Sydney

The next morning was a little too uneventful for a weekend—a day without school.

The house was even quiet. No chatter from the kitchen, no Micheal, no Tyler, no Brooklyn…

Wait, no Brooklyn?

I slipped out of bed slowly, grabbing my phone as I walked out of the room, threading carefully towards her room.

I turned the handle, but it wouldn’t budge.

Every door in the house could only be locked from the outside, so that meant Brooklyn hadn’t come back home.

Great.

Hopefully, Mom wasn’t going

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 219

TylerI did not regret what I said to Sydney.I meant every word, even though I knew exactly what I was risking. Because I’d known that if I didn’t say it then, I might never find the courage to do it again. And yes, I’d expected Sydney’s response to be something along those lines. I mean, Sydney’s soft. She panicked easily, and over-thought everything. But I knew she’d meant what she’d said. And I’d be lying if I said everything that’d happen between us was easy to shove under the carpet.Because no matter how many times she tried to convince herself otherwise, I knew she’d been scared of me for a good part of the time we’d known each other.“I’m not ready.” Her voice echoed in my head as I watched her car leave the parking lot before finally climbing into the backseat of mine. The fear that’d crossed her eyes. That hesitation. It’d stung. I won’t lie about that. And even more when Ben wouldn’t stop glancing at me through the rearview mirror, as though he could see my heartbeat slow

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 218

SydneyI frowned, holding the book against my chest as I looked at her.Her smile had disappeared.“Do what?”“Dismiss this because of what happened yesterday.” “I’m not dismissing it.” I tucked my hair behind my ear. “I’m just…other things come first.”“Don’t say that.” She looked genuinely offended. “Where’s the excitement? The Winter ball is basically the highlight of every senior year!”I stared at her. “So are our tests, our biology project due Monday and oh, we have applications to submit.”“Oh my god,” Maeve groaned, rolling her eyes.I almost laughed. But then she narrowed her eyes at me. “You know what I’m talking about.”I shrugged. “Maybe.”“Come on,” she caught my hand and gave it a little shake. “This is the winter ball, Sydney. There’ll be lights and music, and…and most importantly…” Her gaze slipped past my shoulder, a tiny smile appearing on her lips. “Dates.”That made me frown. Not just because of the entire winter ball itself, or the idea of having a date, which se

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 217

SydneySomewhere in between my cheeks burning every time Maeve grinned at me when I basically said a word, and desperately trying to shove the guilt out of my head, I somehow managed to fall asleep without thinking too much about that nearly empty gym.Oh, who am I kidding?I did. Then I crawled out of bed the next morning, took a shower, pulled out the closest oversized shirt I owned, and finally stood in front of my mirror.Hair looking like I’d fought with a badger in my sleep.‘He’d literally asked you out. Whether you like it or not.’Maeve’s voice echoed in my head, followed by the sound of her loudly munching on those chips enough to make me want to end the call.Instead, I’d grown so red, at some point I’d actually considered texting Tyler.Because she’d been kind of right. And she’d also been right about how calm Tyler had been when I’d indirectly agreed that he was a lot.Stop.“Focus, Sydney.” I muttered, shaking the thought away as I picked up my hairbrush to fix the mess

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 216

Sydney “There’s a lot of eyes on him all the time.” I continued. “People at school say the shittiest things when I as little as stand beside him. They’re going to talk even more if I become his girlfriend.” “Sydney.” “They’ll have opinions about everything I do, everything he does, everything we—” “Sydney.” “What if I’m not good enough for him?!” The words came out louder than I intended. “Oh,” Maeve’s shoulders dropped. I sucked in a breath. “I’m sorry.” “No, no. It’s okay.” She said calmly, her gaze faltering for a second before a tiny smile appeared on her face. “Now I see the problem here.” “What?” “You don’t think you’re good enough to be with Tyler.” My gaze dropped. “Maybe.” A second passed. Then Maeve let out a tiny breath. “Sydney, do you think Tyler would lead you on for nothing?” She asked. “Because if you ask me, I don’t think he’d sit with you, take you out for a drive, make you his date to an event he hosted, and then confess if he didn’t th

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 215

Sydney The earth stopped spinning for a second. My lungs felt so tight I thought they might burst, and I stared at Tyler, trying to make sense of what he’d just said. But this wasn’t about extreme fear or anxiety or panic. Or even excitement. It was uncertainty. ‘Breathe, Sydney.’ I took a breath, all the emotions I’d just named somehow mixing into one for some reason as I stared back at him, his words echoing through my head for a few more seconds. Something in my mind screamed. ‘Exactly! Yes, Sydney! This is what you’ve been waiting for,’ it squealed. ‘You can finally shut down the rumors and be comfortable being seen with him in public. Sydney Walker, you are going to be Tyler Sinclair’s girlfriend!’ ‘Stop!’ I argued back, my heartbeat picking up as I blinked several times, trying to get my thoughts under control. Tyler’s brows pulled together, this worried look taking over the nervous sincerity in his eyes as he leaned slightly closer. “Sydney?” “I’m not rea

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 214

Sydney“Yeah,” he nodded, then looked down again.“But I do miss her.” He admitted. “I miss the old Brooklyn. The one before the fame. Less mean and…greedy and actually cared about the feelings of the people around her.”My stomach tightened, Brooklyn apologizing to me last night flashing through my mind. She’d sounded very remorseful and relieved when I’d told her I forgave her. But apparently, there were still a lot of people she needed to apologize to.Still, I forced a smile. “She sounds fun.”He laughed under his breath. “She was.” He looked at me again. “Do you know she used to have braces?”My eyes widened. “Really?”“Yeah,” he laughed. “It all looked like a bunch of wires had gotten stuck in her mouth, and I swear sometimes she sounded like Donald Duck when she talked.”“What?” Laughter burst out of me before I could stop it, my voice echoing through the gym before I could cover my mouth.Tyler laughed too.“No way.” I said when I caught my breath. “That’s a terrible compariso

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 1

Sydney Being Sydney Walker had never been easy. Not when I was little. Not now, as you’re reading this. At first, I was just that antisocial, nerdy girl who never put up her hand in class even when she knew an answer, who never looked anyone in the eye in the hallway, the girl who ran home the s

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 5

Tyler I didn’t even want to come in the first place. Michael’s parties were always predictable—crowded house, expensive liquor stolen from his parent’s wine cellar, music loud enough to make you go deaf. Same faces, same people in silly costumes, thirsty for some recognition. The only reas

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 4

Sydney Two days after I had ketchup stuck to my butt, the gossip grew louder. No one whispered anymore or tried to hide their mouth when they spoke, or cared if I was right there. “I still can’t believe she’s Brooklyn Prescott’s sister.” “Yeah, talk about differences. Are you sure they’re

  • Too Big to Fit.   Chapter 3

Tyler “Sydney Walker,” I’d repeated all day in my head. And the moment Brooklyn yelled my name, running toward me on the basketball court, and I found out that that curvy genius she hadn’t stopped blabbing about all week was her sister— Everything shifted. I swear I’m not a bully. I’ve neve
