. Yvonne looked at me with even more venom in her eyes. Suddenly, though, she went numb and weak. She covered her head and rolled around on the floor. “Don’t hit me! Please don’t hit me! Ginny,

  • To Live In Our Separate Worlds   Chapter 6

Noah did not expect me to slap him. Noah had always been a domineering person. He never asked for my opinion and always forced his edicts on me. I could see the hurt in his eyes. But none of that mattered to me. It was exactly this hurt that I planned to use against him. Damon knew my plan, so he said exceptionally carelessly, “Well, what’s it to you if my wife is willing to live the hard life with me?”Noah looked at me in disbelief. To his mind, I was a spoiled and pampered brat. There was no way I would suffer such a difficult life with a poor and powerless man. Noah’s lower lip trembled as he asked, “Ginny?”But I was unwilling to say even one word to him. I opened the door and said, “Please leave, Mr. Pratt.”It was not surprising that Noah had been able to find me. He had a vast network and resources, so it was child’s play.In any case, I wanted to win his sympathy. If Noah saw me living a life where I did not have to worry about food or a roof over my head, then

Even though I was still confused, I kept investigating. That was how I learned that there was another layer to Noah’s abduction. Yvonne was not even the person who had saved him. Back in the day, Yvonne had pretended to be so penniless that she could not even afford food. She had done so just to get close to me. Yvonne herself was the heiress of a wealthy family. However, her family’s company had failed to keep up with the times and had gone bankrupt. Her parents had gone all over to ask for help and had even come to us. But they were rejected. Yvonne’s father could not handle the reality and fell into despondency. He kept sleeping around. Yvonne’s mother could not deal with her husband’s infidelity and committed suicide in front of Yvonne. Thus, Yvonne started to hate my family. After I finished going through this information, I could not stop myself from crying. I had thought all of this had been an accident. But it could not be denied that I had indirectly caused m

I showed off the wedding ring in my hand and smiled at him sweetly.“That’s right.”Noah seemed struck by my smile. His motions were haphazard as he reached out to grab my hand. I avoided him. He looked at his empty hand in a daze and asked softly, “Are you lying to me, Virginia? Don’t you love me?”I did not know how Noah had the nerve to say such things. “Back then…”I slapped Noah viciously. “Back then? How dare you mention anything from back then? Everything you have, you have because of me, Noah. My family raised you. But what did you do in return?“You used the fact that Yvonne had saved your life as an excuse to mess around with her. You even plotted to steal my inheritance from my parents after they died!”I was so angry that I shook all over. My eyes were bloodshot I clenched my fists tightly, even though all I wanted was to slap him again.Noah’s expression darkened very quickly after hearing what I said. He glared at me. He seemed to want to explain things
