Noah’s fist froze mid-air. Sweat dripped from his brow, catching the moonlight like shards of glass. His chest rose and fell hard, eyes narrowing on the shadow where Elena stood.

“What the hell are you doing here?” His voice cut through the quiet lot—low, rough, edged with something dangerous.

Elena’s mouth went dry. She stepped forward into the weak spill of the floodlight, heart slamming against her ribs. “I was… just passing by.”

He let out a short, humorless laugh. “Passing by. At one in the morning. In an empty lot behind closed shops.” He wiped his forehead with the back of his wrist, then reached down and gripped the hem of his soaked black T-shirt. In one smooth motion he peeled it off, tossing it onto the heavy bag.

Elena’s breath hitched. She couldn’t help it. His torso was carved—lean muscle shifting under bruised skin, fresh red marks blooming across his ribs, old scars crisscrossing like a map of every fight he’d refused to lose. Sweat gleamed on his abs, trailing down the sharp V that disappeared into low-slung sweats. She stared too long. Heat flooded her face.

Noah noticed. Of course he did.

He stepped closer. Slow. Deliberate. Close enough that she could feel the heat rolling off him, smell the sharp mix of sweat and pine and something metallic—blood, maybe, from split knuckles.

“You shouldn’t walk alone at night,” he said, voice quieter now, almost a growl. “Not here. Not anywhere.”

“I can handle myself,” she lied, chin lifting even as her pulse roared in her ears.

He tilted his head, studying her like she was a puzzle he didn’t want to solve. “Yeah? Like last time?”

His breath brushed her cheek—warm, ragged. So close she could count the flecks of gold in his dark eyes, see the faint scar tugging at the corner of his mouth when he spoke. For one dizzy second she thought he might close the last inch. Kiss her. Or shove her away. She wasn’t sure which she wanted more.

Then he pulled back sharply, like he’d burned himself. Jaw clenched. Eyes shuttered.

“Get out of here, princess,” he said, turning away. “Before you see something you can’t unsee.”

Before she could answer, he was moving—grabbing his shirt, disappearing around the side of the building in three long strides.

Elena stood frozen, skin buzzing where his heat had been.

She should have gone home.

Instead she followed.

She kept to the shadows, heart in her throat, trailing the faint sound of his footsteps. He moved fast, purposeful, cutting through back alleys and side streets she’d never noticed before. The neighborhood shifted—neater lawns giving way to chain-link fences, graffiti-tagged walls, the distant thump of bass leaking from somewhere underground.

He stopped at a rusted metal door set into the side of an abandoned warehouse. Looked around once—sharp, practiced—then slipped inside.

Elena hesitated. Every instinct screamed to turn back.

She pushed the door open anyway.

Inside was chaos wrapped in dim red light. A makeshift cage of chain-link and steel pipes stood in the center of the cavernous space. Folding chairs circled it in uneven rows. Maybe fifty people—mostly guys, leather jackets, tattoos, cigarette smoke curling thick in the air. Music pounded low and heavy. The smell hit her: sweat, blood, cheap beer, adrenaline.

Noah was already in the cage.

Shirtless again. Gloves taped on. Facing a bigger guy—tattooed neck, shaved head, mean grin. The crowd roared as the bell clanged.

It was brutal.

Noah moved like liquid violence—dodging, striking, taking hits that should have dropped him. A fist cracked against his cheek; blood sprayed. He didn’t flinch. Just smiled—small, feral—and answered with an uppercut that snapped the other guy’s head back. Knee to the ribs. Elbow to the temple. The bigger man staggered, then crashed to the mat.

The crowd exploded.

Noah stood over him, breathing hard, blood trickling from his lip. He didn’t celebrate. Just wiped his mouth with the back of his glove and stepped out of the cage like it was nothing.

Elena shrank back against the wall, hood up, praying he wouldn’t see her.

He did.

His eyes scanned the crowd—landed on her. Narrowed.

In three strides he was there. Hand clamped around her wrist. Not hard enough to hurt. Hard enough she couldn’t pull away.

