Chapter 4

Author: Rainblade
The moment those words left Daniel's mouth, a commotion broke out across the entire ballroom. All my relatives turned to look at me, their whispers rising one after another.

"I can hardly recognize Liam anymore. He's been living in the big city for so long that he's even willing to disregard his roots and give up his own last name!"

"Hah! Here I thought he was actually a capable young man. Turns out he latched onto some rich woman and is living off her. How disgusting!"

One by one, my relatives hurled abuse at me as they marched out of the ballroom in fury. They made sure to pass right in front of me and give me a piece of their mind as they did.

In less than five minutes, the only people left in the ballroom were my parents. Dad strode up to me, his expression stormy, and punched me in the face.

"You ungrateful bastard! Is it so embarrassing for you to have my last name? If that's how you feel, then so be it. From this day onward, you've been disowned! Your mom and I don't need a son like you!"

After one final snort, Dad kicked open the door and stormed off. Mom was even more heartbroken, tears streaming down her face. She wouldn't even say a word to me. She merely gave me one long, sorrowful look before following Dad out of the ballroom.

As my cheek stung like mad, I lunged forward and grabbed Daniel by the collar.

"I don't give a damn whether this was your idea or Christina's. You're going to tell everyone the truth! I can give up Christina. But you don't get to humiliate me like this!"

Daniel wasn't the least bit intimidated by my anger. He shoved me away and flashed a triumphant smile.

"What truth? All your relatives saw that agreement. You wanted to marry into the Lockwood family and become their live-in son-in-law. That's the truth. Oh, right. I forgot to tell you. I livestreamed everything that just happened.

"Now it's not just your poor relatives; everyone in the entire country now knows you were trying to climb up the social ladder by marrying rich. Hahaha!"

My head throbbed violently. The veins in my arms bulged as rage surged through me. I shot forward and punched Daniel down, just as Christina arrived.

"Liam Ellison! Have I been too nice to you? How dare you attack Daniel like that!" Christina helped Daniel to his feet, then rushed over and slapped me across the face.

My eyes were bloodshot. My nails dug into my palms.

"He used your phone to send messages to my parents and everyone back in my hometown, telling them to come to our engagement party. Then he livestreamed the whole thing and publicly displayed that agreement in front of everyone, announcing that I was going to marry into your family!

"He dragged my dignity through the mud in front of everyone. Am I still even a man if I don't punch the living lights out of him?"

Christina, who had been furious moments ago, froze. She pressed her lips together, seemingly lost in thought.

But Daniel, who was now standing beside her, tugged on her sleeve and fell back on his usual pity ploy.

"Chrissy, I only wanted the whole country to witness how much Liam truly loves you. What's so wrong about that? Not only did he not appreciate my kindness, but he even beat me up! It's clear now that he never intended to marry you."

After a long silence, Christina finally snapped back to her senses, her gaze hard. "Daniel's right. If you really loved me, you wouldn't be afraid of everyone knowing you were going to marry into my family. I don't care what your excuse is. If you don't apologize to Daniel today, you can get the hell out of here and never show your face again!"

Seeing the way Christina was doing everything she could to defend Daniel, I smirked bitterly and nodded. "Sure. I'll get the hell out right away."

With that, I walked out of the hotel without looking back. A Rolls-Royce had already been waiting outside for quite some time. Without hesitation, I opened the door and got inside.

"Take me to my parents first. I'm taking them with me."

On the way, I sent Christina one final message. "There won't be a 99th proposal, Christina. Our relationship ends here. The poor boy and the wealthy heiress won't be getting their rags-to-riches romance after all."

I stood beneath the scorching sun in Anberia, watching clouds of dust billow over the gold mine in the distance.I was no longer Liam Ellison, the man who had humbled himself to the point of groveling in the dust for love. Here, I was a greatly respected technical consultant who could solve the most challenging technical problems in the world. My parents lived on a nearby estate, spending their time tending to their flowers and vegetables. They had smiled more in recent days than they had in the past nine years combined.Just then, Blake approached me with a tablet. "Mr. Ellison, there's some news from Seamarsh."On the screen was a news conference announcing Lockwood Corporation's bankruptcy and liquidation. John's hair seemed to have gone gray overnight. He looked haggard, his cheeks sunken.Another headline reported that Daniel had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for commercial fraud and embezzlement. The accompanying photo showed him in a prison uniform, being escorted aw

After a few seconds of silence, Daniel protested in an aggrieved manner, "Chrissy! How could you think that of me? I only wanted everyone to see how much Liam loves you! I… I was only doing it for your own good!"However, countless scenes flashed through Christina's mind.Every time I proposed to her, Daniel would "happen" to show up. Every gift she gave me would be "accidentally" ruined by Daniel. And every time she wanted to spend some quality time alone with me, Daniel would "coincidentally" run into trouble. In the past, Christina had thought they were all coincidences, that Daniel simply depended on her. But now, when she found the common denominator in all those coincidences, they no longer felt like coincidences to her.She realized they were calculated schemes.Christina's voice turned cold. "The Ferrari my dad gave me. You kept urging me to give it to you, didn't you? You told me it was embarrassing that Liam's a delivery guy, that he wasn't good enough for me, and that

Inside the presidential suite at the Cerulean Hotel, Christina paced back and forth across the carpeted floor in agitation."Guess I've really indulged you too much, Liam!" She hurled her phone onto the couch, her chest heaving with anger.Ever since she left the ballroom and returned to the suite, she'd been trying to get in touch with me. However, every one of the dozens of calls she made went unanswered. In the past, no matter how badly we fought or argued, whenever she called, I would come running to her like some lovesick puppy. This time, I'd not only given her attitude because of Daniel, but I'd even put on a disappearing act.The more Christina thought about it, the angrier she became. She grabbed a throw pillow and hurled it forcefully toward the door."Leave then! Go wherever the hell you want! I dare you to never come back!"She unleashed all of her anger, but instead of feeling better, she was gripped with an inexplicable sense of emptiness and unease.Christina ha

"Of course it's true!" Blake piped up.After releasing Dad, he pulled out a document and a tablet before handing them over."Mr. and Mrs. Ellison, this is your son's employment contract, along with information about the gold mine project in Anberia. He will be receiving an eight-figure annual salary, not including additional project bonuses."Your son has been hired to resolve one of the most challenging mining problems in the world. Our boss went to great lengths to convince your son to join the team before he finally agreed to it."Still skeptical, Dad checked the document. Even though he wasn't very educated, he picked out some of the key words in the contract, and he recognized the long string of zeroes in the row about my salary. Then he skimmed through the photos and blueprints of the gold mine on the tablet. The sheer scale of the project was something he had never seen in his entire life."W-What exactly is going on?" Dad's tone softened."Mom, Dad, all these years, besi

Inside the Rolls-Royce, I leaned back against the soft leather seat. Outside the window, Seamarsh's dazzling nightscape flew past in a blur. Every flash of neon light felt like a stabbing wake-up call—a reminder of what a joke my life had been for the past nine years. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Where to, Mr. Ellison?""Find my parents." I closed my eyes as exhaustion washed over me. "They should be at a hotel near Seamarsh Railway Station, getting ready to head back to our hometown."Blake Anderson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, immediately picked up a satellite phone and began issuing instructions."Check the guest records for every hotel near Seamarsh Railway Station. I want the Ellisons' exact location within 20 minutes."Once his call ended, silence filled the air once more. For nine years, I had done everything it took to fulfill every one of Christina's demands named as the prerequisite to agreeing to my proposal.I went from a br
