Chapter 4

Autor: Sable Censer
Hailey walked in and picked up the file.

I followed her out, but she immediately assumed I was trying to steal the credit. "Sadie, Vivian said I'm taking the lead on this one. You're just here to assist. So don't overstep."

The second I heard that, a weight lifted off my shoulders. I'd just been racking my brain trying to figure out how to distance myself from this deal. Now I didn't have to lift a finger.

A little while later, I casually dropped some bait around the office. "Wendy, I heard this deal is a big one. The boss is apparently paying close attention to it personally. If it goes well, interns could get brought on full-time, and senior staff could get promoted. Anything's possible."

Wendy eagerly agreed, playing right into it. Hailey, sitting across from me, didn't say a word, but I could practically see the gears turning behind her eyes.

Right before the end of the day, she came straight to me. "Sadie, I'm the lead on this project. You know that, right?"

I nodded.

"Then you don't need to be involved at all. I'll let Vivian know."

I was laughing on the inside, knowing she'd taken the bait, but I put on an irritated front. "Hailey, what's that supposed to mean? Are you messing with me? What if something goes wrong and they pin the blame on me?"

Seeing me dig my heels in, she snapped. "Then what do you want?"

I smiled. "A written statement confirming that during my remaining time at the company, I was not involved in or given access to any part of this project's bidding, pricing, or proposals. That's the only way to make sure nobody pins anything on me later."

We went back and forth for a while, but she eventually agreed. Before the end of the day, I had the document in hand. With that in my pocket, no one could come after me down the road.

Over the next few days, Hailey and the team she'd handpicked busied themselves with the deal while I quietly wrapped up everything for my departure. I also made a point of screenshotting the work group chat every single day, proving I hadn't touched anything related to the project.

Finally, my contract expired, and I walked out cleanly.

On my last day, a group of coworkers gathered around. They looked genuinely sad to see me go, insisting they'd take me out for dinner. Hailey, on the other hand, looked downright smug, convinced I'd been fired.

Just before I left, she strolled over to my desk. I didn't even have to look up to know exactly what kind of expression she was wearing.

"Sadie, so you're leaving, huh? Wait, you didn't get fired, did you? Well, if you ever need anything, feel free to reach out. Maybe I can put in a good word for you."

I didn't bother responding. I just turned around and walked out of the building.

Even though things ended on an ugly note, this place really did shape who I was. But now, it was time to move on.

The bid was only three days away, and I didn't waste a second of it resting. Every spare moment went into preparation.

This wasn't just about showing anyone up. It was about proving what I was capable of and earning myself the kind of opportunity I deserved.

The day arrived quickly. I walked into the building alongside the Yorker Corp team, and not far behind, Hailey filed in with hers.

Just before the bidding started, I felt a sudden urge to use the restroom and hurried off. Because of that, I missed the initial lineup entirely, and Vivian didn't spot me.

By the time I got back, things were just getting underway. I didn't stare openly, but I could feel Hailey panicking beside me.

Three companies were competing in total. The first wrapped up quickly, and Hailey's team was up second.

Right around then, Vivian and the boss finally showed up, fashionably late.

The moment she walked in, Vivian barked across the room. "Sadie Lawson, get up on that stage right now! What do you think you're doing standing with a competitor?"

When the trial ended, everyone around me was celebrating, thrilled that the nightmare was finally over. But I couldn't bring myself to feel the same way. It wasn't just the fallout with my family. It was the question I still had about Vivian.I wanted to ask her, but she looked so composed, as if she didn't think anything she'd done was out of the ordinary. So I let it go.Life went back to normal after that. Then one evening, on my way home, my parents and my brother ambushed me out of nowhere, demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars. When the yelling didn't work, they actually pulled out a knife and a rope, trying to drag me away by force.I called the police immediately. And this time, I pressed charges for everything I could—neglect, defamation, and unlawful restraint. They cried and screamed and cursed my name, same as always. But after everything I'd already been through, none of it touched me anymore. The charges stuck, and once they realized I wasn't someone they coul