He dragged her through a side door into a narrow hallway lit by one flickering bulb. Slammed the door behind them. Pinned her against the cold concrete wall—not touching, but close enough she felt every word.

“You don’t belong here,” he said, voice low and furious. “What part of that don’t you get?”

“I wanted to see,” she shot back, chin up. “You saved me once. I wanted to know why you live like this.”

His laugh was bitter. “You think you know me now? Because you watched me bleed for money?”

“I think you’re trying to get yourself killed,” she said quietly. “And I want to know why.”

For a flash—barely a second—something cracked in his expression. Vulnerability. Raw. Like she’d punched through armor he didn’t know he had.

Then it was gone.

He stepped back. Ran a hand through his damp hair. “Go home, Elena. Before you get hurt.”

He turned to leave.

“Wait.” She grabbed his wrist. His skin was hot, slick with sweat. “Why did you help me that first night?”

He froze. Looked down at her hand on him. Then up at her face.

“Because I couldn’t walk away,” he said, voice rough. “Even though I should have.”

Then he pulled free and disappeared down the hall.

Elena stood there, chest tight, skin burning where he’d been.

The next day at school felt surreal.

Liam found her at her locker before first bell. “Hey. You okay? You look… off.”

She forced a smile. “Late night. Homework.”

He didn’t buy it but didn’t push. Instead he leaned in, voice low. “Listen, there’s this thing tonight—small bonfire at the beach. Just a few people. You should come. Get out of your head for a bit.”

She almost said no. Then she saw Noah across the hall—hood up, knuckles still taped under his sleeves, avoiding her eyes.

“Yeah,” she told Liam. “I’ll come.”

The rest of the day blurred. Classes. Notes. Whispers.

At lunch she sat with Liam’s group again. He was easy—jokes, gentle questions, that steady warmth that made the world feel less sharp. When he reached over to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, she didn’t pull away.

Across the cafeteria, Noah watched.

Jaw tight. Eyes dark.

After school Liam walked her to the gate. “Meet me at the pier at eight? I’ll bring blankets.”

She nodded.

Then, as she turned to leave, Liam called after her. “Oh—wait. Noah’s coming too. He’s been weird lately, but he promised he’d show. You’ve met him, right?”

Elena stopped cold. “What?”

Liam laughed, easy. “Yeah. We’ve been best friends since we were kids. He’s… complicated. But he’s solid when it counts. I keep trying to drag him back to the light, you know?”

The words landed like stones.

Liam—the safe one, the kind one—was best friends with Noah. The boy who fought in cages. The boy who’d saved her. The boy who’d almost kissed her in a dark hallway and then walked away.

The pull wasn’t just tightening, it was already razor-sharp.

And Elena was standing right in the middle.

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way   The Master Schedule

The glowing screen of Elena's phone was the only light in her dark bedroom at two in the morning. Her thumb hovered over a fresh calendar app she’d downloaded under a completely blank folder icon. It felt clinical. Too organized for something so messy, but her brain was short-circuiting trying to keep the days straight. She tapped a square. Blue for Liam. Mondays and Wednesdays. It made sense because those were his heavy practice days anyway, and he was usually tired enough to just want to sit on the porch or study. Then she selected a dark, sharp purple. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Noah. Weekends? Weekends were left a blank, terrifying grey. A cautious wildcard she’d have to figure out on the fly, depending on who asked first or who looked like they needed her more. It felt dirty looking at it layout like a work roster, but the panic in her chest wouldn't let her sleep until it was done."It’s literally the only way I survive this week," Elena muttered the next morning, shoving her sh

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way    Soap Opera Solution

The house didn't feel quiet again until nearly seven, when Claire finally let Noah escape the living room. Elena stood at her bedroom window, her forehead pressed against the cool glass, watching the sharp red tail-lights of his bike disappear down the dark street. Ten minutes later, Jojo and Dusty were slipping through the back door, sneaking up the carpeted stairs like they had before. They sat in a tight circle on her mattress, the bedroom door shut completely and locked for good measure. Elena sat cross-legged in the center, her dark hair falling loose around her shoulders, her hands twisting the frayed edge of her duvet into tight knots."I'm losing my mind," Elena said, her voice dropping into a tense whisper that barely carried across the room. "Like, actually losing it. I sit with Noah in his apartment, and it's everything. It's crazy and intense and I feel completely safe, like the rest of the world just stops existing. But then I see Liam in the hallway at school, and I l

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way   Tightrope

The roar of the motorcycle engine died the second Noah cut the ignition in the driveway. Elena slid off the leather seat, her legs feeling a little heavy, her skin still humming from the heat of his apartment. She turned around to face him as he kicked the stand down. He looked up at her, his jaw relaxed, looking completely different from the intense guy who had been holding her against the mattress an hour ago.She leaned down, her fingers catching the collar of his faded jacket, pulling him into a slow, lingering kiss right there on the gravel. She didn't care if the neighbors were looking through their perfect white curtains. Then the heavy wooden front door of the house clicked open. They broke apart instantly. Elena’s heart did a violent jump into her throat as she scrambled backward, her sneakers crunching loudly on the stones. Claire was standing on the threshold, a silk scarf tied neatly around her neck, her eyes wide as she took in the scene. Elena braced herself for the

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way    Double Edges

A low, thick growl scraped right out of Noah’s chest the second the apartment door clicked shut behind them. He didn't even let her drop her bag. He just caught her by the waist and pulled her straight toward the mattress in the corner of the room, their mouths crashing together before they even hit the sheets. It was wild, thick with an urgency that felt like they’d been separated for years instead of just a few hours in a crowded hallway. Their tongues slid together in a deep, bruising rhythm that made Elena’s head spin completely out of focus, her hands instantly flying up to cup his face, her fingers digging into his jawline just to hold him still against the absolute fire of it.She shifted, her skirt gathering around her hips as she swung her leg over him, sitting astride his lap. Her dark hair fell forward, a heavy curtain on both sides of their faces, blocking out the rest of the dim room until there was nothing but his breathing and the smell of his skin. Noah’s hands we

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way   Alibis and Locker Rows

"Tell us everything. Literally every single detail, El, do not skip a single second."Jojo was practically vibrating against the row of chipped metal lockers, her fingers gripping the strap of her tote bag so hard her knuckles were white. The locker room was a chaotic mess of slamming doors, the sharp tang of body spray, and the distant echo of a coach’s whistle from the gymnasium down the hall.Elena shoved her heavy biology textbook into her locker, the thick plastic spine hitting the metal back with a loud clatter. A slow, helpless smile broke across her face before she could even try to hide it. She looked at Jojo, then over at Dusty, who was leaning against the adjacent bench with his arms crossed, his eyes wide and completely locked onto her."Okay, so," Elena started, dropping her voice to a low murmur as a couple of freshman girls walked past them toward the showers. She leaned into the narrow space of her locker, pretending to look for something in her bag. "Yesterday at lu

  • To the two boys I like: Burn me the safe way   His Touch Under the Desk

The call with Liam had been surprisingly easy. Too easy. She’d sat on the edge of her mattress last night, her throat tight, spinning a chaotic story about forgetting an essential textbook at the library and panicking because of her grades.Liam just swallowed it. He always did. “It’s fine, El, I get it. Just text me next time so I don’t think you crashed your mom’s car,” he’d said, his voice so painfully forgiving it made her stomach turn. He was trying so hard to be the perfect boyfriend, completely oblivious to the fact that the girl he was protecting didn't really exist anymore.By the next morning, the guilt was still a dull thud in her temples, but it faded the second she walked into third-period AP Biology. The room was hot, smelling of formaldehyde and floor wax. Mr. Harrison was already drawing a massive, clumsy diagram of a cellular membrane on the whiteboard, the green marker squeaking with every stroke. Elena sat near the back, her fingers mindlessly tapping against her