"My contract expired. Why wouldn't I choose a better company to continue my career? I signed an employment agreement, not an oath of servitude."As for the third charge," I paused for a moment before continuing, "I'd like to present the following evidence. These documents prove that I had no involvement whatsoever during the relevant period."The first was the written statement Hailey had signed for me, complete with her signature and thumbprint. It was fully official. The second was a complete record of my chat logs from the moment the project launched, clearly showing I never came into contact with any information related to the deal.Gerald shot to his feet and pointed at me. "With your position at the company, accessing those files would've been a walk in the park!"That only gave me more to work with."I'd like to remind you that in five years of employment, I brought in over a hundred million dollars in revenue for your company. And yet my title, from start to finish, was t

Right in the middle of our conversation, the police showed up at the office after receiving a report. There was no solid evidence, but the public was already convinced I was guilty. The comment sections were out of control."The police literally went to arrest her and people still think it's fake?""Exactly. Open and shut case!""Do you know how many people's hard work goes into a single proposal? And she just leaked it?""Lock her up!"I turned off my phone and shut it all out. The truth would come to light eventually. All I could do was wait. But before the police could even start their process, my former company showed up first.Vivian looked especially pleased with herself, convinced this was the end of me. She looked me up and down, then spoke."Sadie Lawson. How the tables have turned. Didn't think I'd find something to pin on you, did you?"I always said, don't get too cocky. Pride comes before the fall."This time, there's no coming back for you."Leaking trade secr

The first thing I did after reading that headline was laugh. I thought they were content just squeezing every last drop out of me while I worked there. I never imagined they'd actually try to destroy me on my way out.Public opinion could crush a person. But I wasn't going to let this be the thing that broke me.I stuck to my usual routine, got myself ready, and headed to work. My conscience was clear. No matter how deep anyone dug, they wouldn't find a thing. And besides, Hailey had signed that written statement herself. On my way in, the family group chat exploded.I genuinely didn't expect the story to reach them. But sure enough, every aunt and uncle who never said a word on a normal day suddenly had working thumbs and strong opinions.A few of them were especially enthusiastic. My uncle's wife, Aunt Patty, chimed in first. "Sadie, this family has never had its name dragged through the mud before. If this is true, you need to sort it out and stop dragging us into it. My daug

"But out of respect for our history, I'm willing to give you one chance to make this right."I let out a cold laugh. "Vivian, are you sure it hasn't expired?"She was still so full of herself. She kept repeating it like a broken record. "You abandoned your post and violated your contract. I can sue you right now! How do you even have the nerve?"I pulled out my phone and started scrolling. "You don't believe me? Perfect. I happen to have screenshots right here. Let me do you the favor."I held the contract up in front of her face, and her eyes went wide. She grabbed the phone and read it over three or four times before handing it back.By then, the panic was written all over her. Vivian had been so shrewd for so many years, and this was the one time she'd slipped up.I continued, "I was planning to renew, you know. I'm a loyal person, and I wanted to stay. But then you had to go and create that little rule about fining people 500 dollars for every minute in the restroom. "And

I played innocent and didn't say a word.Beside me, Hailey was getting worked up, and she actually looked a little hurt. "Aunt Viv! I prepared this entire pitch myself. Sadie had nothing to do with it. You can't let her take credit for my work!"You said you'd give me a chance. I still need to get hired full-time. You promised Dad."She looked like she was about to lose it.Vivian rushed over to Hailey, barely hiding the panic on her face. I could actually see her hands trembling."What do you mean this bid is your responsibility? Do you even know your own skill level? How could you take this on?"Then she grabbed me by the arm and hissed, "Sadie Lawson, are you blind? Can you not see where your own company is? If you love the competition so much, why don't you just go work for them?"Now's not the time to deal with you. We'll settle this when we're back at the office. But right now, you get on that stage. Immediately."I waved her off with a helpless shrug. "Sorry, Vivian. You
